Ray Stannard Baker and the Legacy of Progressivism In histories of Progressivism, Ray Stannard Baker (1870-1946) has been a man for all seasons: frontier democrat; spokesman for a status-anxious middle class; (Hofstadter's Age of Reform [1955]); and, most recently, representative of a generation of reformers whose European experience created a trans-Atlantic tradition of social justice and welfare (Rodgers, Atlantic Crossing [1998]) Among these and other Bakers, the Baker of my Ray Stannard Baker: The Mind and Thought of a Progressive (1966)—a study of Baker's muckraking journalism, his fictional "adventures in contentment" written under the pen name "David Grayson," and his work on Woodrow Wilson—was more in the mold of Hofstadter's post-progressivism than I then realized, specifically its themes of a conflict between "realism" (hard-hitting factuality) and "moralism" (softminded idealism) and of Baker's eventual retreat from reform. In a minor twist on Hofstadter's notion of progressive "pseudo-reform," I viewed this retreat as a debate between the journalist Baker and his literary alter-ego David Grayson, blaming "Grayson" for Baker's increasing tendency to overlook harsh realties, whether the inequities of Jim Crow (in Following the Color Line [1908]) or Wilson's sins of omission and commission (in Woodrow Wilson: Life and Letters
