Where'd you get your money?" asked the man, who was a porter in the employ of a firm doing business on Spruce Street. "Made it by shines, in course. My guardian don't allow me no money for theatres, so I have to earn it." "Some boys get it easier than that," said the porter significantly. "You don't catch me stealin', if that's what you mean," said Dick. "Don't you ever steal, then?" "No, and I wouldn't. Lots of boys does it, but I wouldn't." "Well, I'm glad to hear you say that. I believe there's some good in you, Dick, after all." "Oh, I'm a rough customer!" said Dick. "But I wouldn't steal. It's mean." Mark Twain parodied him. Mencken no doubt relegated him to the realm of conventional uplift and boosterism.

This CD contains 10 of Horatio Alger's finest stories with illustrated covers from the original printings. The work was assembled by Dr. William Russo whose expertise in the field goes unchallenged. Horatio Alger has sold more books than any other American writers. Estimates are that his 119 novels and biographies total nearly 400 million printed copies. And, yet, several generations of admirers have never learned who and what Alger truly was. Touted as the man who gave boys the moral blueprint to achieve financial and personal success, Alger was an unobtrusive homosexual. For over a hundred years Alger's personality has been shrouded in myth. It is ironic though, Alger, for all his influence during the 19th century, is no longer considered valid or meaningful. Even within his own lifetime, most boys gave up on his bizarre tales and turned to the scientific and more exciting Tom Swift adventures. When Alger died in 1899, six orphan boys, all grown up, returned to be his pall-bearers. Alger would have approved. Harold Thomas
