A little kingdom I possess,/ Where thoughts and feelings dwell;/ And very hard the task I find/ Of governing it well. It takes two flints to make a fire. Talent isn't genius and no amount of energy can make it so. I want to be great, or nothing. I won't be a commonplace dauber, so I don't intend to try any more. It takes very little fire to make a great deal of smoke nowadays, and notoriety is not real glory.

CREDIT SOURCE: All information contained herein was obtained at the Camden County Free Library, Voorhees NJ, USA BIOGRAPHY: Bronson Alcott founded several schools, but all of them failed, forcing Abigail and her daughters to undertake the financial support of the family. Later, Alcott often remarked that her entire career was inspired by her desire to compensate for her family's early discomfort. Alcott taught school, took in sewing, and worked briefly as a domestic servant. At age sixteen she began writing, convinced that she could eventually earn enough money to alleviate the family's poverty. In 1851, her first poem was published in Peterson's Magazine under the pseudonym Flora Fairfield, bringing Alcott little money but a great deal of confidence. It was during the ensuing years that Alcott published, as A. M. Barnard, a number of sensational serial stories, which were both popular and lucrative. Alcott is best known for her sentimental yet realistic depictions of nineteenth-century domestic life. Her Little Women series

(from Louisa May Alcott, Her Life Letters, and Journals Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown (now part of Philadelphia). During her childhood her family moved to Boston. She spent most of her life in the Boston-Concord area, and received almost all her early education from her father Bronson Alcott (1799-1888), who was member of the New England Transcendentalists. He was an idealistic, if impractical person, who believed in the spiritual life, as contrasted with the material life. When a visiting English author criticized her father's teaching methods, the schoolmaster Alcott moved with his family to Concord. Among the family friends were Theodore Parker, Henry David Thoreau , and Ralph Waldo Emerson . Alcott began to keep diary at the age of seven. Her first book, FLOWER FABLES (1854), a collection of tales, was originally written for Emerson's daughter Ellen. After the failure of her father's utopian community

    Little Women
by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) Type of Work:

    Sentimental, life drama Setting
A small New England town; mid 1800s Principal Characters
Mrs. March ("Marinee"), mother of four daughters
Mr. March, her husband, and army chaplain in the U.S. Civil War
    Meg, their 16-year-old daughter
Jo, 15, wants to be an independent writer (and serves as the novel's narrator)
Beth, a frail girl of 13, the "heart" of her family Amy, 12, the beautiful pampered youngest daughter Theodore Lawrence (Laurie), the boy who moves in next door Story Overveiw The upcoming Christmas looked like it would be a bleak affair to the four March girls. With their father at the Civil War battlefront, and their saintly mother, Marmee, as they called her, working to support her family, the holiday would be void of many of its traditional pleasures. With the dollar Marmee said they might spend, the girls each settled on buying simple gifts for their mother and for the Hummel family down the road; and receiving, in kind, surprise treats of ice cream and bonbons from rich old Mr. Lawrence next door. The girls resolved to face life as Pilgrims, to overcome their weaknesses, and be "good little women" by the time their father returned. The oldest, Meg, determined to enjoy her work more and fret less about her looks. The tomboy, Jo, pledged to better control her temper, upgrade her writing abilities and develop feminine qualities. Amy desired to be less selfish and less vain concerning her beautiful golden hair. Everyone believed Beth, the home-body, to be perfect, but she earnestly prayed to overcome her fear of people. The girls labored for the next year to acquire these qualities, with much success and occasional failure.

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) An ardent abolitionist and advocate of the suffrage movement, Alcott was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the close-knit community of transcendental philosophers, including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, located in Concord, Massachusetts. Concerned that her father's controversial teaching methods and frequent moves could not guarantee the family a steady income, Alcott took on odd jobs in order to earn money, and, drawing upon her experience writing plays for family performances, she began to write professionally. Alcott's first poem was published in 1852, and it was followed by a full-length book, Flower Fables , in 1855. Alcott's letters recounting her experiences as a nurse during the Civil War were collected in Hospital Sketches (1863), but it wasn't until the publication of the first volume of Little Women in 1868 that Alcott earned a devoted following and financial security. Written in scarcely two and a half months and based upon Alcott's own childhood, Little Women was followed by more books focusing on children and young adults, including
