HYMN by: Joseph Addison (1672-1719)
    HE spacious firmament on high,
    With all the blue ethereal sky,
    And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
    Their great Original proclaim.
    Th' unwearied Sun from day to day
    Does his Creator's power display;
    And publishes to every land
    The work of an Almighty hand.
    Soon as the evening shades prevail,
    The Moon takes up the wondrous tale;
    And nightly to the listening Earth
    Repeats the story of her birth:
    Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
    And all the planets in their turn,
    Confirm the tidings as they roll,
    And spread the truth from pole to pole.
    What though in solemn silence all
    Move round the dark terrestrial ball;
    What though nor real voice nor sound
    Amidst their radiant orbs be found?
    In Reason's ear they all rejoice,
    And utter forth a glorious voice;
    For ever singing as they shine,
    'The Hand that made us is divine.'

Joseph Addison
English essayist, poet, and dramatist, 1672-1719
There is nothing which we receive with so much reluctance as advice. He who would pass his declining years with honor and comfort, should, when young, consider that he may one day become old, and remember when he is old, that he has once been young. Great souls by instinct to each other turn, demand alliance, and in friendship burn. Eternity! thou pleasing, dreadful thought. Cheerfulness is the best promoter of health, and is as friendly to the mind as to the body. Better to die ten thousand deaths than wound my honor. Admiration is a very short-lived passion that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object, unless it be still fed with fresh discoveries, and kept alive by a perpetual succession of miracles rising into view. A woman seldom asks advice before she has bought her wedding clothes. Admiration is a very short-lived passion, that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object.

Joseph Addison
English essayist, poet, and dramatist, 1672-1719
It is the privilege of posterity to set matters right between those antagonists who, by their rivalry for greatness, divided a whole age. The greatest sweetener of human life is friendship. To raise this to the highest pitch of enjoyment, is a secret which but few discover. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn. Ridicule is generally made use of to laugh men out of virtue and good sense, by attacking everything praiseworthy in human life. If you wish to succeed in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother, and hope your guardian genius. There is nothing that makes its way more directly into the soul than beauty.

Addison and Steele
Collaborators on The Tatler and The Spectator Joseph Addison (1672-1719) Addison was born in Milston, Wiltshire and later educated at Salisbury, the Charterhouse, and finally at Queen's College, Oxford. After five years at Oxford, Addison left to travel Europe and earned a reputation as a great gentleman whose only fault was a weakness for wine and an occasional smoke. Finding himself without a job at 33 years old, he was asked to write a poem about the Duke of Marlborough's victory of Blenheim. The poem was so well liked by the Whig party that he was named Vice Commissioner of appeals and later Under-Secretary of State (Gibbs). Joseph Addison died in 1719 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. "It is as a tatler of small talk and a spectator of mankind that we cherish and love him, and owe as much pleasure to him as to any human being who ever wrote. He came in that artificial age, and began to speak with his noble, natural voice. He came, the gentle artist, who hit no unfair blows; the kind judge, who castigates only in smiling," wrote Thackeray in The Coverly Papers.

    Addison, Joseph 1672-1719, English essayist, poet, and statesman. He was educated at Charterhouse, where he was a classmate of Richard Steele, and at Oxford, where he became a distinguished classical scholar. His travels on the Continent from 1699 to 1703 were recorded in Remarks on Italy (1705). Addison first achieved prominence with The Campaign (1704), an epic celebrating the victory of Marlborough at Blenheim. The poem was commissioned by Lord Halifax, and its great success resulted in Addison's appointment in 1705 as undersecretary of state and in 1709 as secretary to the lord lieutenant of Ireland. He also held a seat in Parliament from 1708 until his death. Addison's most enduring fame was achieved as an essayist. In 1710 he began his contributions to the Tatler, which Richard Steele had founded in 1709. He continued to write for successive publications, including the Spectator (1711-12), the Guardian (1713), and the new

    Joseph Addison - (1672-1719)
    Addison was born in Wiltshire, but soon after Joseph's birth his father was appointed Dean of Lichfield and the Addison family moved into the Cathedral Close. Joseph Addison was educated at Lichfield Grammar School. As a young man his literary fame grew rapidly and with his friend Richard Steele, he contributed essays to the 'Tatler' . His later work, the 'Spectator' , containing essays by himself, Steele, Pope, and others, is the most famous and influential of all 18th century magazines. Addison presented the philosophical and literary ideas of his time to a wide audience in an easy, graceful style. In Sir Roger de Coverley, the Tory country squire, Addison created one of the great English comic characters. As well as essays, Addison wrote poetry, political journalism, and a tragedy, 'Cato' , which was one of the most popular plays of its day. Like his fellow Lichfeldians, Johnson and Garrick, Addison is buried in Westminster Abbey.
