Coaches' Biographies The Head Strength and Conditioning coach at Woodward Academy is C.J. Stockel, the 1999 USA Weightlifting Developmental Coach of the Year. In September of 1999, at the United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year Banquet, Coach Stockel was chosen as one of five finalist, out of the 45 olympic sports, for the USOC Developmental Coach of the Year. Coach Stockel is beginning his third year at the Academy and has been a head strength coach for over thirteen years. He came to Woodward Academy from South Effingham H. S. where he built one of the best programs in the country. Coach Stockel has coached football, baseball, basketball and track, all at the varsity high school level. It is through these experiences and his knowledge of sports science, that he understands what best fits our athletes needs in training.
Since coming to Woodward Academy, Coach Stockel has been engaged in developing the strength and conditioning program for all of the sports. Each athlete has his/her own personal program for his/her sport. In addition to his strength and conditioning responsibilities, he has had the opportunity to coach the War Eagle Weightlifting Team. In the two years of his tenure, the weightlifting team has had 26 athletes compete at National Championship meets. Thirteen of those athletes finished in the top five of their weight class and have won 15 medals. Four athletes have won National Championships with Shannon Sheesley winning back to back School Age National Championships and making the USA Weightlifting Junior National Squad. In the year of 2003 the Academy will host the American Open Championships under the direction of Coach Stockel.

Clash of the Titans The Road to Athens gets bumpy in San Jose
By Kevin Neuendorf // USOC Media Relations // Dec. 23, 2002
The 2003 Titan Games will take us back to a simpler time; a competition stripped of such glamour sports as swimming, basketball and gymnastics, and focused on combative sports steeped in Olympic history and teeming with intriguing and flamboyant personalities. Add in a circus-like element of four simultaneous competitions plus the lure of the world’s best, and what you have stuffed into the Event Center at San Jose State University is positively Titanesque. Played out over three days, Feb. 13-15, the Titan Games are Cupid’s antithesis as there will be no love lost between combatants battling for over $80,000 in prize money and for the title of Ultimate Titan. The “Road To Athens” for America’s elite boxers, fencers, shot putters, wrestlers, weightlifters and judo, taekwondo and karate athletes matches them up with the world’s powers in each of these respective sports. It’s a sporting mix sure to please any fan. Boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and forms of judo were all part of the original Olympic Games and the excitement and intensity generated by these sports carries with us today. U.S. boxers will re-acquaint themselves with their biggest rivals, the Cubans. Wrestling will showcase college legend Cael Sanderson and local hero Eric Guerrero, a former star at San Jose’s Independence High School and three-time national champion at Oklahoma State.

California DC Treats Olympic Weightlifting Team in Barcelona
Dr. Michael Reed, a Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) postgraduate faculty member and native Californian, accompanied the U.S. weightlifting team to the Olympic Games in Barcelona as official team physician. His appointment came from the U.S. Weightlifting Federation (USWF). The USWF has since nominated Dr. Reed as a member of the Sports Medicine Committee of International Weightlifting. This group appoints only six doctors from around the world and has never had a DC as one of its members. If he is appointed to the committee, Dr. Reed would be the international event physician for weightlifters at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Dr. Reed graduated from LACC in 1982 and later studied sports medicine and recreational injuries through LACC's postgraduate division. He became a board certified chiropractic sports physician in 1991, and is currently a coordinator of LACC's sports diplomate program. Dr. Reed is also secretary of the ACA's Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, and chairs its Committee on Sports Rehabilitation and Sports Research. He has coached weightlifting on the national level and served as team doctor for the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting team at the World Championships for the past four years.

Drug tests cost Bulgarian his silver medal
Posted: Tuesday September 19, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Thursday November 09, 2000 11:44 AM Patrick Herzog/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - In the first positive drug cases of the Games, a Bulgarian weightlifter was stripped of his silver medal and a hammer thrower from Belarus was kicked out of the Olympics. Ivan Ivanov, who won the silver in the 56-kilogram (123-pound) weightlifting, was stripped of his medal after testing positive for furosemide, a diuretic, the IOC said. Ivanov, a gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and former four-time world champion, kissed his barbell after he had clinched the medal Saturday, the first full day of competition. The other banned athlete was Vadim Devyatovsky, a hammer thrower from Belarus, who tested positive for components of the banned steroid nandrolone in an out-of-competition sample on Sept. 12 in the athletes' village, the IOC said.
