    Designing Web Usability
New Riders Publishing May 4, 2001 This manuscript is Chapter 4 Site Design from the New Riders Publishing book Designing Web Usability Look at the Web as you've never seen it before, through the eyes of the average user. Users experience the usability of a site before they have committed to using it and before they have spent any money on potential purchases. The Web is the ultimate environment for empowerment. He or she who clicks the mouse decides everything. In this landmark design reference, the world's acknowledged authority on Web usability, Jakob Nielsen, shares with you the full weight of his wisdom and experience. From content and page design to designing for ease of navigation and users with disabilities, Jakob Nielsen delivers complete direction on how to connect with any Web user, in any situation. Topics include:
    • Site Design: home pages, navigation, search capabilities

Web publishing provides a creative outlet in my work life that allows me to indulge the artistic gene I inherited from both sides of the family. It also brings out my tendencies toward perfectionism - I'm a fanatic about doing it right. What I'm learning about right now: PHP . If you aren't using it, you should be. A few of my current favorite web haunts on publishing and design:

Why wait for the summary? I'll give you a sneak preview right now-This book is so good it's a MUST HAVE for any serious Web Site designer!
Mr. Nielson leaves no stone unturned when it comes to designing the usability of a Web Site and he is totally impartial in his choices of examples. He is an expert in the field, until 1998 he was a Sun Microsystems distinguished engineer and the company's web usability guru, and it certainly shows in this extensive work. His examples are large enough to actually see (in color too) and they are plentiful. You will see what a Site looks like (or did at the time) and how it could be better, or how it was actually changed and made better. Designing Web Usability is the "What" of good Web Sites and Mr. Nielson's next book will be the "How" I can't wait. Here is Nielson's description of how to design usability: "Relish simplicity, and focus on the users' goals rather than glitzy design."
