world war ii history of the light cruiser USS Santa Fe (CL60), the Lucky Lady.
http://santafe.paintrock.net
During World War II, my father, Frederick P. (Andy) Anderson, was a U.S. Marine stationed aboard the USS Santa Fe (CL-60), a Cleveland Class light cruiser that saw action from the Aleutians, to the Philippines, to Iwo Jima. Especially noteworthy for the Santa Fe was her role in the rescue of the aircraft carrier Franklin and a large portion of her crew. The text of this account of the voyages of the Santa Fe was prepared in 1947 by the Ships Data Section, Office of Public Information, the Navy Department. I have scanned the photos from the U.S.S. Santa Fe Cruise Record; the photo captions are my own. Bill Anderson

    William Davis Rhodes
Veteran of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge Updated April, 2003 A few years ago, I uncovered a small treasure. It was a document that I had longed to find. And when I finally found it, held it in my hands, it was as if a key had turned within a lock. It was my grandfather's Honorable Discharge. William D. Rhodes, born on 17 December 1917, was 25 when he joined up. Three years later, he was much older. He had seen the bloody Normandy beach code-named Omaha. He had stared into the mists of a snowy forest named Ardennes, a frozen hell where over a million men fought the largest land battle of the war. He had mysteriously "acquired" a motorcycle and cruised the frozen lanes of Belgium, meeting up with a Belgian lass known only as Collette. He had seen a Nazi death camp. And, somewhere along the way, someone had handed him a Silver Star. He was a member of the 3rd Armored Division, the Spearhead that drove into the heart of Nazi Germany. The unstoppable 3rd was the first allied unit to enter Germany, the first to capture a German town (Roetgen), and the first to breach the infamous Siegfried Line. And, when the bloody end finally came, it was the last unit of the First Army's VII Corps to cease firing.

The objective of this project is to build understanding between generations, require students to master and produce interactive multimedia content and ensure that the results of that work are available to the general public and other teachers and students for replication. As the program progresses, teachers and students will be adding to the oral history legacies as this project grows. Please note that our site will not be available on Monday nights from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM EST. This time is needed for product maintenance. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve our site.

"When the Screaming Eagles strike, everybody will know." ~ Col. Michael Linnington, CO, 3rd Brigade, 101st Abn. Div. 27 March 03, somewhere in Iraq Welcome! This is the home page for the 101st Timeline Living History Society (or 101st TLHS). We are a "living history" association, dedicated to honoring the men who have fought and died while serving with the legendary"Screaming Eagles." Our group is different than most reenactment groups in that we do not portray any one unit from any one time period. Our members can choose an impression from any unit, and any time period from the long history of the 101st Airborne, be it paratrooper or glider infantry in World War Two, airmobile in Vietnam, or air assault in Desert Storm. We are strictly a living history organization, we do not participate in battle scenarios as a group. One of our most important missions, however, will be documenting the personal accounts from veterans of the 101st. If you served with the Screaming Eagles and would like to have your story documented, please contact us... by sharing your experience with others you ensure that your sacrifice will not be forgotten and will be better understood. ARMY HOSPITAL SHIPS IN WORLD WAR II
    Introduction
During the unsuccessful British attack on the Spanish Caribbean port of Cartagena in 1741, the sick and wounded troops of the assault force were placed on board what were called, with less truth than charity, naval hospital ships. There, in the shocked words of surgeon's mate Tobias Smollett, "they langusihed in want of every necessary comfort and accommodation." Without adequate care, food, or medical attention, the casualties, as Smollett described them: "...Were pent-up between decks in small vessels where that had not room to sit upright; they wallowed in filth; myriads of maggots were hatched in the putrefaction of their sores, which had no other dressing than that of being washed by themselves in their own allowance of brandy; and nothing was heard but groans, lamentations, and the language of despair, invoking death to deliver them from their miseries."
The so-called hospital ships in the British Fleet, before Cartagena were a far cry from the clean, comfortable, well-equipped and staffed vessels that saw service in the Allied cause during World War II. But the development of hospital ships as we know them was a long time in coming.

World War II Main Article WORLD WAR II, the name commonly given to the global conflict of 1939-1945. It was the greatest and most destructive war in history. Whereas military operations in World War I were conducted primarily on the European continent, World War II included gigantic struggles not only in Europe but in Asia, Africa, and the far-flung islands of the Pacific as well. More than 17 million members of the armed forces of the various belligerents perished during the conflict. Its conduct strained the economic capabilities of the major nations and left many countries on the edge of collapse. The events leading to World War II, its military operations, diplomacy, statistical data, and results, are discussed under the following headings: 1. The War in Brief
    2. Between World Wars

    3. Early Campaigns

    4. Fall of the Low Countries and France
