Raphael painted him in the Parnessus fresco of the Vatican with Homer, Virgil, Horace, Ovid, Dante and Petrach. His family can be traced back to twelfth-century minor nobility, first in Bologna and then in the Duchy of Ferrara Orlando innamorato , written in the vernacular. When Ariosto's father died in 1500, Ariosto became the head of a large family and helped provide for them. He was able to continue his writing. Then in1502, with no military training, he became the commander of the fort at Canossa. He also wrote his Epithalamium for the marriage of Alfonso d'Este and Lucrezia Borgia , and was listed among the chief Italian poets of the day. In 1503, he gave up his military post and returned to Ferrara to enter the service of

Family Charles Brasch went up to Oxford in 1927 and de Beer became his unofficial tutor. He wished to understand fully all that interested him, and a great many things interested him, quite outside those belonging to his chosen field. I was surprised once at his knowledge of the details of cutting and sewing a suit of clothes; he seemed thoroughly conversant with any matter that had to do with the arts and history and literature. Milton concluded his six years of quiet study with a remarkable eighteen-month tour to various centers of European antiquity and intellectual life, notably Italy. Early in his tour, in Paris in April 1638, he was able to meet one of his great intellectual heroes, the Dutch legal theorist Hugo Grotius, exiled from Holland but then serving as the Swedish ambassador to France. Among Grotius's Latin writings were two significant for Milton's own later poetry, the drama Adamus Exsul (1601) and the poem Christus patiens (published 1619). (The library's earliest edition of Milton's third great neo-Latin poetic influence, with Buchanan and Grotius, Marco Girolamo Vida's Christiad , first published in 1535, dates only from 1731, and was not included in this exhibit.)

Italian poet, remembered primarily for his ORLANDO FURIOSO, published in its final version in 1532. Ariosto's work was the most celebrated narrative poem of the Italian high Renaissance, and the first example of modern poetry to provoke widespread critical controversy. Ariosto was born in Reggio Emilia, as the son of Count Niccolò Ariosto. At the age of then his family moved to Ferrera, where he studied law from 1489 to1494. There he also started to study Latin and Greek language and literature. When his father died in 1500, Ariosto assumed for some years the management of family estates as the eldest of 10 children. In 1502 he became commander of the fort of Canossa, and the next year he entered the service of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este. In 1513 Ariosto met Alessandra Benucci. After the death of her husband, Tito Strozzi, she became Ariosto's mistress. Because the family had settled comfortably in Ferrara, Ariosto refused to accompany Cardinal d'Este to Hungary, and entered the service of Alfonso I, Duke of Ferrara, the Cardinal's brother. In 1522 he was sent to govern the Garfagnana region in the wildest part of the Apuan Alps. He returned after three years from the bandit-ridden post to Ferrara.
