WebQuest Taskonomy:
A Taxonomy of Tasks
The task is the single most important part of a WebQuest. It provides a goal and focus for student energies and it makes concrete the curricular intentions of the designer. A well designed task is doable and engaging, and elicits thinking in learners that goes beyond rote comprehension. There must be fifty ways to task your learner. Since 1995, teachers have been adapting the WebQuest model to their own needs and settings, and from their collective wisdom and experience some common task formats have emerged. This taxonomy describes those formats and suggests ways to optimize their use. It provides a language for discussing WebQuest tasks that should enhance our ability to design them well. It's likely that the task in a given WebQuest will combine elements of two or more of these task categories. The categories below are in no particular order other than the placement of Retelling tasks first because of their simplicity and borderline status as the foundation of a good WebQuest. With eleven other task types to choose from, it's time to go beyond mere retelling!

    Taxonomy: Classifying Life
At least 1.7 million species of living organisms have been discovered, and the list grows longer every year (especially of insects in the tropical rain forest). How are they to be classified? Ideally, classification should be based on homology ; that is, shared characteristics that have been inherited from a common ancestor . The more recently two species have shared a common ancestor,
    • the more homologies they share, and
    • the more similar these homologies are.
Until recent decades, the study of homologies was limited to However, since the birth of molecular biology, homologies can now also be studied at the level of
    • proteins and
    • DNA

The figure shows the bones in the forelimbs of three mammals: human, whale, and bat (obviously not drawn to the same scale!). Although used for such different functions as throwing, swimming, and flying, the same basic structural plan is evident in them all. In each case, the bone shown in color is the radius Body parts are considered homologous if they have
      • the same basic structure
      • the same relationship to other body parts, and, as it turns out

Bloom's Taxonomy and Critical Thinking
Contributed by Barbara Fowler, Longview Community College. Bloom's Taxonomy divides the way people learn into three domains. One of these is the cognitive domain which emphasizes intellectual outcomes. This domain is further divided into categories or levels. The key words used and the type of questions asked may aid in the establishment and encouragement of critical thinking, especially in the higher levels. Level 1: Knowledge - exhibits previously learned material by recalling facts, terms, basic concepts and answers. Key words: who, what, why, when, omit, where, which, choose, find, how, define, label, show, spell, list, match, name, relate, tell, recall, select Questions: What is . . . ? How is . . . ? How did happen? How would you explain . . . ? Why did . . . ? How would you describe . . . ? When did . . . ? Can you recall . . . ? How would you show . . . ? Can you select . . . ? Growing Muskmelons in the Home Garden
HYG-1615-93
Ted W. Gastier
History and Taxonomy
Muskmelons originated in the hot valleys of southwest Asia. There are numerous botanical varieties of muskmelons including: netted melons, cantaloupe melons, winter (casaba) melons, snake or serpent melons, and mango or lemon melons. Technically, cantaloupes are only those muskmelons with a rough, warty surface and a hard rind; however, the name cantaloupe has been applied to the netted varieties of muskmelons. Whether you call them muskmelons or cantaloupes, we can agree that a vine-ripened melon from your garden adds high dessert quality and fine flavor to your family's diet. In addition, muskmelons are an excellent source of vitamins A and C.
Climate
Muskmelons are a warm season crop, adapted to mean monthly temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees F, and needing ample soil moisture and plant nutrients for growth. During the ripening period the best quality melons are produced when hot, dry conditions prevail. Under Ohio's humid summer conditions, choosing a site with adequate soil drainage as well as good air drainage can help to ensure the desired quality. It is important to allow the leaf surfaces to dry to control foliar diseases.
Fertilizers and Lime
Fertilizer and lime applications are best based on soil test results. Soil sample bags, forms and instructions are available from your county Extension office. In general, when using black plastic mulch, the following amounts of fertilizer nutrients per 1,000 square feet of plot space would be adequate: 1 pound of actual nitrogen, 2 pounds of phosphorus (P

C1 Bloom's Taxonomy
Following the 1948 Convention of the American Psychological Association, B S Bloom took a lead in formulating a classification of "the goals of the educational process". Three "domains" of educational activities were identified. The first of these, named the Cognitive Domain, involves knowledge and the development of intellectual attitudes and skills. (The other domains are the Affective Domain and the Psychomotor Domain, and need not concern us here). Eventually, Bloom and his co-workers established a hierarchy of educational objectives, which is generally referred to as Bloom's Taxonomy , and which attempts to divide cognitive objectives into subdivisions ranging from the simplest behaviour to the most complex. It is important to realise that the divisions outlined above are not absolutes and that other systems or hierarchies have been devised. However, Bloom's taxonomy is easily understood and widely applied.

Soil Classification
Canadian Classification
The Canadian Classification (Taxonomy) organizes soils first into Orders, then Great Groups, then Sub-Groups, then Families and finally Series or Associations.
Soil Order The highest or broadest level of classification is the Order reflecting which of the soil forming factors had the most influence of soil formation. Nine orders are recognized with specific horizon characteristics. Within Saskatchewan most of the soil orders are represented, although the main agricultural area is dominated by soils of the Chernozemic Order. The northern agricultural/forest transition areas are mainly Luvisolic soils and boreal forest soils are dominated by Brunisolic soils. To the far north, the subsoil rarely thaws so that we have permafrost giving rise to Crysolic soils. Wherever there is standing water and restricted drainage, Organic soils form, usually in the wetter forested regions. Gleysolic soils develop in areas that are subjected to periodic waterlogging. Parent material that contains a high proportion of soluble salts give rise to Solonetzic soils.

Study Hall In 1956, Benjamin Bloom headed a group of educational psychologists who developed a classification of levels of intellectual behavior important in learning. Bloom found that over 95 % of the test questions students encounter require them to think only at the lowest possible level...the recall of information. Bloom identified six levels within the cognitive domain, from the simple recall or recognition of facts, as the lowest level, through increasingly more complex and abstract mental levels, to the highest order which is classified as evaluation. Verb examples that represent intellectual activity on each level are listed here.

INTRODUCTION During the Mesozoic Era approximately 245 to 65 million years ago, whilst dinosaurs roamed the land and flying pterosaurs soared in the air, the seas were dominated by a variety of highly adapted reptiles. One of the first arrays of fossil vertebrates to be recognised, these prehistoric swimming reptiles occurred in numerous morphologies and have been classified into a variety of groups. This Web Site is an attempt to bring information about one particular group of fascinating prehistoric marine reptiles to the attention of a wider audience whilst also being useful to anyone already interested in the Sauropterygia Liopleurodon ferox Original artwork by A. Probably the most popular and widely recognised of these groups are the long necked plesiosauroids with four large flippers, short tails and barrel shaped bodies.
