Hardy Boys History Authors Franklin W. Dixon Edward Stratemeyer ... Title Check List Created in 1926 by Edward Stratemeyer , who also created Nancy Drew Tom Swift , the Rover Boys and dozens of other memorable characters, the Hardy Boys remain popular today with close to 400 titles published in several different series. Their adventures continue in a series of paperback books The Hardy Boys aka the Digests original unrevised stories reprinted by Applewood Books. In addition to their solo adventures in the original stories and the Digests , they have joined forces with Nancy Drew in the Supermystery series, the two volume Super Sleuths series and the Be A Detective series and with Tom Swift in the short-lived Ultra Thriller series. They also spawned two spin-off series ( Casefiles and The Clues Brothers) , in addition to many other books such as The Detective Handbook, Ghost Stories , etc. The Hardy Boys have become pop culture icons and have spawned 4 TV series (including an animated cartoon series) in addition to many other media Starting in 1959, the first 38 stories were revised and somewhat abridged, much to the dismay of long-time Hardy Boys fans. The books were shortened, obsolete prose was updated and racial stereotypes were eliminated. Although the stories were given the same titles and some of the plots remained basically the same, many books were given new plots and are unrecogizable from the originals. Unfortunately, the quality of the writing was nowhere near as high as in the unrevised versions and the resulting stories lost much of their original charm.

Tom Swift
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Tom Swift is the protagonist in a series of children's adventure novels from the early twentieth century. The stories featured technology (especially transport technology) as the real star. The books were written quickly under the pseudonym Victor Appleton , who was really Howard Garis for most of the novels, and W. Bert Foster John Duffield , and Thomas M. Mitchell for some others. The pseudonym was created by Edward Stratemeyer as part of his Stratemeyer Syndicate Another 33 books were written in the Tom Swift, Jr. series. A Tom Swifty is a type of pun. However, this sentence structure is not actually used in the text of the series volumes.

The History of Tom Swifties
by Mark Israel
Not many dictionaries define "Tom Swifty". One that does is The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, 1st edition (1966): Tom Swiftie, a play on words that follows an unvarying pattern and relies for its humor on a punning relationship between the way an adverb describes a speaker and at the same time refers significantly to the import of the speaker's statement, as in "I know who turned off the lights," Tom hinted darkly. [named after a narrative mannerism characteristic of the Tom Swift American series of adventure novels for boys] In actual use, "Tom Swifty" seems to have a somewhat broader meaning, and includes the form christened "croakers" by Roy Bongartz, wherein a verb rather than an adverb supplies the pun (e.g. "I'm dying", he croaked). "Who is this Tom Swifty character anyway?" asked Tom unselfconsciously. The "narrative mannerism" that the Random House Dictionary mentions was not the Tom Swifty as such, but merely the laboured avoidance of the unadorned use of the word "said". Tom never merely "said" anything; he asserted, asseverated, averred, chuckled, declared, ejaculated, expostulated, grinned (plainly or mischievously), groaned, quipped, or smiled. In particular, sentences of the form: "-", Tom said -ly. were used ad nauseam. Then one day someone decided to satirize the mannerism by using puns, and the Tom Swifty was born.

'Radio Boys' series by 'Allen Chapman' and Others
by James D. Keeline
"Allen Chapman" was a pseudonym of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a "book packager," to use a modern phrase, which was responsible for many popular juvenile series books published between 1905 and 1986, including the Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift, Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew books, among thers. The Syndicate produced some 1,600 volumes which were written from outlines by hired "ghostwriters" for a flat fee (ie no royalties). Over the 75+ years of their operation, the Syndicate hired about 100 different ghostwriters for their series. Some writers completed only a short story or a partial manuscript while some others wrote more than 100 volumes. In one case, Howard R. Garis, wrote more than 315 books for the Syndicate. The "Allen Chapman" name was used on several Syndicate series and many writers worked on books published under that name. One story may have been written by the founder of the Syndicate, Edward Stratemeyer (1862- 1930), but the others were by hired writers. For example, the Chapman name was used on the Ralph of the Railroad series and five different writers were involved in the ten volumes in the series. The first five were written by Weldon James Cobb (1849-1922), the Syndicate's first ghostwriter, followed by two books by Walter Bertram Foster (1869-1929), one book by John William Duffield (1859-1946), one by Roger Carroll Garis (1901-1967), and one by John Franklin Carter (1881-?).

Introduction
In the first place, there never was a "Laura Lee Hope." The Bobbsey Twins were created in 1904 by Edward Stratemeyer. One of dozens of juvenile series that Stratemeyer created and managed, the Bobbseys, along with Nancy Drew The Hardy Boys , and Tom Swift are among the best known of childrens' book characters. Using the pseudonym "Laura Lee Hope," Legend says that Stratemeyer wrote the first three books himself, then hired ghost writers to write the remaining books, often from outlines he prepared. Newer information tells us that he probably only wrote the first book. Careful reading of the first three will suggest that, as the style in the first book is quite different from the others. (For more details on who really wrote each of the 72 books, see James Keeline's article on the subject .) On Stratemeyer's death in 1930, his daughter Harriet Stratemeyer Adams took over the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The first series of books written/produced by Stratemeyer was The Rover Boys , written under the pseudonym of Arthur M. Winfield. There were 30 volumes, written between 1899 and 1926.
