READING, WRITING, AND RESEARCHING FOR HISTORY: A GUIDE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
Introduction
The assignment of preparing a research paper for a college-level history course is an important one which should not be neglected. In no other endeavor are so many history-related skills required of students. Just think of the steps required: First, students must find a historical problem worth addressing. This is done most often by reading and comparing secondary history sources, such as monographs and journal articles. Simply finding relevant secondary materials requires its own particular set of skills in using the library: searching catalogs, accessing on-line databases, using interlibrary loan, and even knowing how to pose questions to reference librarians. Reading these sources, determining their arguments, and putting them in conversation with each other constitute another broad set of skills which are enormously difficult to master. Second, having developed a historical problem, students must find a set of primary historical sources which can actually address the question they have formulated. Once again, this is no easy task. It requires another array of skills in using the library. Students must know how to message the on-line library catalog, and perhaps even (gasp!) use the card catalog. They must be willing to explore the stacks, learn to use special collections, travel off-campus to new libraries, or interview informants. This kind of primary source research demands a diligence and persistence rare in these days of easy Internet access.

Literature Review Samplehistorical research
"Legal Rhetoric Books in England, 1600-1700" Lisa A. Perry
In this section I provide the scope and context of the research. The first paragraph provides a very brief restatement of the problem. The second paragraph presents part one of my thesis: " this account offers an overly simple picture of rhetorical education for the years between 1600 and the English Civil War and a rather misleading paradigm for understanding the continuation of rhetorical instruction for the remainder of the century after the War". I then provide a preview of the review of literature. Previous Studies
As mentioned above, much of the previous research in both histories of rhetoric and histories of law accounts for the years 1550 to 1640 but has little or nothing to say about the period after the Civil War. The unquestioned standard view developed in this research is that the sources of rhetoric available for the renaissance English common lawyer for the years between 1550 and 1640 are the Inns of Court, the universities, and rhetoric books. For the unexplored period after 1640, infrequent investigations rely on extensions of earlier conclusions.
In this section I begin with the first topic in the review, that of the Inns of Court.

WRITING TO LEARN HISTORY IN THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES.
Project Director: Matthew Downey, University of California at Berkeley.
Downey's project examined how writing can facilitate the development of children's historical understanding. The project was especially concerned with how children use writing to acquire historical knowledge, organize historical information, and develop historical thinking. The project studied a cross-sectional sample of diverse students, including recent immigrants from Central America and Asia, in the third to fifth grades. Students used a diverse collection of historical materials and a curriculum that included different kinds of writing (such as personal narratives, biography, historical fiction, and expository writing). The project suggested ways of using writing to teach history in the elementary grades, and provided further insight into how writing can help students to learn an academic subject and develop abilities to think critically about what they learn.

Mark Twain Fiction is a lie, a mutual deception between author and reader, but it should be based on solid reality. If the details don't ring true, the reader becomes aware of the lie and often loses interest in the book. Shallow research also leads to books with one-dimensional settings and generic descriptions. Flat, like a painted theater setting.
Writer's Reference Books
You can build a decent personal reference library on the cheap with used books. As well as used book dealers, visit thrift stores, garage sales, and second hand shops. The rattier the neighborhood, the better the prices. With persistence and a bit more expense, you can have an excellent personal library. Let the local book dealers know you aren't concerned about bindings and blemishes as long as the pages are intact. Let your relatives know that you are collecting books. They might not have first edition Hemingway novels, but Uncle Charlie's old medical books would be nice.

As Latin Americans approach the end of the century, democracy has finally won the battle with authoritarian government. While Mexico has had the greatest success with sustaining a democracy, its foundation dating from the 1930s, Venezuela, too, since 1958, has demonstrated its capacity to support the give and take of a competitive system. Even Argentina and Chile, after suffering through the violence and repression of military dictatorship, have returned to the democratic fold. We will examine the historical foundation of Hispanic democracy in primarily Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela, and we examine the posture of the United States vis-a-vis these countries. This course is not a lecture course. It requires students to read extensively and to participate in discussions. It also requires a research paper of 12 to 15 pages. Permission of the department is required. Note: The above picture originally appeared in The Washington Post Bibliography Research Agenda Reserve List Schedule ... Writing Guide

Writing a High School Paper On the Triangle Fire Before You Start
A research paper is based on primary sources , that is, on original documents . If you have never written a research paper before, you need to understand the difference between primary sources and secondary sources. Primary sources are sources created during an event or about an event by the people who experienced it . Primary sources can be letters, contemporary newspaper accounts, or photographs. They can also be oral histories, memoirs, or autobiographies, later recollections of the time by someone who was there. Secondary sources are books or articles written about an event or aspects of a past event, using primary sources . Secondary sources interpret original documents and are often historical narratives, that give you background information about the topic you want to research. Before starting a research project on the Triangle Fire, read an account of the event, such as Leon Stein's book The Triangle Fire and relevant documents from his Out of the Sweatshop . The latter book is out of print but the local library might have it or be able to obtain it through interlibrary loan. Parts of both books are available by following the links on this site. Stein's book on the fire is a secondary source, one that he wrote about the fire using primary sources. His book
