Sports Psychology By Yvonne Brett bretty@usq.edu.au I began working with the TWA late last year as their Psychologist. It was here that I learnt about weightlifting and began to introduce Sport Psychology to club. The next step, for me, has been to begin working with other lifters in Queensland. This was initiated by becoming an executive member of the TWA and the QWA. My next step is to establish a Sport Psychology clinic for all QWA members. Firstly, what is Sport Psychology and what role can Sport Psychology play in weightlifting? There are a number of areas where a Sport Psychologist can help you and these can be explained by four main topics: a) team building, b) lifeskills, c) crisis intervention and d) psychological skills training. Team Building is about working with a group of people who have something in common, and looking at their team structure and how they can better operate together. For example, a team travelling interstate for a period of time may need to consider travel and accommodation arrangements and how they are going to live together for an extended period of time. A crisis situation can occur for no apparent reason and without warning (such as loss of a job) or it could be caused by a build up of a number of small stresses over a period of time. It is during this time that the Psychologist can to help you cope as a form of emotional support.

WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING - ISSUE: 2002/3 EDITORIAL Dear Friends,
Those of you who follow the events and developments of the Olympic Movement with keen interest must have been informed of the momentous IOC discussions that took place in Lausanne at the end of August, whereby the IOC Executive Board deliberated the sports programme of the future Olympic Games.
As it is known, medals were awarded in Sydney in 300 events of 28 summer Olympic sports. That is an enormous number of medals alone - and just think: more than twenty sports are in the waiting line hoping to be included in the Olympic Games programme one day.
International officials know that it is impossible to increase the number of sports and events. At the same time, it seems unavoidable to curb the number of athletes and officials to be accredited to the Games.
In that situation the International Olympic Committee had to make a move. They appointed the Programme Commission with the mission of submitting a report to the Executive Board after an analysis of the current programme and proposing a sort of "ideal" Olympic programme. It is important to understand that the Commission's mandate was of a purely technical nature, without taking into consideration any historical, national, sport political aspects, Federation interests or merits. The proposal they put on the IOC's table was therefore made on a technical, organisational, television broadcasting and economic considerations.

WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING - ISSUE: 2002/4 EDITORIAL Dear Friends,
We are writing an Editorial in a publication called World Weightlifting, we are speaking the common language of weightlifting and, most of the times, we live in its confined world and terrain. Yet nowadays, when the World is getting smaller and smaller every day, thanks to the breathtaking evolution of the means of communication and the Internet; and in every field of daily life we witness a trend of globalisation, in a summary and assessment of the year 2002, we cannot just short-sightedly limit ourselves to the events and developments in our own sport. We must look beyond, and always place ourselves in a global context, regard ourselves as a participant and partner in an intertwining web of Olympic and non-Olympic sports and their various worldwide organisations.
Thus, our look back on 2002 will not only include a focus on weightlifting but a more universal context of sports as well.
As you will see on the following pages of this magazine in the special Report on Warsaw: the 2002 World Championships for Men and Women were an excellent series of events. Relying on rich experience, great traditions and a big heart, the Polish Weightlifting Federation offered the World of Weightlifting an outstanding organisation. We must thank our Polish friends for this enormous service to the sport!

    Hossein Rezazadeh claims gold
By Paul Cohen, Sydney The giants were in town on Tuesday and the earth shook. When the super-heavies do battle in the weightlifting arena it is bound to. Seventy stone of iron being slammed down after a successful lift sends out shuddering tremors through an auditorium. Not that there has been has been any shortage of reverberation emanating from the art of weightlifting over the past 10 days. The shock waves from drug scandal after drug scandal has left the sport's 104 year presence on the Olympic menu in serious jeopardy. In the last and most revered event of the weightlifting programme, Hossein Rezazadeh of Iran took gold in the 105+kg to justly have claim to the title of world's strongest man. Rezazadeh hoisted a world record two-lift combination of 472.5kg - about 74 stone in old money - but the sport as a whole has a heavy burden on its shoulders which has less chance of being lifted. Expulsions Wholesale expulsions of the Romanian and Bulgarian teams followed by appeals, threats of legal action and backtracking by the sport's administrators have dragged down the name of weightlifting.
