Sir James Matthew Barrie was a well-known author and playwright, best known for his play Peter Pan. In Sherlockian Circles, he is best know for the famous parody, The Adventure of the Two Collaborator s, a parody of Dr. Watson's Sherlock Holmes writings, which featured his friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John H. Watson and himself. This famous apocryphal work was written in 1893 on the flyleaf of a gift-book, given to Sir Arthur, in honor of their failed theatrical collaboration, Jane Annie.

og Peter Pan Forfatteren til Peter Pan J. M. Barrie blev født den 9.maj 1860 i den lille skotske by Kirriemuir. I 1885 flyttede han til London og fik stor succes som dramatiker. Han giftede sig i 1894 med skuespillerinden Mary Ansell, men snart smuldrede ægteskabet. Særligt det faktum at parret ikke var i stand til at få børn og stifte den familie, som de begge ønskede så brændende, skabte en dyb kløft imellem dem. I bryllupsgave fik de en newfoundlænderhund, som senere kom til at spille en rolle for Peter Pan bøgernes tilblivelse, (og senere som "barnepige" hos hr. og fru. Darling, Wendys forældre i Peter Pan). Barrie havde for vane at spadsere med hunden i Kensington Gardens. Her traf han en dag i 1898 den 5-årige George Davies og dennes yngre brødre Jack og Peter. Mødet blev starten på et livslangt varmt venskab med familien Davies 3, snart 5 sønner. Barrie legede ofte med drengene og fortalte historier. Inspireret af disse lege skabtes Peter Pan, der første gang optræder i 6 kapitler i Barries roman The Little White Bird, udgivet i 1902. Disse kapitler blev i 1906 samlet og udgivet som Peter Pan i Kensington Gardens. Barrie var særdeles produktiv. Barnet der aldrig ville blive voksen og moderdyrkelsen er to væsentlige temaer i hele Barries forfatterskab.
