Back to Releases with Audio Index Release Title: Leonids meteor shower could be brightest over North America The 2000 Leonids meteor shower could be spectacular.
The annual Leonids meteor shower is expected to peak over the Eastern United States Nov. 17 and 18. It occurs when Earth passes close to the orbit of the comet Tempel-Tuttle and its debris. Three peak times for the showers are forecast for Nov. 17 at about 3 a.m. EST and again at 11 p.m. EST, and Nov. 18 at about 3 a.m. EST.
There are four sound bites about the Marshall Space Flight Center's role in observing the Leonids shower. The voice is Mitzi Adams, an astronomer at the Marshall Center.

Past Geomagnetic Storms

The Sun's activity
causes large changes in the Sun's plasma and energetic particle populations, and these changes are responsible for the "space weather" that affects Earth. Space weather can impact the upper atmosphere and may influence long-term climate trends. The affects are related to CMEs SEPs , and coronal holes , the source of high-speed streams. The largest storms occur when a fast CME hits Earth shortly after its shock arrives. In January 1997, for the first time, a coronal mass ejection was observed in real-time all the way from the Sun to its dramatic consequences at Earth four days later. Nation’s Newest Advanced Weather Satellite Launched
DENVER, Colo., September 21, 2000 - The NOAA-L spacecraft, a Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) satellite, was launched successfully this morning at 3:22 a.m. PDT from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Sunnyvale, Calif., built NOAA-L, and a Lockheed Martin-built Titan II space launch vehicle, provided under contract to the U.S. Air Force by Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver, Colo., carried the satellite into orbit. “We are very proud to be a part of this important program for NASA, NOAA and the U.S. Air Force,” said G. Thomas Marsh, president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Space Systems-Astronautics Operations, the company that builds the Titan II launch system. “Today’s early morning liftoff marked the tenth consecutive successful Titan II launch and, more importantly, another successful mission for our customers.” NOAA-L is the latest model in four generations of POES satellites. All have been designed and built for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by Lockheed Martin heritage companies since the first TIROS weather satellite launch in April 1960. Most of the spacecraft in the series have operated far longer than originally expected, earning them a reputation as the workhorse of the civil space Earth-imaging inventory. Operating as a pair, two POES satellites orbit the planet in nearly north-south paths. As the Earth rotates, the entire globe, one swath at a time, rolls into view of the satellites’ instruments. The instruments continually sense the entire depth of the atmosphere and report on the following weather generating factors:

PAUL Using satellite imaging and local volunteers, a group of scientists at the University of Minnesota are studying the health of Minnesota's 10,469 lakes. Across the state, 58 percent of lakes are clear to depths of 6 feet or more, according to data published last month. In a separate satellite survey of metro-area lakes published in October, scientists found that 34 metro lakes got clearer over the past 25 years as farmland gave way to suburban lawns. To get those results, researcher Leif Olmanson examines digital satellite pictures of Minnesota and measures light reflected off thousands of lakes. Meanwhile, people like Alec Donaldson, a retired marketing executive, hop into boats on various lakes and lower white disks into the depths. By analyzing Landsat satellite images, scientists determine the water clarity of Minnesota's lakes and volunteers such as Donaldson provide readings to back up the satellite results.

