Among those who signed the Declaration of Independence, and were conspicuous in the revolution, there existed, of course, a great diversity of intellectual endowments; nor did all render to their country, in those perilous days, the same important services. Like the luminaries of heavens each contributed his portion of influence; but, like them, they differed, as star differeth from star in glory. But in the constellation of great men, which adorned that era, few shone with more brilliancy, or exercised a more powerful influence than Samuel Adams.
This gentleman was born at Quincy, in Massachusetts, September 22d, 1722, in the neighborhood afterwards rendered memorable as the birth place of Hancock, and as the residence of the distinguished family which has given two presidents to the United States. His descent was from a respectable family, which emigrated to America with the first settlers of the land.

The declaration recounted the grievances of the colonies against the British crown and declared the colonies to be free and independent states. The proclamation of independence marked the culmination of a political process that had begun as a protest against oppressive restrictions imposed by the mother country on colonial trade, manufacturing, and political liberty and had developed into a revolutionary struggle resulting in the establishment of a new nation. After the U.S. was established, the statement of grievances in the declaration ceased to have any but historic significance. The political philosophy enunciated in the declaration, however, had a continuing influence on political developments in America and Europe for many years. It served as a source of authority for the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution. Its influence is manifest in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, adopted by the National Assembly of France in 1789, during the French Revolution. In the 19th century, various peoples of Europe and of Latin America fighting for freedom incorporated in their programs the principles formulated in the Declaration of Independence.

Painting: by Walter Gilman Page, 1893 Governors of Massachusetts Samuel Adams (1722-1803) Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Samuel Adams was called "the greatest incendiary in the Empire" by Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson. Two decades later, the greatest incendiary would be Governor himself. Adams founded the Sons of Liberty, a group dedicated to methodically resisting English rule in all of its American colonies. It was Adams who gave the signal to commence with the Boston Tea Party. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1765, he drafted the resolution against the Stamp Act and served on the House's Committee of Correspondence. He was President of the Massachusetts Senate in 1781, and Lieutenant Governor for his friend, Governor John Hancock from 1789 to 1793. Among Governor Adams' chief concerns was delineating the division of powers between federal and state government. He was known to have advocated for extending public education to girls and to have required that children be taught to read before starting their public education. After being elected Governor four times in his own right, Adams chose to retire in 1797 and lived out the remainder of his life in Boston.
