Child docs to parents: Stay home and save your kids By Katy Kelly
D octors T. Berry Brazelton and Stanley Greenspan are worried. Despite the nation's prosperity, these well-known child development experts say many children aren't getting what they most need. Their new book, The Irreducible Needs of Children, children were better off 30 years ago." Their prescription includes better schools with smaller classes tailored to the child's learning style and setting clear limits. But the recommendation most likely to get headlines is that parents stay home with their young children. How do we better children's lives? T. Berry Brazelton You oppose day care. Why? Stanley Greenspan: A warm, loving human relationship is very important for intellectual development. Children form their capacity to think and self-image based on these back-and-forth interactions. Fewer of these are happening, because families are so busy and more care is being done outside the home. Studies [show] that for all ages, 85 percent of day care is not high quality. TTB: The kind of child care available to most people is made up of people who change [jobs] four times a year. How could a child relate to four people a year? That's more than we can expect them to be able to respond to. Having too many people to identify with, too many choices, can be a deficit for a child.

How Can I Be Involved in My Child's Education?
by Lynn Liontos
Research studies consistently reveal that high student achievement and self-esteem are closely related to positive parental participation in education. Parents and schools need to work together so all children can succeed in school. Parents often ask the following questions:
What Can I Do to Involve Myself with My Child's School?
Some schools value parent involvement by providing numerous opportunities for parents to interact with each other, with teachers, and with students. Your child's school can provide ideas on how to participate. One important way you can become involved in your child's schooling is to exercise any choices available in the selection of coursework, programs, or even schools. Many schools are moving toward "school-based management," in which administrators share the responsibility for operating schools with teachers, students, parents, and community members. You can become involved in committees that govern your child's school or join the local parent-teacher association. The National Coalition for Parent Involvement in Education (NCPIE) says that schools should regularly communicate with parents about their child's progress and the educational objectives of the school. This communication should also include noncustodial parents, stepparents, and any other adults, such as grandparents, who are responsible for the child. If you aren't receiving such information, ask for it. Work with other parents and guardians to be sure that the school understands how best to keep you informed.

SYPADS South Yorkshire Are you worried because a loved on is taking drugs? If you think we can help, call us on 01709 371 222 or 01302 343 757 What is the South Yorkshire Drugs Helpline? The South Yorkshire Drugs Helpline started in 1998 and provides information and support to anyone whose life is affected by a loved one's drug or alcohol abuse. We offer a confidential service given with respect and understanding of the many difficulties people face when caring for a drug misuser. Who can we help? ANYONE who is concerned about another's drug use. Who will answer my call? Calls are answered by a team of fully trained volunteers, recruited for their ability to listen and offer support to people on the telephone. Volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds. These are some examples of problems people have asked for support to cope with (we have altered some of the details to protect callers' anonymity) Ann rang us because she did not know what to do for the best. Her son had been taking heroin on and off for five years. He was at present living in sheltered accommodation but very much wanted to come home. He had promised to give up heroin if she gave him one more chance. Her husband and son were against the idea. He had stolen from them in the past and they had threatened to leave if he returned. She was torn between supporting her son and the consequences of having him back home. We were able to explore with Anne, her options and how, she could still give her son the support he needed if she did decide not to have him back.
