Olympic Club light on weight
Sean Mitchell Staff Writer -Wednesday, February 14, 1996 The Olympic Club is fast becoming a venerable club sport within the physical education department here at Chico State University, with club founders placing well at national tournaments as well as bringing good coaching to the program. The Olympic Club is a branch of the club sports program, which is part of the Division of Recreational Sports, located in the physical education building. To become part of a club sport, all that is needed is interest and willingness to participate actively in the sports as well as in the management of the club. After only two years since forming the club and training in Olympic style weightlifting, Olympic Club president Brett Tudsbury recently placed 11th at the American Open in St. Joseph, Mo. Two weeks ago, he finished second at the California State Championships with a combined score of 225 kilograms (496 pounds). Tim Espinosa, co-founder of the club as well as coach and competitor, snatched first place in the heavyweight category at the California State Championships, with combined lifts of 235 kilograms, or 518 pounds. Most club sports are organized with the purpose of allowing members to experience intercollegiate competition beyond the intramural level.

Dubbed the "Pocket Hercules" Suleymanoglu was not a big man, but he had a big heart, and was immensely strong. Standing just 140 centimetres tall and weighing in at around 60 kilograms, Suleymanoglu won the under 60kgs gold medal in 1988 with a combined weight over the snatch and clean and jerk of 342.5kgs. That weight was enough to give him victory by an amazing 30kgs. To prove it was no fluke, the Turk repeated his victories in 1992 and 1996 to become the sport’s first three-time gold medallist. Those sorts of feats have helped make weightlifting one of the Olympic movement’s most popular events.

52. Powerlifting For Athletes With Disabilities
First of all Powerlifting and weightlifting are two different sports.weightlifting is an olympic Sport and features two lifts.
http://members.axion.net/~igregson/benchpress/
Powerlifting and Weightlifting are probably two of the most under-estimated, misunderstood and least respected sports available to people with disabilities. To the lay person, images of humongus Russian lifters at the Olympics are the stereotype. Even in modern powerlifting, lifters are often portrayed as steriod-popping, short fused behemoths - when in fact the reality is considerably different. First of all Powerlifting and Weightlifting are two different sports. Weightlifting is an Olympic Sport and features two lifts. Powerlifting features three lifts - deadlift, bench press and squat and culminates in an annual world championship event. People with disabilities compete in variations on the powerlifting/weightlifting theme, due to the nature of the disability the actual lifts vary. Blind/Partially Sighted:
Full competition - deadlift, squat and bench press Lower Limb Disability:
(polio, amputee, paraplegic, cerebral palsy, les autre.)
Bench Press variation Mentally Handicapped:
Deadlift and Bench Press To complicate matters people with disabilities can compete in many of the single lift meets now popular such as bench press only meets and people with visual impairments compete in non-disabled meets (in fact some Canadian records are held by lifters with visual impairments).

56. OYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING
olympic weightlifting – ITS VALUE IN sports TRAINING By Larry Sheppard BA, BEd,CSCS Junior Development Coordinator Ontario weightlifting Association.
http://home.cogeco.ca/~sleconte2/sheparticle.html
O L YMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING – ITS VALUE IN SPORTS TRAINING By: Larry Sheppard BA, BEd, CSCS - Junior Development Coordinator Ontario Weightlifting Association. Exactly who is documenting all these serious injuries? In my thirty plus years of training and coaching I have seen a few minor muscle pulls and strains from Olympic weightlifting, but never any tendon ruptures, ligament tears, or herniated discs. True, I have seen a few nagging “overuse” syndromes among some high level competitors and Master lifters; but, I have seen more such ailments among serious bodybuilders who have never done fast lifting. And, having coached some three hundred youngsters under the age of 16, I have not witnessed a single injury of the orthopedic nature. Nor, have I seen any of my late teen or adult lifters develop problems because of the training they did as adolescents. On the contrary, kids that do Olympic lifting in their early teens seem to go through the rigors of other sports with less injury problems than those who take up strength training later. As for all the research that points to the superiority of slow velocity resistance movements in building strength , I hardly see how this obvious fact downplays the effectiveness of including some quick power movements in the training of athletes. After all, there is a lot more to athleticism than strength and muscle size alone. So, while high intensity gurus are running off at the mouth about their scientific programs, and academics are citing

57. About Olympic Weightlifting
of the best explainations comes from the Queensland weightlifting Association whosay weightlifting is arguably the most spectacular of all olympic sports.
http://www.coloradoweightlifting.org/about_ol.html
A brief summary of Olympic Weightlifting in the United States:
There are many ways to describe our sport, one of the best explainations comes from the Queensland Weightlifting Association who say: "Weightlifting is arguably the most spectacular of all Olympic sports. Weightlifting epitomises the human desire to seek out challenges, to attempt to do what is seemingly impossible, and to succeed. At the highest level, weightlifting is very much a contest between an athlete and his or her belief in themselves. It is a pure test of flesh and blood against iron and gravity." Olympic Weightlifting involves two seperate lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. These are the lifts contested in the Olympics. The lifting is performed on a platform made of wood and sometimes covered with rubber. The barbell used is 20 kilograms and the plates put on the bar range in weight from .025 - 25 kilograms, with the heaver plates covered in rubber. In competition, each athlete has three attempts at both lifts, with a minimum of two minutes between attempts. Three referees judge the lift giving a white signal for a good lift and a red signal for a no lift. A successful lift must recieve white signals for at least two of the three referees.
