The Histotech's Portal This site was created by Steven Slap and Peggy Wenk for their "Introduction to the Internet for Histotechs" workshop at the 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 NSH national meetings. It has been designed to be used by Histotechs as the start-up page in their browser, and contains links to other websites of interest. Since the site has grown so large, we have introduced this "Welcome" page so that repeat visitors can go right to the section they need, without waiting for the home page to load. Histology of Nerve Tissues
A. Hunter Department of BioMedical Sciences, Marischal College University of Aberdeen This short suite of programs, written using the Asymetrix Toolbook authoring package, is for use by pre-clinical medical and science undergraduates as part of their histology practical classes in Anatomy. The material covers the macro and microscopic structure of the principle components of the human nervous system. It uses an extensive collection of digitised images obtained from histological sections, together with appropriate tutorial material linked to a series of problems and multiple choice questions. It allows several attempts at each problem offering hints and tips before giving the correct answer. The program is divided into three main sections linked together with a general introduction. The sections comprise:
  • The Peripheral Nervous System The Central Nervous System The Autonomic Nervous System
  • Features
    • Highly structured self-paced teaching module linked to an extensive image database. Good attempt to alleviate technical difficulties of teaching histology in large practical classes.

Cardiovascular Image Slide # Tissue Mag Feature cv.1 Diagram General description of the cardiovascular system. The three layers of vessel walls are clearly depicted on this slide. cv.2 Elastic artery - Aorta LP The relatively thick tunica intima, the larger tunica media with elastic lamellae, and the wispy appearing tunica adventitia in this sample. cv.3 Elastic artery - Aorta HP The prominent elastic lamellae in the tunica media layer of this vessel and the nuclei of the numerous smooth muscle cells running between these lamellae. cv.4 Elastic artery - Arota HP This is a special stain to depict elastin (Verhoeff's/Vangieson or VVG stain). Two noticeable features on this slide include the abundance of dark staining elastin in the tunica media and the presence of Vasa Vasorum coursing through the tunica adventitia of this elastic artery. cv.5 Elastic artery - Aorta HP This is another example of a VVF stained elastic artery. Again, notice the abundance of elastin (dark staining material) that is present in the tunica media of this sample. cv.6

Extracellular Matrix Tissue Types Histology is the branch of biological science concerned with the study of cells and the extracellular matix of animal and plant tissues. Tissues are defined as cells with their ground substance acting together in the performance of a particular function. Histology requires knowledge of cell biology chemistry , physiology, immunology and pathology. Tissues are routinely cut into thin translucent sections that are then differentially stained and examined under a microscope. The primary tissue categories in animal histology are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous. We include a discussion of blood here too as a special tissue type. The human body is composed of cells organized together with extracellular matrix into tissues having specific characteristics relating to specific functions. Each tissue is composed of several cell types and supporting extracellular matrix. About 200 cell types are found within the human body. Cells within a tissue must communicate with one another. This may be effected by a receptor mediated signalling mechanism or by direct cellular contact. In some tissues, cells are he

Anatomy
The vagina is a canal that extends from the external vulva to the cervix . The vaginal walls can be easily distended but are normally 7.5 cm in length anteriorly and 9 cm long posteriorly. The upper portion of the vagina encircles the vaginal part of the uterine cervix. The vagina touches the empty bladder on the ventral and superior surface. Inferiorly the vagina adheres to the posterior wall of the urethra and opens adjacent to the labia minora. The vaginal lining has many transverse ridges, or folds. Vaginal tissues receive blood supply from uterine arteries and sometimes branches of the internal iliac artery. Blood returns to the venous system through veins that empty into the internal iliac veins. Lymphatic drainage is via the external and internal iliac lymph nodes and superficial inguinal lymph nodes. The muscles of the pelvic floor provide important support to the vagina and
