Berkeley High School Recommendations
Teacher Recommendations
Advice and recommendations from the UCB Parents mailing list. This page is brought to you by UC Berkeley Parents Network
Back to: Berkeley High School Recommendations and Berkeley High School's Web Page I have two general comments. 1) Like any recommendations, you have to remember that these are often just one person's experience. In elementary school at Jefferson my son had a not-so-sought-after teacher and had a fabulous year. She wasn't very creative and her room wasn't full of visual appeal but for him she was just the ticketsteady, kind, quiet, etc. 2) I think the kids share a lot of the info among themselves at Berkeley High-who is easy, who's "da bomb", who's crazy, etc. and they are probably the best source for this info. Sally
Tammer is an outstanding (very experienced) English teacher- she literally transforms the meek into the outspoken, motivates writing voices to blossom and really ignites the most apathetic teen creatures into loving the rich study of language arts. Try to get your kid to her and be sure to bring her flowers. My own kid was so lucky to have her! Jan My daughter has Ms Friedman for Spanish 5/6 and LOVES her. She has to work because she is really learning Spanish. Ms. Friedman really talks only Spanish (from day one in the class), but she does it in such a way that the students really do understand her. My recollection is that in the beginning if they were really stuck, she would use English (IF they first asked, in Spanish, for help). My daughter is excited about Spanish this year and hopes to become fluent in it. She wants to go to Mexico to REALLY get it. It seems to me that Ms. Friedman is demanding, but she is also fair in her dealings with students. The class definitely holds my daughter's interest.

COLLECTION AREA Women's Studies GENERAL PURPOSE "Women's Studies uses interdisciplinary methodologies to analyze social and cultural institutions and to reevaluate the assumptions that have shaped human experience." * To adequately support the instructional and research needs of undergraduates and faculty, collecting must focus on those core materials primarily about or for women and materials addressing women's scholarship, feminist theory, and women's culture in all disciplines. The purpose of this collection development policy is, therefore, to define and describe our collecting patterns that support the study of women as a discrete subject as well as an overlapping topic of many other academic disciplines. Women's Studies as a discipline has evolved into a more clearly defined subject area. Collecting responsibilities will continue to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Previous to 1989, women's studies materials were purchased by all bibliographers. The first goal in developing the collection is to acquire materials that are uniquely related to the discipline. In recognition of the development of women's studies as a discrete discipline, Women's Studies was allocated a separate acquisitions budget in 1989. Collection development responsibilities for Women's Studies as a discipline in the Humanities and Social Sciences Collection (Baker Library) are now primarily the responsibility of the

Development of a secure women’s ward from a group of mixed gender secure services
Timothy Lambert
West London Mental Health NHS Trust, United Kingdom
In the past decade, descriptive research into the nature of secure psychiatric services, in the UK and elsewhere, for women patients, has consistently revealed a number of relevant clinical factors some of which distinguish this population from its male counterpart and many of which may be important in planning services. In addition, it is well recognized that the security requirements for women offenders (and those with similar clinical needs) are not yet matched by available services and that gender sensitive therapeutic models are, as yet, poorly developed. This paper reviews the relevant research concerning mentally disordered women offenders and describes the creation of a women only secure ward within a wider group of forensic and secure services in a mental health (National Health Service) Trust. The clinical profile of the patient group, drawn from a series of mixed services, is described with reference to established work concerning detained offender and non-offender women. A service model will be proposed. The model is designed to allow for a broad spectrum of women patients requiring secure care to be effectively and safely treated within a gender sensitive and flexible service, whilst retaining appropriate linkage with mixed, specialist (including forensic) and generic psychiatric services.
