Divine Digest
At some stage in life, we ask ourselves this question... What is Religion? Religion can be described in many different ways. If we really concentrate, the answers come from deep within us, such as... What is the purpose of or lives? What is our final destiny?
What is the difference between right and wrong?
What are one's obligations to the other people? To some of us religion is belief in a superhuman power or powers to be obeyed, and worshipped, as the creator or the ruler of the universe. However the more orthodox people in society refer to religion as a specific system of belief, or simple worship, often involving a code of ethics. Priests and other heads of religious orders believe that religion is a the state, or way of life of a person in a monastic order. Even more conservative sects believe that religion is any object that is seriously or zealously pursued. Certain methodistic orders believe that religion is basically an observation of devotion, piety, and discipline, according to their individual customs and rules and regulations. However, basically, everywhere in the world man, to whichever religion he belonged, looked to a prophet - a religious symbol to concentrate upon. The most logical answer would be that religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, practices, and worship that centers on one supreme God or the deity. Religion gives a feeling of security to many people.

In the late 60's after going through a bitter and cynical "anti" organized religion periodfor I had seen far too many examples of religious organizations causing discordI took a Comparative Religion course at the University of Illinois. While the professor mocked organized religion relentlessly, what I discovered surprised me. World Religions I found similar patterns in each of them and found that the same essential Truths were taught in all the world's true religions. That led me to search to see if there really was a religion that put all this together and made sense. I stumbled upon it a few blocks away from my apartment and Life has never been the same sincethankfully. John A . Nesbit About Me "The religion of God and the creed of God hath been revealed and made manifest from the heaven of the will of the king of pre-existence for the sake of union and harmony among the people of the world; make it not a means for disagreement and discord!"

I believe God has always been with Man and has always provided a "teacher" to give us guidance. It is as if we are continually in schoolwhile our first grade teacher may have known as much as the college professor, he/she only gave us the information we were ready for. Likewise, the college professor doesn't deny any of the Truths taught to us by our elementary teachers; he/she brings us new knowledge that we can now comprehend. This is a concept Bahá'is call progressive revelation and is something you must investigate yourself.

Institute For World Religions The Institute for World Religions is an educational and religious center dedicated to the study of the Asian and Western religious and cultural traditions. Located in the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery, the Institute benefits from proximity to an environment that is grounded in traditional Buddhism yet serves contemporary society. The Institute interprets essential aspects of Chinese culture and religions for dialogue with the other major religions of the world. Dedicated to creating a sanctuary where one can engage in conversation about theological principles, religious beliefs and spiritual practices, the Institute encourages the interfaith search for universal values in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect. It aims to challenge the boundaries of our minds and avoid attachment to narrow sectarian differences.
History Of The Institute
In 1976 Cardinal Yu Bin graciously consented to be the Institute's first director. In 1994 the Institute for World Religions moved to the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery. Its proximity to the University of California at Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union, and its location in the San Francisco Bay Area have added a new dimension to the Institute's potential for rich and mutually beneficial academic, religious and cultural interchange.
The Program
The Institute for World Religions offers a wide variety of programs designed to deepen self-cultivation, to enhance basic values, and to foster a genuine sense of mutual understanding among different traditions. The activities range from semester length formal academic classes to lectures, public dialogue, and practice seminars. Since its inception, the Institute for World Religions has sponsored an on-going forum for dialogue and programs that bring leaders of religion and spirituality into conversation with contemporary theorists of science and technology.

    Morals
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me (Galatians 2:20). Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24). Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry (Colossians 3:5). If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!" (which all refer to things destined to perish with the using)in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? (Colossians 2:20-21). Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God (I Peter 2:16).

After six years as a Hindu ascetic, Siddhartha renounced asceticism after discovering that clear-mindfulness , not the pain of ascetic practice, is the key to spiritual understanding. He sought a new kind of awareness characterized by mastery over all emotions – a sharp, clear awareness that is unswayed by self-interest. The term “Buddha” came to refer to one who has relinquished all clinging to concerns related to space and time, thus transcending individualized existence. What is religion? What is a spiritual tradition?

Religion is all or some of the attributes described below. Religion is different for different people and cultures. Some religion is so much a part of the culture of a given people that it is not so much a formal religion, but simply the spiritual aspects of that culture or group - the spiritual traditions which help define it. This is especially true of the indigenous traditions of a geographical area.
