Boston Tea Party
Samuel Adams 1722-1803
When and where did it happen? Who attended the party What caused it? What happened as a result? ... Want to learn more? Samuel Adams was a Harvard graduate. Later he took control of the family business, and lost his father's fortune. But he succeeded in the task of moving America toward independence. Adams's true talent lay in rousing people to action in support of a cause. He was a fiery orator and a master of propaganda, and he used words as a weapon. Typical of the patriots was their most effective leader, Samuel Adams of Massachusetts, who toiled tirelessly for a single end: independence. From the time he graduated from Harvard College, Adams was a public servant in some capacity-inspector of chimneys, tax-collector, moderator of town meetings. A consistent failure in business, he was shrewd and able in politics, with the New England town meeting the theater of his action. Adam's tools were men: his goal was to win the confidence and support of ordinary people, to free them from awe of their social and political superiors, make them aware of their own importance, and arouse them to action. To do this, he published articles in newspapers and made speeches in town meetings, instigating resolutions appealing to the colonists' democratic impulses. In 1772, he induced the Boston town meeting to select a "committee of correspondence" to state the rights and grievances of the colonists, to communicate with other towns on these matters, and to request them to draft replies. Quickly, the idea spread. Committees were set up in virtually all the colonies, and out of them soon grew a base of effective revolutionary organizations. In 1773, Britain furnished Adams and his co-workers with a desired issue.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude
greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace.

Samuel Adams Samuel Adams was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 27, 1722. He was a leader of the fight against British colonial rule, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Adams was a cousin of John Adams who became President of the United States. Samuel Adams graduated from Harvard College with a Master of Arts degree in 1743. After college he entered private business, and throughout this period was an outspoken participant in Boston town meetings. When his business failed in 1764 Adams entered politics full-time, and was elected to the Massachusetts legislature. He lead the effort to establish a committee of correspondence that published a Declaration of Colonial Rights that Adams had written. He was a vocal opponent of several laws passed by the British Parliament to raise revenue in the American Colonies, including the Tea Act which gave a British trading company a monopoly on the import of tea into the colonies. This opposition reached its peak on December 16, 1773 when a group of Bostonians dumped a British cargo of tea into Boston Harbor. This act of resistance is referred to as the Boston Tea Party.

70. Samuel Adams (1722--1803), American Statesman
Samuel Adams (17221803), American statesman, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, on the 27th of September 1722.

Samuel Adams (17221803), American statesman
The intense excitement which followed the ``Boston Massacre'' Adams skilfully used to secure the removal of the soldiers from the town to a fort in the harbour. He it was, also, who managed the proceedings of the ``Boston Tea Party,'' and later he was moderator of the convention of Massachusetts towns called to protest against the Boston Port Bill. One of the objects of the expedition sent by Governor Thomas Gage to Lexington (q.v.) and Concord on April 18-19, 1775, was the capture of Adams and John Hancock, temporarily staying in Lexington, and when Gage issued his proclamation of pardon on June 12 he excepted these two, whose offences, he said, were ``of too flagitious a Nature to admit of any other Consideration than that of condign Punishment.''

    Samuel Adams
Signer of the Declaration of Independence Sam Adams was born in Boston Massachusetts on September 22, 1722 to Samuel and Mary Fifield Adams. He was one of 12 children born to this wealth prominent Boston family. His education consisted of his attendance at a Boston Grammar School and later Harvard University. He was married 2 times and had 2 children by his first wife. Samuel was not a good businessman and caused the family brewer to go bankrupt. Afterwards he turned to politics and became one of the first American political leaders to encourage the colonist to separate from England. One of his first efforts to convince the colonists to free themselves from British rule was the writing of his famous "circular letter". This letter stirred up discontentment among the colonist. Some other freedom actions on Samuel’s part were his protesting of the Stamp Act, his founding of the Sons of Liberty, and his organizing of the Boston Tea Part. Samuel Adams was also a member of the first and second Continental Congress and was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1794, he was elected governor of Massachusetts and served until 1797. Samuel died Oct. 2, 1803 in Boston.
