Modern American, 1914-present: Literature
Sherwood Anderson, 1876-1941
"Those who are to follow the arts should have a training in what is called poverty. Given a comfortable middle-class start in life, the artist is almost sure to end up being a belly-acher, constantly complaining because the public does not rush forward at once to proclaim him." excerpt from Sherwood Anderson's autobiography: A Story Teller's Story
by Susan Severson, student, University of North Carolina at Pembroke
Sherwood Anderson is perhaps best known as a writer of short stories. However, as David D. Anderson states in the Dictionary of Literary Biography , “In form, Winesburg, Ohio is perhaps most accurately called a short story sequence, a form developed by Anderson in this and later collections [ The Triumph of the Egg ] but Anderson later referred to the collection as a novel in a form invented by himself; although he called each of the individual sections a short story” (11). In the same article, Sherwood Anderson himself is quoted, “What I wanted is a new looseness and in Winesburg I have made my own form. There were individual tales but all about lives in some way connected” (11). The collection of short stories is reminiscent of another work, as Frank Magill states in

Sherwood Anderson, A Brief Biography
One day in Sherwood Anderson's life, Nov. 28, 1912, has assumed mythic proportions in the story of American literature. This was the day he "left business for literature," simply walking out of his office as president of the Anderson Manufacturing Co. (Home of "Roof-Fix Cure for Roof Troubles") in Elyria, Ohio, not only giving up a dream of becoming rich in American business, but also abandoning his responsibilities as a middle-class citizen, including a wife and three small children. Although this account oversimplifies a process that took several messy, frequently unhappy years, it is nevertheless true in spirit, making Anderson the best-known archetype of the gifted American caught between the pull of riches, success, respectability, and family responsibility on the one hand and the call of creativity, probably to be accompanied only by penury and disappointment, on the other. Anderson was born into a poor family in Camden, Ohio, on Sept. 13, 1876, but spent his formative years in the town of

The Egg
By Sherwood Anderson
From Sherwood Anderson's second short story collection, The Triumph of the Egg (New York: Huebsch, 1921), pp 46-63; originally, "The Triumph of the Egg," in Dial, number 68, March, 1920. [Project Gutenberg has Winesburg, Ohio in wnbrg11.txt.] MY FATHER was, I am sure, intended by nature to be a cheerful, kindly man. Until he was thirty-four years old he worked as a farmhand for a man named Thomas Butterworth whose place lay near the town of Bidwell, Ohio. He had then a horse of his own and on Saturday evenings drove into town to spend a few hours in social intercourse with other farmhands. In town he drank several glasses of beer and stood about in Ben Head's salooncrowded on Saturday evenings with visiting farmhands. Songs were sung and glasses thumped on the bar. At ten o'clock father drove home along a lonely country road, made his horse comfortable for the night and himself went to bed, quite happy in his position in life. He had at that time no notion of trying to rise in the world. It was in the spring of his thirty-fifth year that father married my mother, then a country schoolteacher, and in the following spring I came wriggling and crying into the world. Something happened to the two people. They became ambitious. The American passion for getting up in the world took possession of them.

Anderson, Sherwood 1876-1941, American novelist and short-story writer, b. Camden, Ohio. After serving briefly in the Spanish-American War, he became a successful advertising man and later a manager of a paint factory in Elyria, Ohio. Dissatisfied with his life, however, Anderson abandoned both his job and his family and went to Chicago to become a writer. His first novel, Windy McPherson's Son (1916), concerning a boy's life in Iowa, was followed by Marching Men (1917), a chronicle about the plight of the working man in an industrial society. In his best-known work, Winesburg, Ohio Poor White Many Marriages (1923), and Dark Laughter The Triumph of the Egg Horses and Men (1923), and Death in the Woods (1933) contain some of his most compassionate and penetrating writing. In 1927, Anderson moved to Marion, Va., where he bought and edited two newspapers, one Republican and one Democratic. See his autobiographical Story Teller's Story (1924) and Tar: A Midwest Childhood (1926); memoirs (1942); letters (ed. by H. M. Jones and W. B. Rideout, 1953); diaries (ed. by Hilbert H. Campbell, 1987); biographies by Irving Howe (1966) and Kim Townsend (1987); studies by P. P. Appel, ed. (1970) and Welford D. Taylor, ed. (1977).

Statement of Programs and Library Needs: Special Collections collects the literature of the Appalachian Region as comprehensively as possible. The majority of the works collected are printed works, although efforts have also been made to acquire manuscript materials. See, for example, the thorough collection of printed publications of Sherwood Anderson Collection . However, there are relatively few manuscripts available for comprehensive-level research in Anderson studies. In addition, the department has a good representative collection of 18th-century British literature, which emphasized major writers and genres. Also represented in the collection is a growing collection of 19th-century American literature in which minor writers are emphasized, as well as Southern writers, genres, and topical literature (e.g. Civil War poetry). The majority of the materials represented and actively collected are printed. The department has endeavored to collect representative pieces from literary genres, such as speculative fiction, and topics from all of Western European literature expensive materials are not purchased in this area. Up until very recently, the department purchased first editions and especially printed editions of contemporary American and British writers. Because of increasingly higher prices for this material, the department no longer makes significant purchases in this area.
