Rex Ellingwood Beach Born: September 1, 1877

Died: December 7, 1949
Place: Sebring, Florida R ex Beach was well on his way to becoming a lawyer. He was born in Atwood, Michigan in 1877, went to school, studied, and set his sights on the field of law. He attended Rollins College, Chicago College of Law, and Kent College of Law. Not a bad path for a lawyer-to-be. B ut then... something happened that changed the course of his life forever. Gold was discovered in the Klondike, and Beach was clobbered with Gold Rush Fever. He left school to become part of the Gold Rush, and set out for the Klondike to strike it rich. He searched the North Country for five years, but never found the gold he was looking for. Instead, his travels stirred up his imagination, and he began to write. H e quickly became a popular author, writing tales of adventure, set in the wilds of Alaska. He wrote of huge, untamed, wild lands filled with risk and danger. He championed the courage and bravery of those who lived and died on the Alaskan frontier. His sold his stories to magazines and periodicals, and people ate up his tales. His writing spanned 40 years, and in that time he published numerous articles, short stories, and more than 30 novels. H is stories were immensely popular with a public that was fascinated with the rough-and-tough sagas of the Gold Rush, and several of his works became bestsellers in the early 1900's. His novel

Orange Blossoms The Novels of Greater Orlando Home English Major's Handbook Vitae Orlando Literature ... Orange Pulp Like our architecture, cuisine, and history, Orlando's novels are eclectic, occasionally derivative, and only sporadically appreciated. Even people who know that Jack Kerouac once lived in Orlando, Andre Norton in Winter Park, and Zora Neale Hurston in Eatonville invariably point out that only the last of these literary icons ever used Central Florida as a setting for a major work. And folks with a taste for the ironic might note that Edward Falco offered the ultimate urban insult by dedicating his fine novel about life in the cabins, stables, and bars around Orlando's Ben White Raceway to his hometown of New Paltz, N.Y.
So, where does that leave us? To gain literary respectability must we be folded into a vision of Central Florida that includes Cross Creek and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings? Or must we ride the I-4 literary corridor from Stephen Crane's "The Open Boat" in Daytona Beach and Robert Wilder's Flamingo Road in Deland to Jules Verne's From Earth to the Moon in Tampa? But what if we focus more tightly on what most of us actually think of as Greater Orlando, including Kissimmee and Eatonville, Winter Park and Oviedo, those cities and towns within a comfortable commute? How do we fare in that literary marketplace?

These angels mark the graves of the two wives of Sgt. Will Hawthorn, a WWI vet who rests between them. He married his first wife while stationed in France but she died young. His daughter by his second wife was named for his first wife and has been laid to rest beside her mother.
This cemetery is the newest cemetery in Memphis and is located on the North side of FM 1547 on the East side of Memphis, Texas. The orignial Fairview Cemetery, "The Old Fairview Cemetery" is located on the South side of the road. The cemetery is laid out in 24 sections. In alphabetical order, each section is named for a flower, from Azalea through Zinnia. Most sections consist of 44 blocks with each block containing 8 plots. The letters and numbers at the end of each entry indicate the section name, the block number, and the plot number. Most of the interments from 1990 - 1996 have not been entered. Anne is working on this and hopes to have a completed listing soon. If there are any questions or if you think there is an error please e-mail Anne Chappell . She provides the cemetery inscriptions below. She will do lookups for this cemetery and several others in Hall County. Thank you Anne for your gracious contribution to this site! BOOKS IN REVIEW Cockeyed Optimist John Hollow. Against the Night, the Stars: The Science Fiction of Arthur C. Clarke NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1983. 197pp. $14.95 According to John Hollow, 2010: Odyssey Two teaches us "what we learn from all of Clarke's novels: that the ancient legends of the race are in some sense true" (p. 178), confirming, as does Childhood's End , "our ancient view of ourselves as somehow important, as somehow capable of coming to grips with a larger part of the universe" (p. 104). Hollow's book focuses more single-mindedly than does any other sustained treatment on Clarke's fundamental optimism about the ultimate worth of the human endeavor. The results are mixed. The book's nine chapters take up an of Clarke's long fiction and about a quarter of his short fiction in roughly chronological order; however, this is no vade mecum . The frequent reorderings attempt to give each chapter its own thematic flow within the larger (bio)critical essay. The chapter entitled "Against the Night" argues that the young Clarke began his writing career largely in reaction to H.G. Wells the "despairer" (p. 6). "Time's Arrow" (chapter 2) shows Clarke's understanding that the physical and biological laws of nature dictate humanity's inevitable extinction. Nonetheless, our greatest danger lies not in change but in the changelessness of "The Lotus-Eaters" (chapter 3). If we will change, we can become a collective "Prometheus" (chapter 4) "carrying fire back to the heavens" (p. 47). Hollow very interestingly observes in his (5th) chapter called
