Doing Something Important by Janie Blankenship With 6,000 regularly scheduled volunteers, VFW is key to VA’s Voluntary Service’s success. When Harry Kelley was forced to retire from truck driving two years ago due to back injuries, he knew he had to find something to busy himself. That’s when he signed on as a VFW volunteer with the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS). “After I retired, I was just sitting around looking at four walls,” the Vietnam veteran and member of Post 534 in Joplin, Mo., said. “That’s why I decided to do something for someone else.” Once or twice a week, Kelley drives veterans four hours to Kansas City’s VA Medical Center for treatment. And with a career record of 2.5 million miles accident-free, Kelley is the kind of guy you want driving you hundreds of miles in one day for an appointment. On average, Kelley has three passengers per trip. While they are taking care of business at the hospital, he wanders around the waiting room visiting with other veterans. “My father was a POW in WWII, so I like to visit with other WWII vets,” said Kelley, who served off the Vietnam coast on the USS Coral Sea.

LANGUAGE DISORDERS PROGRAM
Childhood Language Disorders Program , now operating in each of our 37 Orients within the United States and Puerto Rico, serves, without regard to race, color, or creed, thousands of children who are afflicted with conditions that severely hamper their speaking, reading, and writing abilities. The afflicted child, if diagnosed early and given appropriate specialized help, can become a fully functioning and productive citizen. If not assisted, the child may become instead a heartbreaking liability for the family and for the state. Grand Commander Kleinknecht has succeeded in making the Scottish Rite Foundation, Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A., Inc., much more active in generating funds for the clinics, centers, and programs. Nothing succeeds like success! From 1985 to 1998, the number of facilities and programs has grown to 133, with more clinics being established each year. Also, many of the existing clinics have continued to expand their services. From its inception, the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Program has helped tens of thousands of children with aphasia and/or dyslexia and a wide variety of other related language and learning disorders. The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, a 1600 bed teaching facility, is the second largest medical center in the nation and by far the largest medical center in the Southeast. The medical center has taken the leadership in trauma treatment and has been designated as a Level I Trauma Center; accordingly, the most life-threatening and traumatic medical cases are sent to UM/Jackson Medical Center for quality care. In a recent survey performed by 300 medical authorities and physicians, the UM/JMH Medical Center was ranked 16th among the 25 best in the nation, underscoring the standard of excellence permeating the entire medical center. This excellence was reaffirmed in The Best Hospitals in America, by Linda Sunshine and John W. Wright, published by Henry Holt and Company, Inc. in 1987. The book's introduction noted, "of the 64 institutions profiled... are those where excellent nursing staffs are given a meaningful role in their patients care and treatment, where state-of-the-art medical technologies are employed, in almost every instance, the most patients with difficult orthopaedic and spinal injury research programs reside".

Muriel Harris
For the Third Annual Meeting of the Writing Centers Association, which convened in May 1981, I was asked to offer an over-view of writing centerstheir beginnings, growth, present status, and so on. That in itself is a sign of writing centers having come of age, since some of our young ‘uns are apparently curious about our past. Interestingly enough, that past, those dim, dark beginnings in the primordial ooze, are really relatively recent; for if we've matured, it's been a rapid maturation process. In the "Editor's Notes" to a new book of essays on writing centers, Thorn Hawkins and Phyllis Brooks conclude that it is doubtful that even a dozen writing centers existed at the beginning of the 1970's. Tapping several sources, they estimate that as we entered the 1980's, the number of writing centers nationwide was rapidly approaching 1000. To describe that rapid growth process, I need to delve into some personal history because my case is typical of many. In the mid '7Os, having decided that I was ready to look for a job, I finally found out what everyone else already knew, that there was little or no market for people who had degrees in literary studies. However, like other faculty wives and unemployed Ph.D's across the country, I began to teach composition as a part-time lecturer and quickly experienced the frustration of being unable to accomplish much of anything with a large group. There were murmurings of starting up a writing lab at Purdue which, like other post-secondary institutions around the country, was beginning to find that the literary crisis was not a media invention or a fiction Newsweek made up for a juicy cover story. Something was needed to cure the problem, and a "lab" sounded like a distinct possibility, though no oneat least at Purdueknew exactly what a lab might be.

Larry Berman (401) 729-5600 KENNEDY URGES RESOLUTION TO LABOR WOES AT PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS
WASHINGTON Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI) wrote today to Ronald Winter, executive director of the Providence Community Health Centers, to urge a quick resolution to the labor situation which has resulted in a strike by approximately 90 employees for nearly a month and a disruption in the health care delivery system for low-income residents of the Providence area. The strike by the clerical and medical support workers has caused the closing of five of the seven health centers and clinics throughout Providence, creating a major inconvenience for thousands of patients. "These patients are being forced to travel greater distances to deal with providers who may be unfamiliar with them, and who may not be fluent in their native languages," wrote Kennedy. "This is very distressing to them, as these clinics are often the only providers of primary and urgent care for the community." Kennedy pointed out that the striking employees are mainly minority women who are facing the strain of additional patient loads due to the success of the RIte Care program, as well as additional former Harvard Pilgrim Health Center subscribers, while working for wages ranging from $8 to $12 an hour.

The Writing Centers' Mellon Grant Proposal
  • Abstract Introduction Statement of Objectives Rationale ... Biographies of Program Coordinators
  • Abstract
Because technology can fundamentally change writing and the writing process, we propose a two-year project that integrates faculty development, resources for students, and training for Writing Center staff at all the Claremont Colleges. The focus of the proposal is a series of hands-on faculty workshops that demonstrate how particular technologies can facilitate the use of writing in any course. In addition, the project provides ongoing support as faculty implement technology-based writing in their courses. The project also creates online writing resources for students that include informational and interactive components. Writing Centers participating in the project will offer online consulting services to individuals and groups of students. This integrated, intercollegiate approach will create an environment that takes full advantage of the pedagogical benefits that emerge from the joining of technology and writing.
    Introduction
Technology can fundamentally change the way students and faculty think about writing and the writing process. Sadly, the Claremont Colleges lag far behind other institutions in the integration of technology and writing, both within introductory writing courses and within discipline-specific courses that use writing. At the 1997 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), approximately one-third of the 500 sessions addressed innovative ways to combine technology and writing. None of the Claremont Colleges faculty presented at this national forum. Claremont students and faculty would benefit from a concerted effort to bring writing and technology together. We therefore propose a two-year project that does so through faculty development, resources for students, and training for Writing Center consultants.

Physical fitness is quickly becoming one of our nation's priorities. Supremely conditioned athletes are breaking records that were once considered unattainable. Many people are seeking the personal challenge of competition in local, state, and national athletic events. Others are making fitness a part of their lives by setting aside time during the day to exercise and eat well-balanced meals. Physical fitness is affected by several factors, the most important of which are diet and exercise. With the evolving concept of wellness, there is a greater need for professionals who are trained in both nutrition and exercise science. Kansas State University is proud to be the first Big Twelve university to offer a dual degree in human nutrition and kinesiology. Graduates pursue careers in health programs in hospitals, industries, wellness centers, public and private clinics, YMCAs, YWCAs, fitness camps, athletic clubs, and university training tables.
