Adams, Samuel (17221803). American patriot, one of the leaders of resistanceto British policy in Massachusetts before the American War of Independence.
http://www.freegk.com/politics/adams_samuel.php
Adams, Samuel (1722-1803)
American patriot, one of the leaders of resistance to British policy in Massachusetts before the American War of Independence. Adams was born in Boston on September 27, 1722, and educated at Harvard College (now Harvard University). After leaving college in 1740, he was successively a law student, a clerk in a countinghouse, and a merchant. His business failed, and he later became a partner with his father in a brewery. This enterprise also failed after his father died. Meanwhile, he had been an active participant in Boston political circles. In 1756 he was elected tax collector of Boston, a position he held for eight years. His outspoken opposition to strict enforcement of the Sugar and Molasses Act in 1764 brought him into prominence in colonial politics. In 1765, in the course of the controversy aroused by the Stamp Act, he drafted the instructions to the Boston representatives in the General Court, the legislative body of Massachusetts. He was elected to the lower house of the General Court in the same year. The radical majority in the lower house elected him clerk in 1766, and while serving in this position, which he held until 1774, he gradually assumed leadership of the movement in Massachusetts that advocated independence from Great Britain. As such he was a consistent and bitter opponent of Thomas Hutchinson, an aristocratic political leader, who served as the lieutenant-governor of the colony from 1758 to 1771 and as royal governor from 1771 to 1774.

Education: Harvard
Occupation: lawyer, businessman
Political Affiliation:
Religious Affiliation: Congregationalist
Summary of Religious Views:
Samuel Adams was devoted to public worship, as the following anecdote illustrates: When Congress was meeting in York, Pennsylvania, Adams would attend services conducted in German when no alternative services were available, even though he didn't speak German.
Quotations: "As neither reason requires nor religion permits the contrary, every man living in or out of a state of civil society has a right peaceably and quietly to worship God according to the dictates of his conscience." The Rights of the Colonists , 20 November 1772 "In regard to religion, mutual toleration in the different professions thereof is what all good and candid minds in all ages have ever practised, and, both by precept and example, inculcated on mankind. And it is now generally agreed among Christians that this spirit of toleration, in the fullest extent consistent with the being of civil society, is the chief characteristical mark of the Church. Insomuch that Mr. Locke has asserted and proved, beyond the possibility of contradiction on any solid ground, that such toleration ought to be extended to all whose doctrines are not subversive of society. The only sects which he thinks ought to be, and which by all wise laws are excluded from such toleration, are those who teach doctrines subversive of the civil government under which they live."

The cousin of John Adams, Samuel worked in his father's brewery before turning to politics. "While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued," he said. "Once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader." A skilled writer and orator, Adams was a passionate advocate against England's rule over the colonies. He and his fellow Sons of Liberty revolutionaries played a central role in organizing the Boston Tea Party of 1773.

Adams, Samuel 1722-1803, political leader in the American Revolution, signer of the Declaration of Independence, b. Boston, Mass.; second cousin of John Adams. An unsuccessful businessman, he became interested in politics and was a member (1765-74) and clerk (1766-74) of the lower house of the Massachusetts legislature. As colonial resistance to British laws stiffened, Adams spoke for the discontented and replaced James Otis as leader of the extremists. He drafted a protest against the Stamp Act in 1765 and was one of the organizers of the non-importation agreement (1767) against Great Britain to force repeal of the Townshend Acts . He drew up the Circular Letter to the other colonies, denouncing the acts as taxation without representation. More important, he used his able pen in colonial newspapers and pamphlets to stir up sentiment against the British. His polemics helped to bring about the Boston Massacre . With the help of such men as John Hancock he organized the revolutionary Sons of Liberty and helped to foment revolt through the Committees of Correspondence. He was the moving spirit in the Boston Tea Party See writings ed. by H. A. Cushing (4 vol., 1904-08, repr. 1968); biographies by J. C. Miller (1936, repr. 1960), S. Beach (1965), W. V. Samuel Adams was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, the son of a prominent landowner and brewer, and cousin and political mentor of John Adams . He studied at Harvard College and received his degree in 1743. Following college he began the study of law, but soon gave in to family pressures and took a position as a clerk in the counting house of Thomas Cushing, one of the colony's leading merchants. Adams was not a success in business and worked for Cushing only a short time before beginning his own short-lived venture. In spite of his lack of success at business (failing as a brewer and tax collector and wasting an inheritance), Adams displayed true genius in politics. He excelled at political discourse, writing and strategy. In 1765, Adams was elected to the General Court (legislature) of Massachusetts, representing the town of Boston. His abilities were recognized by his fellow legislators and he soon rose to a leadership position. Adams was offered positions by royal officials that would have enriched him, but he refused and remained chronically in debt. Adams was prominent in organizing protests over the Sugar Act (1764) and the Stamp Act (1765). His continued outspoken criticism of English policies did much to foment public unrest, which erupted into violence in the

Samuel Adams By Alyanna Japanese Translation Samuel Adams life was very exciting because of the many things he did. Samuel Adams was born on September 9, 1722. Samuel Adams was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. Adams' father was deeply involved in politics and his mother was a deeply religious woman. Adams entered college in the late 1730s and graduated in 1743. Adams was considered a leader because he influenced a lot of people to fight against the British. Samuel Adams helped to defeat the Townshed Act, organized the Boston Tea Party and supported the Continental Congress. Though he was not that successful in business, he stood up for not being taxed without representation. Adams also organized the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty were a secret organization against the British Colonial Rule. Also the Sons of Liberty organized The Boston Tea Party. In the Boston Tea Party they dressed up as Mohawk Indians, and dumped 17,000,000 pounds of tea into the ocean for a protest against the British. They did this because England raised taxes very high on tea. After the Boston Tea Party Adams fought in the war against Great Britain. After the war Adams signed the Declaration of Independence and was Governor of Massachusetts for 4 years. Samuel Adams shaped America by giving Americans the push they needed to fight against the British, so they would not take over America's land, money, and freedom. Modern day Americans enjoy the benefit of what Samuel Adams did. October 2, 1803 Adams died.

Samuel Adams Advocates American Independence Samuel Adams (1722-1803) August 1, 1776 Samuel Adams, one of the most ardent of the Founding Fathers in his desire for independence from England, delivered this speech to a numerous audience at the State House in Philadelphia on August 1, 1776. Adams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, also served as Delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774 and was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1794.
    Abridged.
Our forefathers, 'tis said, consented to be subject to the laws of Great Britain. I will not at the present time dispute it, nor mark out the limits and conditions of their submission; but will it be denied that they contracted to pay obedience and to be under the control of Great Britain because it appeared to them most beneficial in their then present circumstances and situations? We, my countrymen, have the same right to consult and provide for our happiness which they had to promote theirs. If they had a view to posterity in their contracts, it must have been to advance the felicity of their descendants. If they erred in their expectations and prospects, we can never be condemned for a conduct which they would have recommended had they foreseen our present condition. The part, therefore, which we then took, and the miseries to which we exposed ourselves ought to be charged to our affection to Britain. These Colonies granted more than their proportion to the support of the war. They raised, clothed, and maintained nearly twenty-five thousand men, and so sensible were the people of England of our great exertions that a message was annually sent to the House of Commons purporting "that his majesty, being highly satisfied with the zeal and vigor with which his faithful subjects in North America had exerted themselves in defense of his majesty's just rights and possessions, recommends it to the House to take the same into consideration and enable him to give them a proper compensation."
