Course Outline
The course aims to encourage students to write for children. The reading age covered will be roughly 4 to 13 and will include picture books, easy-readers and novels which will be studied in turn. Techniques of writing will be examined and exercises set in class to help students develop their understanding of character, place, conflict, dialogue, viewpoint etc. as applied to writing for children. Students will read and give short talks on children's books of their choice in order to develop an awareness of children's literature and share it with the class. An important aspect of the course will be students' own writing. Students will be encouraged to read their work in a supportive (but not uncritical) atmosphere.

S UOMEN NUORISOKIRJAILIJAT RY on perustettu 8. lokakuuta 1946.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FROM BEGINNING WRITERS How do I get started?

Read stacks of children's books in the genre you are interested in. Immerse yourself. Read current children's books as well as the classics. Read books aloud to kids if possible to see how they react. What makes them laugh? What keeps them on the edge of their seats? What bores them? Analyze children's books as you read them. What makes them work? Or, if they don't work, why not? What could the author have done better?
Join SCBWI (the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.) Read their newsletters, attend their conferences, and join a children's writers critique group. If there isn't a group in your area, call up SCBWI members who live near you and start a new children's writers group.
Write. A lot. Write every day. The more you write, the more your ideas will flow, and the better your writing will get.

Older writers constantly and randomly switch between thinking about plot ideas, good words to use, improving sentences and punctuation, etc. as they write a story. Harry, the writing wizard can show you how to write a good story. He will remind you of all the things you need to think about. Children tend to concentrate on developing a chain of events. They don't usually juggle other thoughts in story writing, such as thinking of better words because they find it hard to switch their thinking. He can only help you write a good story if you read his suggestions and do what he says! Click on Harry, or here, to start writing a pirate story. With Harry, the story writing wizard, you can explain to your child how to juggle thinking about different words to use, sentence constructions, story structure, descriptions, characters and plot ideas as they write.

Currently I teach winter semesters in the Vermont College MFA in Writing for Children program in Montpelier, VT. It is a "low residency" post-graduate program, meaning we meet for ten days on campus at the beginning of the semester, then each faculty member works with four or five students through monthly mailed packets during the term. Every other year, I teach the spring quarter of the University of Washington-ext.'s three-quarter certificate in Writing for Children.
