Whales and Dophins
Whales and Dolphins are marine animals. They live in oceans around the world. Whales and Dolphins come from the same family, CETACEA (sey-tay-sha) . They both breath from a blowhole located at the top of their head. Whales and dolpins are mammals. They are mammals because they have lungs not gills, they have hair not scales , and they also have give live birth and don't lay eggs. There are only about 80 kinds of whales and dolphins that we know of right now.
Whales
Whales are very large animals. They can grow up to 100 ft. or more in length. They can weigh up to 200 tons or more. Whales live in families called pods. These pods vary in numbers and consist of family members and family friends. Whales live in these families their whole life. Group living is safer when other whales or sharks attack. It also makes it easier to find food. Whales are always migrating. They travel to find food, breed and have young. Whales do not have eyelids. They rely on thick oily tears to protect their eyes. Whales hear from little holes behind their eyes. Whales talk to each other by making high pitched sounds like whistles, clicks, squeaks, rattles, and groans.

Welcome to the website of the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust! This website aims both to inform you about HWDT and our activities as well as to provide all sorts of information on whales, dolphins and porpoises (a group of animals collectively known as 'cetaceans', pronounced 'set-tay-shuns').
The website is divided into several sections which are shown on the navigation bar above and the menu on the left hand side. Simply click the topic that you're interested in looking at, and you'll be taken there. The navigation bar and menu are on every page, so there's no danger of getting lost - and to return to this page at any time click the HWDT logo.
If you want to find out more about cetaceans then you should go to the pages. Here you will find some general information about whales and dolphins and links to comprehensive Fact Files on species found in Scottish waters as well as many others from around the world. This is also where we provide a full and informative glossary to help you understand some of the more scientific terms we use on the site. NADAIR

Imagine swimming close to a 35 ton, 45 foot long humpback whale and her newborn calf. It's an awesome privilege only a handful of people will ever experience. You'll be helping with the vital research and conservation of one of the world's endangered animals. The humpbacks of Tonga are especially vulnerable and your contribution can make a real difference.
Humpback whales migrate to the beautiful islands of Tonga each year to breed and give birth to their calves in the warm sheltered waters. They migrate around 5,000 miles from their feeding grounds in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, arriving in Tonga in late June/July. We should be able to swim with mothers and calves, as well as mother calf and escort groups when they allow us to get close to them. We should see a variety of surface activity such as breaching, pec-slapping and tail-slapping. Each day we will search for whales from our research boat and are free to be flexible according to weather conditions, whale encounters etc. Be ready for some amazing experiences you'll never forget!

E arly in the 1960's, the people of the United States began a love affair with a large black and white dolphin, commonly called the killer whale or to be more exact, orcinus orca. The killer whale has since been studied continuously, in particular, around the Pacific Northwest where the first live captures began. We are now, almost thirty years later, beginning to realize the scope of the inteligence and culture of this incredible mammal.
T oday there are several killer whales who have become celebrities and their names are known around the world. Keiko , of "Free Willy" fame, the first true ambassador of the cetacean kingdom. Kasatka, the reigning "Shamu" at Sea World San Diego, Springer (A73), the 2 year old orphaned calf that won the heart of Seattle in her quest to find her family. Corky and Lolita , the last of the "pacific captured orcas, are the oldest living killer whales in captivity. We are so lucky to share this planet with them.
T his page was created to better educate the public about killer whales and to share my passion for them. Please take the time to learn about the orca and you decide how you feel about containment vs. life in the wild. I've been studying both sides now for the past three years and I've learned there are no easy answers for either side.

Whale watching in Kaikoura from the air.Category Regional Oceania Travel and Tourism Whale Watching......Whale watching all year round off the Kaikoura Coast of New Zealand with a95% chance of seeing Sperm whales or many others from the air.
http://www.whales.co.nz/
While you are in New Zealand head for Kaikoura and go whale watching, by aeroplane! It's the only way to view whales and mountains, while in New Zealand. In a typical 30 minute flight you will see the majestic Sperm Whale preparing for his next dive and up to 500 Dusky Dolphins cavorting with each other. On occasion sightings include Southern Right, Humpback, Fin, Sei, Brydes, Pilot, Southern Bottlenose and the mighty Blue Whales, and also Common, Hectors, Risso's and Southern Right Whale Dolphins and of course, Orca, although these are all less frequent visitors to the area. You may also fly over Kaikoura Peninsula and see evidence of Maori fortifications (Pa sites), New Zealand Fur Seals resting and the Kaikoura township itself. For some, conditions will allow a spectacular flight over the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges rising to approximately 2800m. After the flight relax in the log terminal over a light meal and drink. An upstairs lounge looks over the sea and local mountains. The gift shop offers momentos of your experience. Wings over Whales provide a comfortable flight, experienced pilots giving an authoritative inflight commentary, at a reasonable cost.
