Second World War
The history, science and engineering of cryptanalysis in World War II created by Tony Sale Between 1939 and 1945, the most advanced and creative forms of mathematical and technological knowledge were combined to master German communications. British cryptanalysts, Alan Turing at the forefront, changed the course of the Second World War and created the foundation for the modern computer. In 1991 the Bletchley Park, the wartime home of Allied code breaking, was saved from destruction by Tony Sale and some colleagues. They transformed it into a museum devoted to the recognition and reconstruction of this crucial aspect of world history, which had remained completely secret until the early 1970s.

An Overview

The Treaty of Versailles (the treaty that officially ended World War I) failed to heal the bitter rifts that formed between the warring nations. It left Germany in dire economic straits and ripe for a dictator who promised to make everything better. Japan was not given that which was promised, angering the nation against the western powers. In a glimmer of hope, the victorious nations formed the League of Nations shortly after war's end. The league was sponsored by United States president Woodrow Wilson, but, ironically, the United States never joined the league. Since the league had no real military force to enforce its rulings, it was completely impotent. In 1931 the Japanese invaded Manchuria. The league passed a resolution, ordering the Japanese to withdraw, but instead they just withdrew from the league and continued on with the brutal occupation.

Cycles of U.S. History - World War Cycle last modified February 21, 2000 The Missionary Generation were the idealists of the World War Cycle. As they approached adulthood, around 1890, the student missionary movement was launched and protests and labor violence was the norm. This cultural bonfire of a spiritual event lasted until just after the turn of the century. Many of our present religious groups trace their roots to those times. The modern women's movement, temperance and the labor movements also began then. A civil generation, the G.I.'s, emerged from those turbulent times to conquer the Great Depression and to fight the greatest war, WWII. These civic events are still fresh in our conscience since many of the participants are still with us. http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/adaccess/wwad-history.html
Brief History of World War Two Advertising Campaigns Even before the United States officially entered what would become the bloodiest war of all time, it had already undertaken the largest, broadest, and most ambitious advertising campaign ever. Charged with the task of selling wartime government programs and war bonds to the American public, the War Advertising Council and the War Finance Committee sought to promote voluntary compliance with bond buying quotas and rationing programs while at the same time contributing to the home-front morale. The work of these organizations produced "the greatest volume of advertising and publicity ever given to any product or agency" in the history of America. Six major campaigns in support of the war effort are outlined below. A Timeline of advertising and military campaigns is also available.

98. Research Topics
A review of ongoing major conflicts around the world at the start of 2000 published by the Center for Defense Information.
http://www.cdi.org/issues/World_at_War/wwar00.html
Research Topics Television CDI Library Press ... Search The World At War January 2000 January 1, 2000 is a "triple" beginning - a new year, a new century, and (popularly) a new millennium. Yet there remains much unfinished business from the last year, the last decade, indeed the entire 20 th century. One statistic reveals just how incomplete the record is. There are still more than three dozen major conflicts (those with over 1,000 casualties, both military and civilian) raging in the world. The increase is most noticeable in Asia, where Indonesia is riven by internal strife and groups of Islamic militants are active against the governments of the Cental Asian republics that emerged after the demise of the Soviet Union. Overall, the increase in major wars worldwide was quite sharp. Four conflicts in 1999 stand out above all others. Russian forces are again deeply mired in Chechnya just as they were in 1996. Promises of crushing the independence-minded republic with minimum Russian casualties seem to be crumbling as the battle for the Chechen capital of Grozny drags on. And the longer the fighting goes, the higher the civilian death toll becomes. In Africa, armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) quieted for a while as the opposing factions regrouped after the August signing of the Lusaka cease-fire. At one point the fighting had drawn in the military forces of eight other African nations: Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Chad, Sudan (all supporting Laurent Kabila), Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi (all supporting rebels). In November the cease-fire was declared "dead" by one of the insurgent groups seeking to overthrow Kabila, and fighting began to escalate again.
