You are visitor # since this web page opened on February 8th, 1996. Hello! My name is Jody Blosser. I'm a freelance writer of children's literature. I hope this web site will bring children's writers of all abilities together to inspire and help each other learn the art of writing for children. But first, a little background about me. I am the mother of three young children. I love being around and spending time with children. I ran a daycare in my home for over nine years, but now I self-publish a resource guide for parents titled Kids 'n Stuff. In my spare time, I volunteer at the local elementary school (This is a great way to keep in touch with today's kids, their dialog, and likes and dislikes!). To date, I have one book published Everybody Wins! Non-Competitive Party Games and Activities for Children
and a second one out with an agent. I also have been published in a couple of magazines and in the 1997 Children's Book Market
N ew!

W riting is a solitary occupation. Yet most of us are social beings in need of affirmation and moral support. This is why many writers find it helpful to belong to discussion groups, critique groups, bulletin boards, and listservs that include others who share their writing interests. The real and virtual writing communities to which I belong give me circles of friends and colleagues with whom I can share the elation of contracts, publications, and other good writing news, as well as the disappointments that sometimes rear their ugly heads. I can ask questions, gain information, and yes, share gripes. And I can find out what's going on in the children's writing world. Books to watch for in 2003 , from writers and illustrators in real and virtual writing communities I'm proud to claim as mine Frequently Asked Questions about writing for the children's market Elisa Carbone's Writing Workshop , specially for writers who want to offer writing workshops to large school audiences Who's in your writing community?

TIPS ON WRITING FOR CHILDREN
by Jill Morris
  • There is a children's writer in all of us. We have all been children and we understand children's joys and concerns.
  • It is hard work. Don't be misled by the simplicity and brevity of much of the best children's literature. Simplicity is hard to achieve. It is often the result of dozens of drafts. Brevity means the author has got rid of thousands of words to achieve the kernel of a story which will entice, intrigue and excite children.
  • Don't be distracted by the rubbish which is published for children. Writers often make this mistake, which I call the 'I can do better than that' syndrome. You have to do the best you can do. This is an extremely competitive and critical field. For children - only the best will do!
  • Don't try to write for all ages at once. Once you have an idea, narrow your focus and decide which age group it will be best for. Make the age group as narrow as you dare. Magically, if a piece of writing works for one age group (say 8-9 year-olds), it may work for everyone.

... Site Map An interview with acclaimed children's book author Jane Yolen, of Hatfield, Massachusetts, who has written more than 200 books, including "The Devil's Arithmetic" "The Put Dragon trilogy, "Sleeping Ugly" "The Emperor and the Kite" and "Briar Rose." She has also won a Caldecott Honor. She believes what makes a children's story last for generations is "being truthful at the deepest level, touching the mind and heart." How did you first become interested in writing children's books? I was a poet and journalist and by accident fell into the field. When you first began writing children's books, what difficulties and challenges did you face? It took about a year to find a publisher for my first book, but I never looked back. Where do you get your ideas and inspiration for your books? Everywhere. How do you go about creating characters that will appeal to children? Why do you think you are able to do this? I find my inner child, the child I used to be, and write stories for that child.

FAQ About Writing for Children
Q. How did you decide to become a writer?
Q. Do you write every day?
Q. I have an idea for a story. What do I do next?

When you think your words are just about perfect, put the manuscript away for a while. Take it back out, cut and add, and now you might be about ready to send it out.
Q. Do I need to send pictures with my story?
Q. Where should I send my manuscript? Do I need to send a query letter?
Q. Do I need an agent?
Q. Do you have any hobbies?

A. I love my job, so writing, reading, and daydreaming take up a good part of my day and evening. In the summer I like to swim, and in the winter I cross-country ski with my dogs for company. My daughter and I like to hang out and laugh at our cat all year long.

To: UI Special Collections The Ghost of Ladora MILDRED WIRT BENSON From Books at Iowa 19 (November, 1973)
"Fog" was the bob-tailed title of the short story printed in Lutheran Young Folks in 1935. My eye fell upon the yellowing issue as it tumbled from an old filing cabinet. The story bore my name, Mildred Augustine Wirt, a Ladora, Iowa, graduate of The University of Iowa School of journalism. Certainly I had written that story and nearly one hundred others at a previous or slightly later date, yet blessedly all memory of this tale of aviation's early day had erased from my mind. Scanning it, I winced at a few aeronautical inaccuracies; yet it did seem to carry suspense and imagination, particularly the latter, for in the 1930's my nearest approach to flight had been a brief ride taken as a child with a Cedar Rapids pilot who barnstormed Iowa towns in an old jenny. Reviewing "Fog," it dawned upon me that my style as a writer of action books for young people already had been set, a style which possibly evolved from extensive childhood reading of St. Nicholas Magazine
