Legal Clinics Externships Lawyering Skills At Quinnipiac University School of Law, we have long understood that itis our role to provide students with training in the skills and values that make for a professionally competent, socially responsible and compassionate lawyer. We seek to do so, in the first year, through a rigorously structured and disciplined legal skills program that concentrates on the skills of research, analysis, argument and writing. We employ full-time professionals who make legal skills training a life-long career. In the second and third years, we build upon the first year with dozens of simulation courses that emphasize other skills as investigation, communication, counseling, negotiation, problem-solving and dispute resolution, as well as organization and management. We offer many opportunities to gain practical experience with our clinics and externships programs. The School of law is committed to making available to each student at least one opportunity for a live-client experience. Again, at the School of Law, we are committed to training our law students in the core values of the legal profession: honesty, justice, fairness, competence, self-development, and service.

It happens often enough. A second-grader writhes in agony because of a stomach ache. A fourth-grader droops with weakness because of a bout of diarrhea. Yet another student is tormented by a nasty asthma attack. What do school officials do when faced with such situations? Often, they send the sick child home—with no guarantee of whether the student will ever make the trip to see a healthcare professional. But with an increasing number of full-service healthcare clinics being established on school grounds, teachers and administrators now have a better alternative. These centers offer timely treatment, keeping children from missing school because of minor ailments. They also ensure that the children’s healthcare needs are taken care of before they become full-blown illnesses. "If the clinic was not there, the school would call 911 and the kid would go to the emergency room," said Cecilia Mendoza, LVN, who works at a school-based health clinic in the Elizabeth Learning Center in Cudahy, Texas. "This brings up a large bill for the parents. A lot of kids need to have accessible health care as their parents are afraid to go to the hospital because of the bills."

As community use of schools continues to rise, educators are finding new ways to handle the demand. by C. L. Taylor C. L. Taylor is a writer based in Alexandria, Virginia, and was a contributing writer for Community Use of Schools: Facility Design Perspectives (Fanning/ Howey Associates, 1995). W hen schoolchildren in Atlantic City, New Jersey, enroll in the district's mandatory swimming program, they have to make one stop on the way to the nearest pool: the dental clinic. In a unique partnership with the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry, student dentists provide free screenings and checkups in exchange for use of the public dental clinics located in two of the schools. City residents can use the schools' swimming pools, weight rooms, dance and aerobics rooms, auditoriums, media centers, gyms, and classrooms on a regular basis. The schools also have welcomed Head Start programs for preschoolers, after-school programs and homework clubs, adult education classes, and activities for senior citizens. In short, each of Atlantic City's schools has become integral to the vitality of its urban neighborhood. "Our commitment to community service dates back to 1925," says Marven Hill, president of the Atlantic City Board of Education. "Our New Jersey Avenue School had a dental program and a full-functioning cafeteria, which was unusual for that time. The school also had a `keep well station for babies that was staffed with visiting nurses. The community has always used that school, and others since, for recreation, continuing education, and health care."

What Iowa Is All About
The University of Iowa is a major national research university with a solid liberal arts and sciences foundation. It ties its pursuit of advances in scholarship, technology, and creative endeavors to its mission of teaching, research, and service in an increasingly global environment. Established in 1847 as Iowa's first public institution of higher education, the University has won international recognition for its wealth of achievements in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Iowa was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women on an equal basis and the first institution of higher education in the nation to accept creative work in theater, writing, music, and art as theses for advanced degrees. It established the first law school and the first educational radio station west of the Mississippi, broadcast the world's first educational television programs, and developed and continues to hold preeminence in educational testing. The University's research programs in genetics, hydraulics, and speech and hearing also are world renowned, as are its innovations in agricultural medicine, biocatalysis, biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, and pharmacology education. Its graduate programs in audiology, printmaking, creative writing, speech-language pathology, and nursing service administration are first-ranked. A pioneer in space research, Iowa has designed and built research instruments for more than 50 successful U.S. satellites and space probes. It also is the location for the most technically advanced driving simulator in the world.

Twelve circumstantial descriptions of working writing centers provide concrete details about how centers work. Each description follows the same outline: history, physical description (including a floor plan), chronology of a typical day, clientele, selection and training of tutors, types of services (including tutoring, testing, computers, WAC, etc.), administration (management, staff, budget), evaluation, research, and plans for the future. Centers described are at Purdue, Medgar Evers College, University of Toledo, Lehigh University, University of Southern California, Harvard, University of Puget Sound, Johnson County Community College, University of Washington, Utah State, and Colorado State. A concluding essay by Kinkead examines themes raised in the text. Includes bibliography and index. CE

The course introduces students to the basics of the court system, how to read cases, locating and selecting precedent, and how to construct legal arguments. Our approach is a practical one: our aim is to teach students the skills they need to practice law at a high level. To that end, the Legal Research and Writing Program at Boalt has undergone major changes in the past few years. The program has been redesigned to provide more challenging assignments, more written feedback and the opportunity for hands-on research instruction. Most of the writing instruction takes place in students' "small section" modules, by full-time Legal Research and Writing faculty, all of whom have experience teaching and practicing law. In addition, two upper-level law student TAs are assigned to each module of first-year students to assist in providing individual feedback.
