This Southern Nazarene University course deals with the beliefs and practices of the religions (other than Christianity) of our world. It is similar to those courses sometimes titled Comparative Religions. This course will give students an understanding of religions such as Animism (including Wiccan), Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and others. During the semester, we will utilize not only written materials and lectures by the professor, but also videos and appearances by guest speakers from those religions. Fortunately, for the purposes of this course, we have some great resources in the Oklahoma City area:

"Sociology of the World Religions: Introduction" by Max Weber By 'world religions,' we understand the five religions or religiously determined systems of life-regulation which have known how to gather multitudes of confessors around them. The term is used here in a completely value-neutral sense. The Confucian, Hinduist, Buddhist, Christian, and Islamist religious ethics all belong to the category of world religion. A sixth religion, Judaism, will also be dealt with. It is included because it contains historical preconditions decisive for understanding Christianity and Islamism, and because of its historic and autonomous significance for the development of the modern economic ethic of the Occidenta significance, partly real and partly alleged, which has been discussed several times recently. References to other religions will be made only when they are indispensable for historical connections.

References to other religions will be made only when they are indispensable for historical connections. What is meant by the 'economic ethic' of a religion will become increasingly clear during the course of our presentation. This term does not bring into focus the ethical theories of theological compendia; for however important such compendia may be under certain circumstances, they merely serve as tools of knowledge. The term 'economic ethic' points to the practical impulses for action which are founded in the psychological and pragmatic contexts of religions. The following presentation may be sketchy, but it will make obvious how complicated the structures and how many-sided the conditions of a concrete economic ethic usually are. Furthermore, it will show that externally similar forms of economic organization may agree with very different economic ethics

The official purpose of the Pagan Student Association is: "To provide pagan students and students interested in alternative religions a forum for discussing and learning as well as a social atmosphere." The members of PSA include students from various Pagan paths as well as students of other religions. The onlyrequirement for membership is an open mind. Because of our diverse backgrounds, we form a stronger group since each student brings his or her own unique skills and knowledge to share with the group. Although we do have the pleasure of having speakers from the local Pagan community give presentations and workshops, most of the teaching in PSA is done by the members. PSA holds weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. in Suite FG on the third floor of the Ohio Union. Typical weekly meetings include a wide range of topics from "Coming out of the Broom-closet" discussions, lessons in Gaelic, meditation workshops, and workshops on divination (Tarot cards, Runes, etc.). In addition to these weekly meetings, PSA holds several celebrations to coincide with Pagan holidays. These celebrations include music, dancing, food, story-telling, plays, simple meditations, and just plain fun.

THE WORLD RELIGIONS PAGE RELIGIONS HAVE SHAPED THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE. SELECT FROM THE LINKS BELOW TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ISSUES OF PURE FAITH BUDDHISM CHRISTIANITY CONFUCIANISM HINDU ... TAOIST BUDDHISM Sidhartha Gautama, the Buddha: Sidhartha was born a prince (563 B.C.; Kapilavastu, India) into the Gautama family of the Shakaya clan. He lived a luxurious life and the best education that his father's wealth could provide, but his father also sheltered him from the hardships of life. He married a woman named Yashodhara and they lived in his father's house. Then, during one of his few excursions from the protection of his father's palace, Sidhartha saw three things which opened the harsh realities of life to him. He saw an old man, suffering from the frailties of age. He saw a sick man, suffering from disease. He also saw a dead man, which shocked him greatly. He finally realized that the infirmities of old age, and the pain of sickness and death cause suffering that he had never experienced. This revelation caused him to begin a search for truth that drastically changed his life, and the lives of many around him.. At the age of thirty-five, on the night of the full moon, Sidhartha reached enlightenment and became an "enlightened one"a Buddha (c. 528 B.C.) He had at last discovered the truth he had sought, and he immediately shared it with five ascetics who had practiced near with him.
