Adult rural women in Yemen will be taught literacy skills through the writing and documenting of their own poetry and that of other women in their community. A cultural resource that is valued locally and nationally will be utilized to teach rural women a potentially empowering skill that is not currently perceived by them as relevant to their lives. Once part of the ancient Sabaean kingdom (fl. c.750 B.C.–115 B.C.), Yemen was later ruled by the Himyarites, Romans, Ethiopians, and Persians. It was conquered by Muslim Arabs in the 7th cent. A.D., and in the 16th cent. it became part of the Ottoman Empire. The northwestern portion bordering on the Red Sea was established in 1918 as an independent kingdom (known as Yemen or Northern Yemen) ruled by the Rassite dynasty, imams of the Zaidi Shiite sect of Islam. In 1962 an army coup led to the proclamation of a republic. Civil war followed, with Egypt supporting the republicans and Saudi Arabia and Jordan backing the royalists; it ended in 1970 with a republic in place.
The southern portion bordering on the Gulf of Aden was penetrated in the 19th cent. by the British, who conquered Aden in 1839 and between 1886 and 1914 signed a number of protectorate treaties with local rulers. Aden was made a crown colony in 1935 and the area to its east became the Aden Protectorate in 1937.
In the 1960s, nationalist groups demanding independence began a terrorist campaign against the British, and independence was granted to Southern Yemen in 1967. The National Liberation Front gained control of the government and established a Marxist regime in 1971. Unity agreements between the two Yemens in 1971 and 1981 were not implemented because of recurrent warfare, but a merger negotiated in 1989 resulted in formal unification in 1990.

UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music of the World YEMEN SONGS FROM HADRAMAWT Hadramawt has always been the centre of culture for Yemen and the Arab world, with poetry being the most important expression of its cultural life. It is nearly always meant to be sung, and it is highly likely that the ancient monodic songs of the pre-Islamic period have been preserved in this valley. This record explores the various dimensions of the dân ("humming" or "melody without words") also used to designate a poetic genre in dialect, employing particular metres. People have been setting up shacks in the area known as Yemen for more than 3000 years. Ancient kingdoms earned their cash by selling scented tree resins known as myrrh and frankincense to the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Various states rose and fell along the trade routes; mightiest among them was Saba, which hung around for 14 centuries from 1000BC, and based its huge agricultural wealth around the famous dam of Ma'rib. When, in the 1st century AD, the Greeks and Romans discovered they could travel to and from India by boat, Yemen's ports made a killing, eclipsing the towns which had grown up along land trade routes. In 395 the Holy Roman Emperor Theodisius made Christianity the new state religion, effectively putting an end to the demand for frankincense and sending the Sabean kingdom into an irreversable decline. By 575 the Persians had waltzed in and were lords of all they surveyed. In the 7th century the Persian governor of Yemen converted to Islam - like good subjects, the rest of the population soon followed, and by mid-century the Yemenis had knocked up a mosque or three. As the center of Islamic power moved from the Arabian Peninsula to the Persian Gulf, Yemen was left more or less to its own devices, and a number of short-lived dynastic kingdoms sprang up. The Zaydi dynasty, a strict Islamic state founded in 897 in the north of the country, survived until Yemen's 1962 revolution. The Kathirids, who took power in the south in the 15th century, lasted until 1967.

Amal Bhalid al-Ariqi

In Yemen, because of its Islamic tradition, marriage is considered to be one of the most important actions in life. It’s how humanity is continued on Earth.
There many customs and habits in Yemeni weddings, which vary depending on the village. Some parties are large. Others are small.
There are also different ways marriages are arranged.
The first way has the groom’s mother chooses a girl for him.
The second way has the man chooses a girl and ask his mother to engage him with that girl. During the visit to the girls house, the groom’s mother then expresses the desire saying “We would like to have your daughter to be a wife for my son.”
The girl’s mother asks for a week or more to think about it. It is considered shameful if the girl’s family says yes immediately.
A third way has the bride’s family agree on a meeting with the groom’s father and relatives with the bride’s father and relatives. They meet to discuss and agree on a sum of money to be paid to bride’s father.

"OUR HISTORY AND CULTURE ARE DEEPLY-ROOTED IN DEMOCRACY"
Interview with H.E. President Ali Abdulla Saleh of the Republic of Yemen MEI:
"When we open wide the door for democracy, it serves as a mirror through which we see ourselves and our mistakes." President Saleh with the head of the U.S. delegation to the Conference of Newly Emerging Democracies Forum, held in Saana in June 1999. Saleh: MEI: Saleh: This minority does not understand the correct concept of democracy and it has no influence. It does not even understand the meaning of opposition or its role. It complicates matters and makes false claims, but has no popular foundation because it functions only as a noisy phenomenon. However, the national and mature opposition works with us to develop the democratic process and build the nation. The presence of an opposition is a strengthening factor of democracy, and we welcome it and encourage it as it plays an important and effective role in building our society.
