World Religions
Religion, History and Literature
Religion is more than just a belief in a deity. Religion is philosophy and a way of life. It can define who you are, how you view the world around you and how you interact within it. There are as many different types of religion as there are different types of people.
Some religions and beliefs you may know about, some may seem strange and some you've probably never heard of before. Hopefully the information provided on this page will help some people understand the beliefs of others and clear up misunderstandings that may have gone on for generations. You'll discover that people have more in common than you'd think.
I've written descriptions of some world religions to give a basic definition of some of the belief systems. The following links represent a small fraction of the world's religions, so enter with an open mind and explore.
Someone asked Master Yangqi, "When the founder of Zen came from India to China, he sat facing a wall for nine years-what does this mean?" Yangqi said, "As an Indian, he couldn't speak Chinese."
Descriptions of some World Religions
I wrote some of these papers many years ago in an Intro to Religion class, they were written as summaries of a chapter in "The World's Religions" by Huston Smith. Others were collected from other sources. If something is copywrited please let me know! Many thanks to Dr. Tony D'Souza for putting up with me in his class.

Introductory thoughts:
What is religion? There are many definitions for the term "religion" in common usage. On this web site, we define it very broadly, in order to include the greatest number of belief systems: "Religion is any specific system of belief about deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, and a philosophy of life." Thus we include here all of the great monotheistic religions, Eastern religions; Neopagan religions; a wide range of other faith groups, spiritual paths, and ethical systems; and beliefs about the existence of God(s) and Goddess(es). We recognize that most people define " religion " in a much more exclusive manner. Christianity There are many definitions for this term as well . Again, we use an inclusive definition: " An individual or group is Christian if they sincerely, thoughtfully and devoutly believe that they are Christian ." This generates a lot of angry Emails from some visitors to this site who are insistent on excluding some denominations as sub-Christian, quasi-Christian or non-Christian.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
OF THE MAJOR WORLD RELIGIONS
FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
by Ernest Valea
The goal of this site is to investigate whether or not there is sufficient evidence to prove that world religions are complementary and equally true, according to the model inspired by an old Indian tale - that of the blind men who tried to describe an elephant. It is said that once upon a time a king gathered a few men who were born blind. They were asked to describe an elephant, but each one was presented with only a certain part of it. To one was presented the head of the elephant, to another the trunk, to another its ears, to another the leg, the body, the tail, tuft of the tail, etc. The one who was presented with the head said: "The elephant is like a pot!" The one who was presented the trunk answered, "The elephant is like a hose". The one who touched only the ears thought that the elephant was a fan, the others said that it was a pillar, a wall, a rope, a brush, etc. Then they quarreled among themselves, each thinking that he was the only one right and the others were wrong. The obvious truth is that the elephant is a unity of many parts, a unity that they could not grasp in their ignorance. According to the pattern suggested by this tale, it is often said that world religions form a unity, and only this unity provides the right perspective on ultimate truth.

Alphabetized and crosslinked collection of definitions taken from the Oxford Dictionary of world religions and the Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of world religions.
    http://www.bloomington.in.us/~okolicko/definitions.html

    Alphabetized

As a service to you, my visitors, I'm providing definitions of some terms used in these pages, for the sake of clarity. Religious terms will be taken from the Oxford Dictionary of World Religions (Many of the entries in the Oxford dictionary provide a reading list of books devoted to that term). Also, the 1999 edition of Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of World Religions. This note will appear after definitions from the (M-W EWR) . Links are provided to this page whenever a defined term is used in the text. There's a note to this effect on the index page. Wherever you see an asterisk immediately before a term, it means that the term is also included in this list of words. There are many terms here that do not appear in my journals, which are provided for comparative reasons. Sacred texts refered to here are collected on their own page.
This collection of terms and people includes personages throughout history and the world in my lifetime that have influenced or impacted me. I would not be what I have become in my fifty-some years were it not for the beliefs and practices of those varied and sundry people I have met. I hope you find this service informative and useful. The buttons below take you to that letter in the listings.

the site in their own special way, and I'd like to acknowledge theirefforts. Quotations from world religions organized by topic.
    http://www.digiserve.com/mystic/F_start.html
Mysticism is concerned with the nature of reality, the individual's struggle to attain a clear vision of reality, and the transformation of consciousness that accompanies such vision. This site explores the mystical traditions of six religions by comparing and contrasting quotations drawn from their respective literatures. These quotations have been organized by topic as seen below . Because I didn't want to bias the presentation by using terminology unique to a particular religion, I have tried to come up with broad, descriptive names for the topics.
    Preview the site
Since this site consists of hundreds of web pages, I've also developed a single page called The Short List which includes an illustrative quotation for each topic presented here. Looking over this page will give you a feel for the entire site.
    Focus on one religion
If comparative mysticism doesn't appeal to you, feel free to focus on Judaism Christianity Islam/Sufism Hinduism ... Buddhism , or Taoism . By selecting one of these links you will be able to access everything published at this site which pertains to that religion.

    The Harvard Pluralism Project
Interfaith On-Line, featuring "Asheville’s Spiritual Odyssey," began during the 1998-1999 school year in conjunction with an affiliate partner grant from Harvard University’s "Pluralism Project." Dr. Jeanne Matthews Sommer, a Religious Studies faculty member at Warren Wilson College, received the grant in the spring of 1998. The purpose of the grant was to explore the religious diversity which exists in the Asheville/Buncombe county region. Under the direction of Dr. Sommer, nearly forty students have engaged in experiential research projects on a variety of world religions which are represented in Asheville. Student research has been conducted through three different courses: two sections of "World Religions in Asheville: Field Research," and one section of "America’s Alternative Religions." Each student in the two, semester long "World Religions" classes was required to choose a particular religion and conduct extensive experiential research (eight site visits and/or interviews) and text-based research. Each student developed a particular thesis which was of personal interest and for the purpose of writing a twenty page research paper. S/he also gathered basic demographic information from which to create various templates for each religion. Students in the course "America’s Alternative Religions" did less extensive experiential research (one site visit and one interview) in addition to text based research which culminated in a ten page paper.
