Ontario.
American Tract Society, founded in New York City, 1825, a merger of some fifty local and sectarian societies, interdenominational and international in its work, for the purpose of publishing and circulating "whatever would best diffuse a knowledge of Christ as the Redeemer and promote the interests of true religion and sound morality." In 1841 it inaugurated a missionary colportage program. By the 1950s its emphasis has emphasized reaching foreign language groups among American immigrants. Its publications were once widely used in Mennonite Sunday schools in America, and found their way into many Mennonite homes in the United States and Canada, especially before the inauguration of denominational publishing programs. The Society remains active. It depends for support upon voluntary contributions from individuals and churches. Salvation Message Delivered With Photo of Saddam Contact: Mark A. Brown
(972) 276-9408 Ext. 118 (GARLAND, Tex.)As President George W. Bush’s State of the Union words on war reverberate across an anxious world, the four-color press in the print room of the American Tract Society headquarters cranks out in rapid-fire text a battle plan for a more basic and timeless "War with Evil." The face of Saddam Hussein glares from the tract cover. A photo of President Bush graces an inside panel.
Quoting the words of President Bush’s Tuesday address and pulling from the scripturesthe American Tract Society rallies a volume release of a quick response program gospel tract addressing the inherent evil in every person. "You don’t need to be a tyrant to be a sinner," the tract reads. The text presents the only answer to evil thoughts and actions of every degree as Jesus Christ.
"As the nation and the world brace for possible war, ATS arms the Christian civilian soldiers with a tract that targets the soul and salvation of persons of all races, religions and national origins," said Mark A. Brown, ATS Marketing Director.

Donates Quick Response Tract on the Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster CONTACT: Mark Brown
972-276-9408 Ext 118 The American Tract Society is delivering to ministry teams and churches in the Columbia debris recovery areas later this week a quick response gospel tract on the Columbia space shuttle disaster messaging scripture, prayer and salvation.
The memorial tract, "Lost: Space Shuttle Columbia" features a photo of the Columbia space shuttle crew and honors their memory with a list of brief biographies.
To the thousands of volunteers providing hot meals and bottled water to the tens of thousands of local, state and national teams manning the five-state area, ATS hopes to add a dimension of comfort, faith and Christian perspective to the sustenance fueling the recovery efforts, according to Mark A. Brown, ATS Marketing Director.
Brown said, "The ATS tract is designed to honor the space shuttle crew and provide comfort and answers to those grieving these lost heroes, and all who still feel the sting of loss from 9-11."

Manhattan Brooklyn ... Printer-safe version AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY BUILDING, 150 Nassau Street (a.k.a. 144-152 Nassau Street and 2-6 Spruce Street), Manhattan. Built 1894-95; Robert Henderson Robertson, architect; William W. Crehore, engineering consultant; John Downey, Atlas Iron Construction Co., and Louis Weber Building Co., builders. Landmarks Preservation Commission. Designated June 15, 1999; LP-2038 Summary The American Tract Society, founded in 1825 to publish and distribute religious tracts and literature, built on this site that same year. It emerged as one of the largest American publishers prior to the Civil War. The vicinity of Park Row and Nassau Street, center of newspaper publishing in New York City from the 1830s through the 1920s, was redeveloped, beginning in the 1870s, with a series of important tall office buildings. The American Tract Society Building, planned as a speculative venture when the Society was experiencing financial decline, was intended to provide it with a large rental income to continue its missions. The Society moved out, however, in 1914 and lost its building through foreclosure. The lower portion was leased to the publishers of the New York Sun from 1914 to 1919.

About the Collections
Tracts
Tracts are usually small, pamphlet-type publications produced by an organization in order to disseminate information about that organization's interests, doctrines, or creeds. This collection consists of numbered tracts produced by a variety of tract societies such as the New England Tract Society, the Protestant Episcopal Tract Society, the American Reform Tract and Book Society, The Worcester Temperance League, the American Woman Suffrage Association, the American Peace Society and the Universalist Tract Society. Many of the organizations were national in scope, and some were very local, such as the Universalist Tract Society. Topics of the tracts varied, and included writings on religion, temperance, spiritualism, peace, women's suffrage, slavery, missions and conduct of life, among others. The collection contains over 2,200 numbered tracts published in the United States between 1810 and 1883. For the most part, all numbered tracts published by a particular tract society or organization have been fully cataloged online. Exceptions to this include "adult" tracts published by the American Tract Society, the American Sunday School Union, and the American Unitarian Association which date after 1840, as well as tracts for children which were produced by any organization or tract society. The latter have been fully cataloged online in the American Childrens' Book collection. Unnumbered tracts for adults that date through 1840 may be found in many other cataloged collections, including Dated Pamphlets, Dated Books, Pamphlets and the National and Local Institutions collections.

by S.J. Wolfe, cataloguer, American Antiquarian Society
The New England Religious Tract Society (also known as the New England Tract Society) was organized May 23, 1814 and incorporated in June 1816. The name was changed by an act of the Massachusetts legislature in June 1823 to "American Tract Society." In 1825 the Boston-based American Tract Society merged with the New-York Religious Tract Society to form a new organization, which called itself The American Tract Society. The American Tract Society (Boston, Mass.) became the New England Branch of the New York American Tract Society, while maintaining its autonomy. In 1859 a major break occurred between the two American Tract Societies, due to a difference of opinion over the issue of whether or not to publish tracts which concerned "the sin of slavery." The American Tract Society (Boston, Mass.) continued to publish and distribute tracts under the name "American Tract Society." The New York-based American Tract Society promptly (1859) opened a New England Branch in Boston; they also operated major branches in Rochester, N.Y.; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Chicago, Ill., and secondary New York city branch. (It would be impossible to list all of the cities which contained ATS branches-some cities contained more than one). The American Tract Society (Boston, Mass.) maintained major branches in New York City and in Chicago, Ill. as well as in other cities across the United States.
