For Middle East, North Africa, Arab and regional information visit Arab Countries Yemen History Once part of the ancient Sabaean kingdom (fl. c.750 B.C.–115 B.C.), Yemen was later ruled by the Himyarites, Romans, Ethiopians, and Persians. It was conquered by Muslim Arabs in the 7th cent. A.D., and in the 16th cent. it became part of the Ottoman Empire. The northwestern portion bordering on the Red Sea was established in 1918 as an independent kingdom (known as Yemen or Northern Yemen) ruled by the Rassite dynasty, imams of the Zaidi Shiite sect of Islam. In 1962 an army coup led to the proclamation of a republic. Civil war followed, with Egypt supporting the republicans and Saudi Arabia and Jordan backing the royalists; it ended in 1970 with a republic in place. The southern portion bordering on the Gulf of Aden was penetrated in the 19th cent. by the British, who conquered Aden in 1839 and between 1886 and 1914 signed a number of protectorate treaties with local rulers. Aden was made a crown colony in 1935 and the area to its east became the Aden Protectorate in 1937. In the 1960s, nationalist groups demanding independence began a terrorist campaign against the British, and independence was granted to Southern Yemen in 1967. The National Liberation Front gained control of the government and established a Marxist regime in 1971. Unity agreements between the two Yemens in 1971 and 1981 were not implemented because of recurrent warfare, but a merger negotiated in 1989 resulted in formal unification in 1990.

Geography of Yemen Yemen is situated south-west of Asia, and south of the Arabian Peninsula. To the east, the territory includes deserts of the Arabian Empty Quarter. To the west and north, the levels gradually rise above sea level by a series of mountainous highlands, which extend till Aseer region. The height on the northern cliffy portion may reach 1500 meters but is lower in the eastern regions of the country where it is only 1000 meters in Sayhout region, and 200 meters near the Sanaqeer bay. In spite of these challenges, 1998 saw NIDs or sub-national immunization days (SNIDs) reaching over 450 million children in 97 countries. YEMEN MOCHA One of the world's oldest, most famous coffees comes from Yemen. The coffee is Yemen Mocha, long and justly considered to be one of the world's greatest, uniquely delicious coffees. Once the subject of myth, Mocha coffee has become the object of misunderstanding and misrepresentation. Mocha coffee takes its name from the Yemeni port city called Mocha. Until just over one hundred years ago, it was a small port in Yemen on the Red Sea. Some four centuries ago small quantities of this coffee with a very fine flavor, grown on the hillsides surrounding the town, were exported through this port. It was the first coffee enjoyed by Europeans. Soon after, all imports from Arabia were classified as Mochas. Mocha Sanani and Mocha Mattari make up about 35% of the annual crop and are regarded as the finest of the Yemens. The tiny Yemen crop is now shipped through the ports of Aden and Hodeida. Coffee production has become less important to Yemen in recent years. Production is relatively small and only a fraction of that is exported to other countries. Yemen Mocha coffee is cultivated and processed today much as it has been for centuries. Seedlings, grown in nurseries, are transplanted to terraced farms (from 3,000 fee to 7,000 feet), which have been carved out of the steep hillsides. Lack of rain necessitates the maintenance of irrigation systems designed to provide the trees with controlled constant moisture. The relative dryness of the soil and air results in the production of a bean that is small and extremely hard. All of Yemen's tiny crop is processed by the dry method, and much of it, in fact, is permitted to dry on the tree before picking and hulling. Again, it is the dry hot air that permits this unusual, but in this case, advantageous technique. Yemen Mocha is packed in special plaited straw packages known as "mats" rather than the bags now used universally.
