Sociobiology
The term sociobiology behavioral ecology and evolutionary ecology are synonyms) refers broadly to the application of the principles of Darwinian evolutionary theory to the study of behavior. It grew out of the integration of classical ethology (the naturalistic study of animal and human behavior), population ecology, and population genetics during the 1960s and early 1970s.

  • Darwin's Progress - National Review - Britannica.com Wilson's orthodox Darwinian sociobiology made countless enemies in academia. Centrist anthropologists John Tooby and Leda Cosmides accordingly relaunched sociobiology under the neutral name of "evolutionary psychology." Pronouncing themselves the truest True Believers in equality, Tooby and Cosmides portrayed human nature as almost monolithically uniform and proclaimed that evolutionary psychology should study only human similarities. But while egalitarianism served as a useful cover for infiltrating neo-Darwinism into academia, it proved a largely useless methodology for learning about humanity. Why? Because knowledge consists of contrasts. To learn much about human nature, we need to look for patterns of similarities and differences among humans.

One doesn't have to be a feminist to note the absurdity of an argument that posits that women are dominating the culture. If I was a developing fetus and had a choice, I'd still choose to be white and male if I was going to born in North America. The vast majority of upper-level positions and opportunities in American society still go to white males, as anyone who follows these things knows. What in the world does this have to do with sociobiology, anyway? Curiously....Scott Hatfield (kennesaw@ccfnet.com)

TheUltimate Theoryof Personality
Ever since Darwin came out with his theory of evolution, people - including Darwin himself have been speculating on how our social behaviors (and feelings, attitudes, and so on) might also be affected by evolution. After all, if the way our bodies look and work as biological creatures can be better understood through evolution, why not the things we do with those bodies? The entemologist E. O Wilson was the first to formalize the idea that social behavior could be explained evolutionarily, and he called his theory sociobiology. At first, it gained attention only in biological circles even there it had strong critics. When sociologists and psychologists caught wind of it, the controversy really got started. At that time, sociology was predominantly structural-functionalist, with a smattering of Marxists and feminists. Psychology was still dominated by behaviorist learning theory, with humanism starting to make some headway. Not one of these theories has much room for the idea that we, as human beings, could be so strongly determined by evolutionary biology! Over time, Wilson's sociobiology found more and more supporters among biologists, psychologists, and even anthropologists. Only sociology has remained relatively unaffected.

The New Synthesis
Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Edition
Edward O. Wilson
Harvard University Press is proud to announce the re-release of the complete original version of Sociobiology: The New Synthesis now available in paperback for the first time. When this classic work was first published in 1975, it created a new discipline and started a tumultuous round in the age-old nature versus nurture debate. Although voted by officers and fellows of the international Animal Behavior Society the most important book on animal behavior of all time, Sociobiology is probably more widely known as the object of bitter attacks by social scientists and other scholars who opposed its claim that human social behavior, indeed human nature, has a biological foundation. The controversy surrounding the publication of the book reverberates to the present day. In the introduction to this Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Edition, Edward O. Wilson shows how research in human genetics and neuroscience has strengthened the case for a biological understanding of human nature. Human sociobiology, now often called evolutionary psychology, has in the last quarter of a century emerged as its own field of study, drawing on theory and data from both biology and the social sciences. For its still fresh and beautifully illustrated descriptions of animal societies, and its importance as a crucial step forward in the understanding of human beings, this anniversary edition of

Due to the occurrence of a SECOND shooting, in two weeks, in San Diego High Schools (Santana High School; Granite Hills High School), the basic premise and thesis is being thrown out without delay. Namely: based on the observation of E.O. Wilson, Harvard professor, that menopause and menstruation serve to maximize primate gene propagation, having observed already with the greater biologist/zoologist community the "social" and "political" behavior of higher species, the "affiliation" (linked below) questions whether making straight men afraid of being wrongly ferreted out as gay and insecure in their masculinity served to increase population and create angry inadequate (masculine-insecure) fighters, thereby ENABLING ANCIENT DESPOTS TO RUMBLE.
Ironically, this served, after stigmatizing gays toward this originally undesigned end, to induce lesbians (didn't need to get erect; needed support anyway (a factor of non J/C/M homosexuality, though there is a far greater percentage of it in Western nations), to CAUSE THE PROPAGATION MAINLY OF LESBIANS: EVIDENCE FOR COMMUNITY SOURCE STOCK, A CRITICAL MASS OF LESBIANS HAVING BEEN ATTAINED (Xq28 "ONLY PASSES MATERNALLY""Science," 7/16/93, and "N.Y. I agree that sociolbiology is not what one would consider a well accepted
facet of sociology, but to deny that evolution has affected the human
species as much as any other animal is to deny an integral part of what
has helped to create who we are today. There are some excellent readings
out there on the subject, and if anyone is interested there is a book by
Barkow, Cosmides and Tooby "The Adapted Mind: Evolutionary Psychology and
the Generation of Culture."
Hopefully, sociologists will eventually become receptive to the kinds of
insights evolutionary theory can give with respect to the human species. Mind you, however, I am NOT saying that culture is not a HUGE influence on people. I just don't think we can exclude evolution entirely. Anyone else have a thought on the matter?

That's right. But he does make a distinction between "pop" sociobiology
(which is the "just-so" kind) and more rigorous sociobiology, of which
he also gives examples.
It's not the name Wilson: The sociobiologist that Kitcher is criticising is E.O. Wilson. The one who co-authored the article With Sober is D. S. Wilson! This archive was generated by hypermail 2b30 Tue Feb 13 2001 - 16:23:18 GMT
