Biologia Centrali-Americana , a series that he helped to plan. Bates described 494 species of Neotropical scarabs in the Biologia . Bates began to work on scarabs fairly late in his career. His first "fully scarab" paper was published in 1868. In fact, only three papers (plus the Biologia volume) were devoted exclusively to scarabs. His other scarab descriptions were part of other papers in which he dealt with other families of beetles. In his introduction to the scarab volume of the Biologia , Bates stated that "the genera representing the Scarabaeoidea were placed by Linnaeus and other early systematists (apparently under a vague, but no less true, sense of their superior organization) at the head of the whole coleopterous series." Henry may have like carabids and longhorn beetles greatly, but he knew the true worth of scarabs! Reference: O'Hara, J.E. 1995. Henry Walter Bates-his life and contributions to biology. Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892)
"... on these expanded membranes [i.e., butterfly wings] Nature writes, as on a tablet, the story of the modifications of species, so truly do all changes of the organisation register themselves thereon. Moreover, the same colour-patterns of the wings generally show, with great regularity, the degrees of blood-relationship of the species. As the laws of nature must be the same for all beings, the conclusions furnished by this group of insects must be applicable to the whole world." British naturalist, primarily an entomologist, who also made large general collections of Amazonian animals during 14 years of field work. Bates, already a diehard beetle collector, became friends with Wallace while they were both living in the English countryside and then set out with him to become a professional collector in the Amazon in 1848. When Wallace returned to England and then went on to Indonesia, Bates stayed in the Amazon but continued to correspond, encouraging Wallace's developing theories on organic evolution. Bates discovered that closely related species often were separated geographically by rivers, and later realized that this was evidence of geographical speciation. His 1862 study of color patterns in butterflies established what is now called Batesian mimicry, in which non-poisonous animals mimic the bright warning colors of poisonous animals. Bates argued that this kind of mimicry could not be produced by Lamarckian use-inheritance and was clear evidence of selection. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1881.

    Voyages and Travels
Many of the works in the Tippmann Collection are European travel narratives dating from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. These works focus on the natural history and sometimes specifically on the insects of a region or country. Explorers, often accompanied by naturalists and artists, traveled to Asia, South America, and Antarctica in search of adventure. The naturalists on these voyages described and collected the flora and fauna of a region, while the artists drew specimens for future publication.
Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was a British naturalist and entomologist, who amassed large general collections of Amazonian specimens during fourteen years of field work. Accompanied by Alfred Russel Wallace, he set out to become a professional collector of specimens in the Amazon in 1848. Bates discovered that closely related species often were separated geographically by rivers, but he did not realize this was evidence of geographical speciation. Bates studied color patterns in butterflies, which defined Batesian mimicry, a natural phenomena in which nonpoisonous species mimic the bright warning colors of poisonous ones. Henry Walter Bates, 1825-1892.

    Bates, Henry Walter
English naturalist and explorer, who spent 11 years collecting animals and plants in South America and identified 8,000 new species of insects. He made a special study of camouflage in animals, and his observation of insect imitation of species that are unpleasant to predators is known as 'Batesian mimicry'.
Bates was born in Leicester and left school at 13, but studied natural history in his spare time. In 1844 he met English naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace , and together they travelled to the Amazon region of South America 1848 to study and collect its flora and fauna. Wallace returned to England 1852 but Bates remained until 1859. He returned with a vast number of specimens, including more than 14,000 species of insects.
In 1861 Bates presented a paper entitled 'Contributions to an insect fauna of the Amazon Valley', in which he outlined his observations of mimicry. He had discovered that several different species of butterflies have almost identical patterns of colours on their wings, and that some are distasteful to bird predators whereas others are not. He suggested that the latter types, influenced by natural selection, mimic the distasteful species and thus increase their chances of survival.
In The Naturalist on the River Amazon 1863, Bates described both his explorations and his scientific findings.

Dick Vane-Wright is the Keeper of the Department of Entomology, responsible for over 100 people who work there and the National Collection of more than 28 million specimens of insects and related arthropods. Campbell R. Smith is a staff entomologist carrying out research on the butterflies, in collaboration with Dick. Linnaeus, C. Systema naturae , Regnum Animale, 10th edition. 824 pp. Holmiae.
Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) was a Swedish biologist (principally a botanist) who is considered to be the father of modern taxonomy. He was the first scientist to apply a binominal system of a generic and specific name to an organism, limiting the use of that name to just one species and linking it to a description intended to be sufficient to identify it with accuracy. Zoologists date the starting point for modern nomeclature to the 10th edition of Linnaeus' Systema naturae published in 1758. All names from before that date are considered invalid and so the oldest accepted names are those employed by Linnaeus in his great work.

The following individuals scored a '20' or higher on this scale, ranked in order. Darwin, Charles [English naturalist 1809-1882]. This total clearly indicates what a tremendous debt Wallace's work owed to Darwin, whether Wallace agreed with him all the time or not.
