ACLU News - The Newspaper of the ACLU of Northern California, May/June 2001
Gabe Martinez Wins ACLU Scholarship
for Youth Activism
In addition to preparing for his graduation this month, Alhambra High School senior Gabriel Martinez is working on a very important project - he is leading a student walkout to protest the school superintendent's firing of the principal, without telling the students why. Activism seems to come naturally to Martinez, a leader with the Youth Advisory Committee of the ACLU-NC Howard A. Friedman First Amendment Education Project. And it has its rewards. Martinez has just been named as one of 12 high school seniors nationwide to be awarded the ACLU College Scholarship for Youth Activism Award, worth $4,000. The scholarship was established by the national ACLU with a grant from an anonymous donor to recognize the efforts of graduating seniors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties throughout high school. Martinez joined the ACLU Howard A. Friedman Education Project as a sophomore, when he joined the summer field investigation on homelessness. Following the trip, Martinez spoke in high school classrooms all over northern California. "He was often surrounded by students who wanted to ask him more questions," said Project Director Nancy Otto. "I watched as he patiently offered his point of view, and allowed students the dignity to differ with his opinion. He is an amazing teacher." While earning top grades at Alhambra High School in Martinez, Martinez also served on the ACLU's Youth Advisory Committee, volunteered his time to work on ACLU initiative campaigns, and served as president of his school's ACLU Club.

UPDATED MARCH 15, 2002
The Luna Preservation Fund This has been fully funded at this time. Thanks to all for your contributions. Bioneers Conference Youth Scholarships
To be held October 18 - 20, 2002 in San Rafael, California In October, 2000, Julia participated in her 3rd consecutive Bioneers Conference , this time on the ground. It became apparent in the youth activism workshops Julia co-facilitated that there is a need to get more youth involved in the conference. Youth today face a future which can be overwhelming and frightening. The need to support the efforts of those grasping for ways to heal their world is essential. What better venue than a Bioneers Conference to supply our youth with all the needed tools and contacts. The Bioneers team has enthusiastically embraced this idea. To show their support they are offering 20 scholarships for current and future youth leaders to attend the next conference to be held October 18 - 20, 2002. The scholarships are for conference fees only. Circle of Life is fundraising for travel and lodging expenses, particularly for disadvantaged youth who cannot attend without this assistance. In addition to the two youth activism workshops, the youth will host an evening dance party in a sacred potlatch theme. The dance is open to all Bioneers participants. We anticipate there will also be informal opportunities for youth to connect and expand on ideas generated in the workshops.

Hello, Everybody
When I first subscribed to this list, someone gave me the e-mail
address for a group of youth who were anti-dp. I e-mailed the address
several times but never got a response. (I think it was YAACP or
something similar.)
Is there another group you know of that I should contact? I'd
like to be in touch with people my own age about this issue but I'm not
really sure where to look.
Which is not to say you guys aren't terrific I've met some
fabulous people through this list and have really gained a lot. There will always be something else I can learn, or a new twist on the issue to consider, and I just want to let you know you all get a big *kudos* from me ... keep it up!

Tuesday, February 4, 2003 ANCYL worried over drop in youth activism JOHANNESBURG The ANC Youth League, concerned about a dramatic drop in political activity among young people, said yesterday it plans to campaign for more resources to be set aside for improving living conditions and opportunities for the youth. Youth League president Malusi Gigaba, addressing a media conference here after a weekend meeting of the league's national executive, said that political activism had fallen since the 1990s. The league had started a campaign to mobilise young people ahead of the next general election and it would soon embark on an extensive drive to encourage young voters to obtain the correct ID documents and register to vote. Research by Statistics South Africa and other bodies indicated that among the problems facing young people were unemployment, lack of economic opportunities, lack of relevant skills and the prevalence of HIV-Aids. These and other issues had demoralised many young people, Gigaba said. The youth, however, remained a critical and active player in the reconstruction and development of the country.

According to the federal census taken in 2000, more than 25% of Washington State's residents are under 18 years old. How are young people included in decision-making across Washington's communities? The Washington Youth Voice Directory will show you how. There is NO ONE "youth voice." We use the term as a simple connection point - not as a single point of connection. The Freechild Project is based in Olympia, Washington. Our work is heavily inspired by the young people and adults working statewide to make youth voice heard, respected, and acted on. The following are programs and opportunities in Washington state where young people can become actively engaged in their communities. Each has its own attributes and challenges, and offers young people varying amounts of support and authenticity. These organizations are listed in NO PARTICULAR ORDER. For more information on any of these programs, go to their website or contact them directly. Printer-friendly version Email to a friend Whenever you try to persuade someone to do something or to see something your way, you are engaging in advocacy Activism simply means taking positive, direct action to achieve a political or social end. Webster's defines advocacy as "the action of advocating, pleading for, or supporting" and an advocate as "one who pleads the cause of another." One way to draw the distinction between volunteerism and advocacy is the parable of the Good Samaritan. Parable of the Good Samaritan "A girl was standing at the side of a river and saw someone flailing around in the water. She jumped in and swam toward the drowning man. With all her strength, she managed to save him. As she caught her breath, she saw another person being carried downstream. Again, she leapt into the rushing waters and, though more slowly this time, she dragged this man to safety. But then she heard the screams of more drowning victims. With Herculean effort, she was able to save just one of them. In the meantime, two more victims were swept through the rough water beyond her reach. She spent the rest of the afternoon and every ounce of her strength saving some and losing many others to the raging current. She was so busy being a Good Samaritan that she never had the chance to go upstream and see why all the people were falling into the river."
