Thank You. Buddhism - The Buddha Golden statue of Gautama, the Buddha, founder of Buddhism. The veneration of the images of the Buddha by bringing food, flower and incense offerings insures the reception of good karma. Buddhism - Theravada Monks Theravada Buddhism is the oldest branch of Buddhism called "the Way of the Elders." Theravada is also seen as the way of the monks. Here we see some Theravada monks receiving offerings from villagers. Monks do not own any material possessions, except for their robes and begging bowl (along with several other rudimentary implements). By receiving food offerings from the people around them, they are physically sustained; in return they share good karma with their generous provider. Buddhism - Wheel of Samsara The Wheel of Samsara is the consummation of Buddhism thought: we are trapped in a cycle of reincarnation, of birth and rebirth, dictated by our desires and which we can only escape through detachment. Through detachment, one ceases to desire and hence to suffer. Escaping the Wheel of Samsara is to be release, to be free from suffering and to achieve Nirvana.

These are my official web pages for "Love Your Neighbors? Discover the real world religions." (ISBN 1-58916-777-5) Apart from brief commentaries, I've selected a few quotes you might enjoy. Page ii of my preface and pages 12-13 of my introductory section will follow. Feel free to connect to some or all of the other sections. Due to the nature of our world, especially after September 11th, friends and relatives have urged me to write this book. Religion is a huge topic covering many diverse beliefs and practices. Neighbors will primarily focus on the five major traditional religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
Beliefs and their foundations need to be examined. ... The most current information containing religious statistics and educated estimates clearly shows diversity among neighbors throughout the world. By including the non-religious, anti-religious, and unaffiliated, the chart on the state of religions seeks to include the entire world population (see below).
An individual and family might be classified in a religion even with a minor affiliation. If a father takes his family to a Roman Catholic mass only on Easter, the whole family might be considered Roman Catholic. Variations of spirituality and religious concern accompany each individual at particular times in life. After the death of a loved one, spirituality and religion often become more significant. In the contemporary world of technology and materialism, distractions often overwhelm and can take priority. Sundays or days of worship might provide spiritual sustenance or might just be a time for socializing and maintaining status quo. Regardless of the circumstances, religion and the spiritual tenets of religion occupy portions of the mind for moments throughout the day for billions of people.

Islam
There are three monotheistic religions in the world, religions that teach that there is only one God: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The term "Islam" means "submission" to the will of God, and the person who submits is called a "Muslim." The founder of Islam is Muhammad, who was born in 570 A.D. At age 40 he claimed to begin receiving revelations from a spirit being he believed was the angel Gabriel. These later were recorded and became the Qur'an, Islam's holy book. There are Six Articles of Faith that all Muslims hold to. The first is that "there is no God but Allah." The second Article of Faith is belief in a hierarchy of angels, of which the archangel Gabriel is the highest. Each Muslim is assigned two angels, one to record his good deeds and the other to record the bad deeds. At the bottom of the angelic hierarchy are the jinn, from which we get the word "genie." They are a Muslim version of demons. The third Article of Faith is belief in 104 holy books, with the Koran as the final revelation. The fourth is belief in the prophets. According to the Qur'an, God has sent a prophet to every nation to preach the message that there is only one God. 124,000 prophets have been sent, most of them unknown but some of them biblical characters, including Jesus. Muhammed, though, is the prophet for all times, the "Seal of the Prophets." The fifth Article of Faith is belief in predestination. All things, both good and evil, are the direct result of the will of Allah. Islam is a very fatalistic religion.
