HANS CHRISTIAN
ANDERSEN
Hans Christian Andersen is one of the world's best known and most translated authors. The Danish writer is especially famous for his many lovely tales and fairy tales like 'The Ugly Duckling' and 'The Little Mermaid.' Andersen considered his own life beautiful and exciting as it was as a sort of fairy tale. With his unique abilities and great talent he carved out a most unusual and exciting career for himself, starting out as a poor cobbler's son and ending up as a respected international author who became a European celebrity, courted by princes and kings. His literary work is extremely comprehensive: 175 tales and fairy tales, 800 poems, 6 novels, autobiographies, innumerable travel descriptions, and works for the theatre. This Odense City Museum's traveling exhibition presents 20 printed panels illustrating the life, career and art of Hans Christian Andersen by means of text and colorful images. The display follows the writer from his birth in Odense in 1805 through his life in Denmark and Europe to his death in Copenhagen in 1875. The back side of the printed panels contain reproductions of his paper cuts, which he created throughout his life. A multimedia package is included with the Exhibit. It is available on reserve in the Media Materials Services unit of the Holland/New Library (adjacent to the exhibit itself). The multimedia package has special sections for children, as well as recordings of actors reading well-known Andersen fairy tales, songs from the Danny Kaye movie about Andersen's life, and much more.

"Once upon a time" would be an appropriate beginning for the story of Hans Christian Andersen. Young and old have read the stories of the writer who died at Copenhagen on August 1875.
Andersen was born in 1805. In his youth he suffered from poverty. At the age of 14 he left his city of birth Odense for the big city of Copenhagen. Jonas Colin, director of the Royal Theater, raised the money for his education.
He tried his hand at acting, singing and dancing but without success. Neither were his early dramas produced on stage.
Andersen's first success came with "A Walk from Holmen's Canal" in 1829. His first selection of stories, published in 1835 ("The Improviser"), was well received by critics. His first book of tales was published the same year. From then on he wrote 168 children's stories. Andersen also composed diaries of his many journeys through Europe, Asia and Africa, but his fame came from his fairy tales for children. Andersen's tales have been translated into more than 80 languages since. Most children are familiar with one or more of his stories: "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid" or "The Red Shoes".

It has become easier to search the timetable , especially when searching in results. Words found in results are being marked up in a better way, and it is now possible to truncate and mask what you search for.
The timetable is a translation of the book H.C. Andersens liv. Dag for dag ("The Life of Hans Christian Andersen. Day By Day", 310 pages with registers, Copenhagen 1998), which is a revised and extended edition of ("Hans Christian Andersen - Life and Works. A Timetable 1805-1875", Copenhagen 1993). The books have not been published in print in english and are only available in english on this homepage. The timetable is structured cronologically and is focused on the facts . The intention of this focus is to create a good reference book and avoid story-telling. A story-telling biography follows certain tracks and often leaves out information in order to tell the story as entertaining as possible. The reason for going into detail with the life of Hans Christian Andersen to this extent is partly our audience - we are beeing asked quite a few questions and often use the timetable ourselves when finding answers - partly to enlighten the relationship between the man and the writer Andersen, which is more intimate and of greater relevance than it is the case with maybe any other writer.

Classic Literature Writer Writer: Hans Christian Andersen Dates: 1805-1875 H ans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father was a cobbler (shoemaker) and his mother worked as a washerwoman. His mother was also uneducated and superstitious. Anderson receieved very little education, but his fascination with fairy tales inspired him to compose his own stories and arrange puppet shows, on a theater hsi father had taught him to build and manage. Even with his imagination, and the stories his father told him, Andersen did not have a happy childhood. His father died when Andersen was 11 (in 1816). Anderson was forced to go to work, first as an apprentice to a weaver and tailor and then in a tobacco factory. At the age of 14, he moved to Copenhagen to try a career as a singer, dancer and actor. Even with the support of benefactors, the next three years were difficult. He sang in the boy's choir until his voice changed, but he made very little money. He also tried the ballet, but his awkwardness made such a career impossible.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
Danish author (1805-1875)
Biography:
Hans Christian Andersen was born on April 1805 in Odense, Denmark. After his father's death in 1816 and her mother's remarriage, he left all alone to Copenhage to try his luck. But that was a failure. In 1822, thanks to the interest of a theatre manager called Jonas Collin, he got a scholarship which allows him to study. He began to publish in 1830. He visited France and Italy. In 1835 he published Fairy Tales, Told for Children , a successful compilation of tales which included Little Match Seller The Tinder Box Little Tiny or thumbeling The Little Mermaid The Princess and the Pea The Emperor's New Suit The Brave Tin Soldier The Snow Queen The Swineheard and The Ugly Duckling , among others.
Andersen also wrote travelogues ( Shadow Pictures from a Journey to the Harz Mountains and Saxon Switzerland , 1831), plays ( Love in Saint Nicholas Curch Tower , 1829)), poems ( Fantasies and Sketches , 1831) and novels ( The Improvisatore , 1835 and The Two Baronesses
Andersen and his tales:
Andersen's basic work, which gave him worlwide recognition, are his tales. He found his sources of inspiration in popular tales, taking his characters and plots from legends, history or everyday life. He wrote 164 tales meant not only for children but also for adults, because of their poetic imagination and the morals hiden in every tale. The "official" Andersen illustrators were two Danish artists chosen by him to illustrate the collected Danish editions of his stories. They were Lieutenant Wilhelm Pedersen (1820-1859) and Lorenz Frolich (1820-1908).
