Astor, John Jacob, 1763-1848 1763-1848, American merchant, b. Walldorf, near Heidelberg, Germany. At the age of 16 he went to England, and five years later, in 1784, he arrived in Baltimore, penniless. He later went to New York City, where in a few years he entered into business with a small shop for trade in musical instruments and furs. Shrewdness, driving ambition, and stolid concentration brought him to a commanding position in the burgeoning economy of the United States. He became a leader of the China trade and was an astute investor in lands, principally in and around New York City, but he is perhaps best remembered as a fur trader. He chartered the American Fur Company Astoria , Oregon) and the South West Company (operating around the Great Lakes). His firm exercised a virtual monopoly of the trade in U.S. territories in the 1820s and still did when he retired from it in 1834. The wealthiest man in the United States at his death, he left a fortune that has continued to make the family name prominent. Part of his money went to found the Astor Library (see New York Public Library ). His Astor House was a forerunner of family hotel properties that much later included the Astor Hotel and the Waldorf-Astoria.

    Astor, John Jacob
"The man who makes it the habit of his life to go to bed at nine o'clock, usually gets rich and is always reliable. Of course, going to bed does not make him richI merely mean that such a man will in all probability be up early in the morning and do a big day's work, so his weary bones put him to bed early. Rogues do their work at night. Honest men work by day. It's all a matter of habit, and good habits in America make any man rich. Wealth is a result of habit." JOHN JACOB ASTOR In 1790, John Jacob Astor married Sarah Todd, whose mother was a Brevoort. Sarah Todd met Astor when she came to buy furs to make herself a coat. Her ability to judge furs and make them up won the heart of the dealer. The marriage brought young Astor into "the best Dutch New York society." This marriage was a business partnership as well as marital and proved a success in every way. His AMERICAN FUR COMPANY (1808) created the first American monopoly on the fur trade in U.S. territories. The Lewis and Clark Expeditions had opened his eyes to new opportunities in the Northwest Territories. He sent out two expeditions of his own, to establish a fur trading post at Fort Astor, which eventually became the city Astoria, Oregon. " You should buy Manhatten, they aren't making anymore of it."

    http://search.eb.com/titanic/astor.html
Astor Family wealthy American family whose fortune, rooted in the fur trade, came to be centred on real estate investments in New York City. John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) was the founder of the family fortune. His son, William Backhouse Astor (1792-1875), who inherited the major portion of the estate, continued his father's program of investing in Manhattan real estate, and greatly expanded the Astor Library. Stung by accusations that he was a slum landlord, he attempted to renovate some of the older tenements owned by the Astors. At the same time, he more than doubled the family fortune, leaving an estate valued at nearly $50,000,000. John Jacob Astor (1822-90), son of William Backhouse Astor, increased the fortune to between $75,000,000 and $100,000,000. But he was a more active philanthropist than his predecessors, making substantial gifts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Trinity Church as well as to the Astor Library. His son, William Waldorf Astor (1848-1919), was politically ambitious, but after a stint in the New York state legislature and three years as U.S. minister to Italy, he moved permanently to England in 1890. He became a British subject in 1899 and, in 1917, became 1st Viscount Astor, of Hever Castle. He used much of his wealthaside from that spent building the Waldorf section of what eventually became the Waldorf-Astoria Hotelrestoring Hever Castle and funding conservative political causes in England.

    The Germans in America: Chronology
Several Germans were among the settlers at Jamestown.
Peter Minuit, a German, came to New Amsterdam to serve as the governor of the Dutch colony, New Netherlands. Later he governed the Swedish colony in Delaware.
Thirteen families of German Mennonites seeking religious freedom arrived in Pennsylvania; led by Franz Pastorius, they purchased 43,000 acres of land and founded Germantown, six miles north of Philadelphia.
The settling of the British colonies by small German-speaking religious groups continued. The groups included Swiss Mennonites, Baptist Dunkers, Schwenkfelders, Moravians, Amish , and Waldensians; most German immigrants belonged to the main Lutheran and Reformed churches. The central colonies received the greatest part of this immigration, especially Pennsylvania . As many as half of these immigrants came as redemptioners, that is, they agreed to work in America for four to seven years in exchange for free passage across the Atlantic. German settlers designed and built the Conestoga wagon , which was used in the opening of the American Frontier.
