WHAT WORK-AT-HOME PARENTS CAN SNAG ON THE NET
Four years ago, while pregnant with her second child, software engineer Cheryl Demas did something that surprised even herself: She quit her job to stay at home. But she didn't want to stop working. While rooting around the Internet for job possibilities, says Demas, ''I discovered there were thousands of women who would like to be at home with their kidsand they're intelligent, well-educated women.'' She had an idea: Why not create a Web site that would offer resources and support for work-at-home moms? Today, Demas' site generates half a million page views a month through its business directory, book list, and classified ads. A popular feature is Demas' monthly humor column, which recently described her lifelong quest to be No.1 in line at Disney World. And the site supplies answers to frequently asked questions such as ''How can I convince my boss he should let me work from home after my baby is born?'' Answer: ''Show him how he benefits, too.'' Demas' site is just one of many Web resources for working parents as they alternately glide and stumble through their frenetic lives (table). Think about it: Using the Web, you can nab a freelance job, track down some advice about the nanny tax, and solicit tips on parenting. You can do your banking, unload a stock, or window-shop online. And, if you're feeling lonely in your home office, or guilty about the time you spend on business trips, you can click on to sites that let you chat with like-minded souls.

(FAS) is a term used to describe symptoms in a child which are a result of that child's mother drinking alcohol during her pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effects is a combination of physical and neurological birth defects caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Secondary disabilities of FAS are behavioural, medical, or social consequences of the FAS birth defects.
Secondary disabilities may include problems with school, trouble with the law, social and sexual problems, mental health problems, addictions, and many others. Although the primary disabling conditions of fetal alcohol exposure last a lifetime, its secondary disabilities should be preventable.

Balancing work and home
There are pros and cons to every option. If you are employed, full-time or part-time, you may:
Have a better standard of living and have fewer money problems
Have friends and a social life outside the home
But you may also feel:
Overwhelmed with too much work and are missing out on family life
Feel too tired or busy to enjoy your social life
You may not always feel in control but there are things you can do and think about to help manage the balance between work and home.
Think it through
Prioritise

Take control Talk it through with a friend (or helpline) to help you find out what you think the balance is now. Would you prefer to work more, less or the same as now? Would you like to change how you manage the balance? Talk about what worries you: What makes it difficult? What would make it easier?

Parental involvement in migrant education is at home, not at school
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. The traditional definition of parent involvement many times doesn't work when it comes to migrant education, according to Gerardo Lopez, an assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Education in Bloomington. Lopez focuses in his research on migrant students and their parents, the majority of whom are Latino. He said most educators view parent involvement as coming to school, meeting the teachers and working with them for the benefit of their child. "I challenge this view, because many migrant parents whose students are successful don't even visit the schools; their involvement is in the home. This leaves us to determine if this type of home involvement is equal to the physical presence in the school," he explained. "We are looking at what schools are doing to involve Latino parents," he continued. "They spend a lot of time, money and energy on traditional parent involvement issues instead of building on ways Latino parents are already involved with their children." For example, Lopez said, many migrant parents take their children to work with them in the fields so the children can learn the value and lessons of hard work and the consequences of not continuing their studies. "The students learn that hard work is necessary to provide for the family unit and that education will allow them to provide a better life for their future families," he said.

    UCB Parents Advice about Childcare
Daycare close to home or work?
Advice and recommendations from the UCB Parents mailing list. This page is brought to you by UC Berkeley Parents Network Back to: Childcare Advice I decided to go with a preschool close to home when I had to make a similar quick decision. It has proven to be the best decision for us and we have gotten to know families who live in our immediate neighborhood; families we see frequently at the local park and whose houses we can stop by on Halloween. One family lives on our way to the park, so we frequently have helped each other out with play dates at either house as well as at the park. I originally made the decision because of the convenience if I ever want to work at home and therefore didn't have to drive into Berkeley to drop her off at preschool. When my child was younger (up to 12 months), having him near my work was essential because I was breastfeeding and liked to drop by and see him every day. When he turned 12 months, he began having separation anxiety such that I stopped visiting him because it made him too miserable to say good-bye to me twice each day. Last month I moved. My commute with my now 21-month-old doubled to 40 minutes and became unbearable for both of us. He was bored and whiny, I was distracted and becoming an unsafe driver. Hence, last week I moved him to a daycare near my home. Our commute is now only 15 minutes, and since I no longer visit him during the day, it doesn't matter that he's not near my work. Plus, if I get sick, it will be much easier to drop him off at daycare and return home to recuperate. My advice is to keep your child at the daycare near her home. Transitioning to a new daycare center is extremely anxiety-provoking for both the child and the parents!
