25. Science Explained, Explains Cloning, Cell Biology And Developmental Biology.
Cell biology, and developmental biology from zygote to adult, including cells, nuclear transfers, microinjection, and development.
http://www.synapses.co.uk/science/clone.html
The Cloning of Dolly
Dr Jamie Love I've decided to make cloning one of the first topics in this first issue of Science Explained because the folks who created Dolly are acquaintances of mine. (Yes, I am a name dropper, aren't I?) A few kilometers from my home lives Dolly, the world's first mammalian clone; not counting identical twins. (They're clones too.)
What makes Dolly different from identical twins is that she was grown from a cell taken from an ADULT animal! Many bright, well-respected scientists said it couldn't be done. Dr Ian Wilmut, who is in charge of the lab that created Dolly, admits that he had his doubts. However the hard work and imaginative thinking of his staff made it all possible. How did they do it and what did they do? First some background to teach you the basics of developmental biology
An oocyte (pronounced "oh-oh-sight") is an unfertilized egg and it has no chance of developing into an animal unless it's fertilized. A recently fertilized egg is called a zygote (pronounced "zye-goat"). Funny how the last two letters in the alphabet describe the first stage of an individual animal. For example, a frog zygote normally divides and grows into a complete animal, a tadpole. Later that tadpole will develop into an adult frog.

This tutorial, developed by Dr. Jeff Hardin, University of Wisconsin, is aimed at undergraduate university students. It is designed to aid in the study of morphogenetic events during early amphibian development. Incorporated in the site are detailed explanations pertaining to the use of amphibians as study animals and pictorials of a developing amphibian embryo. Topics covered include fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation and neurulation. The Fish Net This site provides excellent diagrams of the zebrafish embryo at 24, 48, 72 and 120 hours of development, including both dorsal and lateral views. It gives some neat information on how to use zebrafish in lab experiments, and how to maintain them in the laboratory. It also provides links to other zebrafish lab servers. Glossary This sites provides a lengthy and detailed glossary of terms that are related to the study of developmental biology, with particular reference to fish development. The glossary covers terms from actinotrichia to zygote.

Advanced Developmental Biology Advanced Developmental Biology and Developmental Biology have now been merged into a single resource: Dynamic Development . This approach is based upon the assumption that learning is a continuum; we learn the basics first and build upon them as our knowledge expands. Each module begins with an introduction to the topic. Under "Digging Deeper", additional material is provided for a more in-depth analysis of the topic. Not all modules have had additional material added, but I'm working on them and will post them as soon as possible. You, too, can help! All members of the developmental biology community are encouraged to participate in the evolution of this project. Contributors are invited to submit modules on topics in developmental biology. Authors of all material will be identified.

http://www.mcdb.yale.edu/
Introduction Yale's Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology offers a wide-ranging program of study and research leading to the Ph.D. degree. The program is supervised by approximately thirty faculty members working in six areas:
  • Biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemical biology Genetics Cell and developmental biology Neurobiology Plant sciences Biotechnology
Students whose interests overlap two or more of these areas are encouraged to develop a special program of study for themselves. In addition, students may develop programs of study in conjunction with other University departments such as Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, or with other schools within the University such as the School of Medicine. The Department is located primarily in the twelve-story Kline Biology Tower and in the Osborn Memorial Laboratories. These are located on Yale's Science Hill, adjacent to Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Geophysics, Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Peabody Museum of Natural History.
