Sir Francis Bacon
Biography
Bacon was born on January 22 in London, at York House off the Strand. He was the youngest of two sons of Sir Nicholas Bacon. Bacon was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, but suffered ill health and studied there for only two years. His aversion towards Aristotelian philosophy began at Cambridge. In 1576 Bacon was admitted as a senior governor at one of the four Inns of Court, which served as institutions for legal education. The same year Bacon went to France as a part of the English ambassador's suite, but was recalled when his father died suddenly. He took up his residence at Gray's Inn (one of the Inns of Court) and became a barrister in 1582. He had a succesful career but it did not satisfy his political and philosophical ambitions. He embarked on a political career that was fairly successful. He suffered a setback though due to his objections to increased subsidies to meet the expenses of the war against Spain, an opinion that upset Queen Elizabeth. In 1591 Bacon became acquainted with the earl of Essex to whom he offered the friendly advice of an older, wiser, and more subtle man. Essex recommended Bacon for several high offices, but Bacon failed to be appointed each time. The failure of an expedition by Essex and his later attempted coup d'etat, cost the head of Bacon's protector, Essex, in 1604.

Francis Bacon (1561-1626) At the same time that he was founding and promoting this new project for the advancement of learning, Bacon was also moving up the ladder of state service. His career aspirations had been largely disappointed under Elizabeth I, but with the ascension of James his political fortunes rose. Knighted in 1603, he was then steadily promoted to a series of offices, including Solicitor General (1607), Attorney General (1613), and eventually Lord Chancellor (1618). While serving as Chancellor, he was indicted on charges of bribery and forced to leave public office. He then retired to his estate where he devoted himself full time to his continuing literary, scientific, and philosophic work. He died in 1626, leaving behind a cultural legacy that, for better or worse, includes most of the foundation for the triumph of technology and for the modern world as we currently know it.

Life and Political Career Sir Francis Bacon (later Lord Verulam, the Viscount St. Albans, and Lord Chancellor of England) was born in London in 1561 to a prominent and well-connected family. His parents were Sir Nicholas Bacon, the Lord Keeper of the Seal, and Lady Anne Cooke, daughter of Sir Anthony Cooke, a knight and one-time tutor to the royal family. Lady Anne was a learned woman in her own right, having acquired Greek and Latin as well as Italian and French. She was a sister-in-law both to Sir Thomas Hoby, the esteemed English translator of Castiglione, and to Sir William Cecil (later Lord Burghley), Lord Treasurer, chief counselor to Elizabeth I, and from 1572-1598 the most powerful man in England.

English philosopher, and later Lord Chancellor of England, who was displeased with the state of natural philosophy. He felt that knowledge is not abstract reason, but the application of facts. This drive towards applications was novel in physics. Like Descartes , Bacon was skeptical of both reason and observation. He grouped the ways in which human reason could be deceived into Idylls of the Cave (a person's views are influenced by those around him), Idylls of the Marketplace (erroneous arguments can appear convincing), and Idylls of the Theater (theories about the world can be erroneous). Bacon believed that the senses can't be trusted, but neither can reason be relied upon. He maintained that nature could only be understood using instruments to actively "torture" it (vita activa) and reveal its secrets. He believed that understanding could not start from first principles (which only lead further astray), but must be obtained by performing a series of experiments and making generalizations by induction. Introduction:- Bacon's real claim to fame is: not that he, as the lord chancellor, in 1621, was removed from office for accepting a litigant's bribe; nor, that he was the real writer of the Shakespearean plays (one of the controversies in English literature, the "Baconian controversy") ; but rather Francis Bacon is known as a philosopher, one of the first order. Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive method, which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science, even though philosophers and scientists of the day, - and seemingly today, yet - repudiated both his theories and methodology, alike. Bacon argued that the only knowledge of importance to man was empirically rooted in the natural world; and that a clear system of scientific inquiry would assure man's mastery over the world. He was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power." He was quite taken up by the "materialist" theories and the resultant discoveries of both Copernicus and Galileo . Bacon, along with Galileo are known in the literature as "the great anti-Aristotelians who created the 'modern scientific' view of Nature."

English philosopher and statesman. Francis Bacon started out his professional life as a lawyer, and his philosophy of law was one of absolute duty to the Sovereign, but he is most well known as an advocate and defender of the scientific revolution. His philosophical works lay out a complex methodology for scientific inquiry which is often called the Baconian method.
    Life.
He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1573-75, and in 1576 was admitted to Gray's Inn. He entered parliament in 1584, became one of the leading lawyers of England, and rose through various posts in the public service until he reached the Lord Chancellorship in 1618. The same year he was raised to the peerage as Baron Verulam, and three years later was made Viscount St. Albans. In 1621 he was charged with accepting bribes, and was tried and found guilty; his offices were taken from him, he was sentenced to a fine of £40,000, to imprisonment during the king's pleasure, and was disabled from sitting in parliament and coming within twelve miles of the court. Feeling his disgrace keenly, he went into retirement and devoted the remainder of his life to study and literary work. The parliamentary sentence, however, was not imposed, for the king (James I) practically remitted his fine and in 1622 he was allowed to come to London.

    http://histoirechimie.free.fr/Lien/BACONF.htm

Bacon, Francis, 1561-1626 Instauratio Magna, but completed only two parts, The Advancement of Learning (1605), later expanded in Latin as De Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), and the Novum Organum (1620). Bacon's contribution to philosophy was his application of the inductive method of modern science. He urged full investigation in all cases, avoiding theories based on insufficient data. He has been widely censured for being too mechanical, failing to carry his investigations to their logical ends, and not staying abreast of the scientific knowledge of his own day. In the 19th cent., Macaulay initiated a movement to restore Bacon's prestige as a scientist. Today his contributions are regarded with considerable respect. In The New Atlantis (1627) he describes a scientific utopia that found partial realization with the organization of the Royal Society in 1660. His Essays (1597-1625), largely aphoristic, are his best-known writings. They are noted for their style and for their striking observations about life.