One of the launcher research objectives is the development of a tool to simulate the unsteady operation of liquid propellant rocket engines. In the mid-1990s, Congress wanted to cut the Galileo mission to Jupiter, after it was already up there This mission is an excellent demonstration of political idiocy in action. If we wait 10 more years, the mission will be almost worthless, and Pluto will go into a deep freeze, rendering it useless to study. Not only that, it will be more expensive if we postpone it. Both houses of Congress are sticking to their guns with their budget increases, and New Horizons will launch in 2006. will happen. Now, for the first time in my life, I have been hearing people everywhere I go talk about how little money NASA gets and how much we expect from them. Internet Growth With the rapid growth of the Internet, the ROC government adopted several measures to establish a safe and reliable environment for Internet application in August 2000. These include the formulation of a law governing electronic contracts; the extension of intellectual property rights protection to such Internet applications as linking, metatags, and framing; and the registration and management of domain names. In addition, the government plans to establish a taxation system for e-commerce, and lay down regulations for monetary transfers and securities transactions via the Internet. Web-related offenses will be defined and penalties established. Meanwhile, the government is replacing traditional written documentation with electronic files and is working toward resource-sharing among the various agencies through an intranet that will provide the public with a "single window" service. As of December 2001, Taiwan had 7.82 million active Internet subscribers and a penetration rate of 35 percent. Competition has intensified in the broadband services market, with the entry of private fixed networking companies. As of December 2001, ADSL and cable modem subscribers totaled 920,000 and 210,000, which reflected respective growth rate of 700 percent and 89 percent from 2000.

Space Weather
Space Weather is a modern phrase for the conditions in space that are deterimined by the intensity of hard radiation, the magnitude of electric and magnetic fields, the level of electric currents, and other disturbances. Space "storms" often result from flare or coronal mass ejection events at the Sun which greatly intensify the solar wind. With a delay of a few days such disturbances may impact the near Earth environment.
Space weather conditions are extremely important for the behaviour of satellites and space probes. Radiation damage from high energy particles may destroy the solar panels, cause upsets in the onboard computer systems, and may sometimes cause destructive sparking in space instruments. The atmosphere can get heated and expand to cause satellite braking and subsequent re-entering.
Space weather conditions may also affect systems at ground. During geomagnetic storms with brilliant auroras in the polar regions, currents of millions of amps may flow in the upper atmosphere at heights around 100 km. These currents induce secondary electric fields and currents at ground level, for instance, in high-voltage power lines, where they may cause failure in line protection relays and damage to transformers resulting in power outages over large regions. Extended telephone lines and other signal lines may also be disturbed and damaged. Even steel pipe-lines carrying oil and gas from fields in the arctic regions to consumers south of the auroral zone are damaged by the corrosive effects of such Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC).

Since January, 1, 2000 the SIDC issues space weather forecasts in the context of the ISES network. The International Space Environment Service (ISES, http://www.sec.noaa.gov/ises/ises.html) is a joint service of URSI, IAU and IUGG and a permanent service of the Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Data Services (FAGS, http://www.kms.dk/fags). Via the ISES network of Regional Warning centers (RWCs), data and forecasts of the space weather are mutually exchanged. From 1965 onwards, the Observatory of Meudon (Paris) acted as the RWC for Western Europe. In January 2000, when the Observatory of Meudon was unable to continue this service, the RWC activities were transferred to the SIDC. During Space Weather week (May 2000) in Boulder (US), the ISES assembled and granted the SIDC the official status of RWC for Western Europe. Together with the transition of the RWC activities from Meudon to Brussels, the SIDC also inherited the procedures and software developed at Meudon for the daily space weather forecasts. Currently a major effort is spent on debugging/upgrading this software, merging it with the previous Sunspot index procedures and extending it with our EIT/LASCO know-how and software. A forecast room has been installed at the offices of the SIDC consisting of an array of screens displaying continuously, in near real-time the latest incoming satellite and ground based data.

NASA and NSF has awarded a grant to the Space Science Institute to create and implement the Space Weather Outreach Program (SWOP). SWOP, which is part of the National Space Weather Program , is a comprehensive program of educational products and services that will deepen the public's understanding of space weather and its impact on people and technology.
Goals
The goal of NSWP is to develop an interagency system that provides reliable observations and forecasts of activity in the space environment between the Sun and Earth. This activity encompasses phenomena like the eruptive prominence shown at right, and the auroras in Earth's upper atmosphere. SWOP will develop new outreach products and services related to space physics research, and it will also help to coordinate existing activities (e.g. projects at Rice University and the University of Michigan ). SWOP efforts will be aligned with NSWP's Strategic Plan [1995], as well as other national education studies (e.g., the National Academy of Science 's National Science Education Standards
