Deploying an XML Web service involves copying the .asmx file and any assemblies used by the XML Web service not shipping as a part of the Microsoft .NET Framework into a virtual directory on a Web server. For information on how to deploy an XML Web service, see Deploying XML Web Services XML Web services are made available to users using a discovery mechanism that usually takes the form of a discovery (or .disco) file. Users can browse to a specific discovery file or to the root of the Web server to locate discovery files. From these files they can determine what services are available to them. Publishing and Deploying XML Web Services
Deploying an XML Web service created using ATL Server is similar to deploying any other ATL Server application. For deployment during the development process, you can use the Web Deployment Property Page to have your files copied and DLLs automatically registered with Internet Information Services (IIS) on the local machine when your project is built. For general deployment, you should follow the advice in Redistributing a Native C++ Application and Deploying ATL Server Applications Once an XML Web service has been deployed and occasionally before it has been deployed, client applications need to become aware of its existence and the capabilities it offers. This is usually accomplished by providing them with the WSDL description of the XML Web service. You can expose the WSDL description of your XML Web service in a number of ways:
  • Provide the client with a URL from which to obtain the WSDL description directly.

Is XML changing the future of Web publishing?
How XML is becoming the new standard for building and managing content
Summary
XML appeared several years ago as an upcoming standard and partial replacement to HTML. Since then there's been a lot of talk, but no one has really specified how Webmasters can use it to their advantage on an everyday basis. This month, Allen walks you through the development of XML and its various Web implementations, and gives you a preview of what you can expect to see over the next year. (2,200 words) WEBMASTER By R. Allen Wyke n 1997 the World Wide Web Consortium (3WC) proposed a new standard the XML specification. This specification, like its HTML sister, was created as a subset of the SGML language. Unlike HTML, the primary focus of which is formatting text data and linking external objects, XML allows you to write markup language tags that better define the data with which you work. Over the last three months, XML has begun taking root, just as its inventors predicted. Financial institutions are now creating languages based on it that define the data they send back and forth; ecommerce vendors are using it for transactions; and reporting tools are using it to import data for ad hoc queries. You shouldn't count on XML to save the world but it can help you describe, consolidate, and validate your data, and basically make your job a whole lot easier. If you have to process Web logs so that your managers can determine their traffic numbers, peak hours, and the type of browsers used to access the site, XML may be your solution especially if these aren't the only numbers your managers have to analyze.

Nancy Weil, IDG News Service XML is central to the future of Web publishing, executives from major vendors in that market said during speeches at the Seybold Seminars Publishing 2000 conference, where companies are pledging broader product support for XML in future releases. XML is a specification from the World Wide Web Consortium that allows Web authors to define custom tags and attributes, enabling XML documents to include metadata, or information about document content. Many vendors, Web designers and programmers point to XML as a superior method of exchanging data over the Internet because its use does not require standardized interfaces or specific programming tools. Such an agnostic language ultimately could lead to a drop in the cost of Web publishing by 30% to 50% and a significant reduction in the time it takes to produce sites, according to Tim Gill, chairman and chief technical officer of Quark and one of the speakers during a special keynote presentation this week. XML further gives the Web an advantage over traditional print, he suggested.

But while HTML only describes how to display a document, XML describes the content. The XML variable data output is then formatted and dynamically merged with the templates by the RT5000 Dynamic Document Formatter . This creates output in a range of languages that cover all commonly used printing platforms: Metacode (e.g. Xerox line printers), PostScript (e.g. Xerox DocuPrint/Tech/Color, IBM, Oce) or PCL (e.g. Hewlett-Packard and compatibles). Output is sent straight to the printer or RT5000 spooler or directed via the RT5000 TCP/IP document router, for printing at full production speeds. The RedTitan Advantage

MURKA
makes apache, xml, xsl and html work together What does "MURKA" mean?
Murka in russian is a typical name for a female cat so it should work fine with Tomcat. It's also a famous russian/jewish song about... well not quite a cat What does it do?
Murka creates a convenient apache, xml, xsl based web publishing environment How does it work?
Murka is an apache module (mod_murka). It intercepts an http request at a very early stage of apache request processing and if the requested file has .html or .jsp type performs the following steps:
1. Checks if file exists. If it exists returns control to standard apache request processing.
2. If the file does not exist looks for xml file in the same directory and with the same name (but with .xml extension). For example if the request file had a name sample.html the xml file name would be sample.xml.
3. Processes the xml file to find the location of the corresponding xsl stylesheet.
4. Calls one of the XSLT engines (Xalan or Sablotron) with found xml and xsl files as parameters to produce an html file.
5. Saves html file at the requested location (sample.html in the sample case).

IBM and Adobe Showcase New Web Publishing Technology
Browser Component Technology Leverages XML and Java for Viewing Visually-Rich Content
Chicago, IL. November 16, 1998. IBM and Adobe Systems Incorporated showcased today, at XML '98 , a jointly developed XML and Java based browser component technology. The new technology will enable users to easily access visually-rich, business-critical information and view it on a range of clients from hand-held devices to desktop computers. This technology demonstration offers a new vision for a wide variety of potential applications, such as adding functionality to existing data, as well as use in e-business solutions. For example, as consumers flock to the Web, it will be critical to give them the ability to easily access, view, and print the high-quality content that represents their favorite products and services. The technology is based on open standards, XML, Java, and the proposed graphics standard, Precision Graphics Markup Language (PGML). For the first time, XML has been integrated into a web publishing technology that enables a wide range of data exchange. XML is designed to make online information "smarter" that is, easier to find, categorize, and customize via tags that identify certain information within a document. For example, XML can take "1992" from a database and determine whether it's a year, a date, or an SKU (stock number in the retail industry). PGML, based on XML, is a 2D-graphics language that provides precise control of layout, fonts, color, and is completely scaleable. PGML is based on the same rich imaging model as Adobe PostScript and PDF.

Web Publishing with XML Part I: Defining the definitions Wes Biggs
Online media conferences are rife with talk of XML . Industry pundits proclaim how well it slices, dices and tenderizes your cherished Web sites. The term adorns headlines in all the weekly rags on the boss's desk, but no one can figure out how to translate the gloss into something of substance for your online presence. It seems to be everything to everyone but what is it? In this series, we'll take a look at some practical applications of XML-based technologies that have the potential, if executed correctly, to simplify the process of bringing content online. We'll put some meat on the fairy tale of hype surrounding the buzzword and explore what kinds of problems XML can and can't solve for web-savvy publications. Like most tales, this one needs exposition before the adventure begins. XML is more accurately described as a set of building blocks rather than a tool. To understand its applications and come up with your own it's worth taking a close-up look at the details. So, bear with me as we take a whirlwind tour of the nuts and bolts of XML. THE BASICS If you've worked with Web technologies at all, you probably have a decent conception of HTML, the HyperText Markup Language. HTML is the standard document language spoken by Web browsers. It's called 'markup' because, just as a proofreader marks up a story, a Web editor sprinkles additional clues amid the plain text of a web page in an attempt to specify the way the browser software should display the information. XML, which stands for eXtensible Markup Language (because, let's face it, 'EML' is just not as cool), retains the same basic structure. The markup, in both HTML and XML, consists of structured tags, distinguished from the actual text of a document by the judicious use of angle brackets (less-than and greater-than signs, for the mathematically inclined).
