Water Quality, Pollution, and the Environment
Emerging Asia The impact of this can be seen from the following comparison: the combined volume of water used and water needed to dilute and flush pollutants is almost equal to the volume of accessible freshwater in the world's river systems. The development of freshwater resources for human uses has compromised natural ecosystems that depend on these resources for their continued integrity. Freshwater ecosystems, comprising lakes, rivers, and wetlands, have already lost a greater proportion of species and habitat than land or ocean ecosystems. Unrestricted development of surface water and groundwater has altered the hydrologic cycle and threatens the natural functions of deltas and wetlands. Wetlands have been converted to cropland, and rivers that channeled water to estuaries and deltas have dried up. The Yellow River in the PRC, for example, is now dry during substantial portions of the year, while adjacent wetlands that tempered floods have been lost. The Aral Sea basin illustrates vividly the extent to which human intervention has affected the natural functioning of aquatic systems. Excessive diversion of water for irrigation so reduced the flow of rivers entering the sea that its surface has shrunk by 45 percent and its volume by 70 percent since 1970. A formerly flourishing fishing industry has collapsed, and major health problems are now associated with windblown toxic salts and contaminated residues. Diminished productive potential, loss of vegetation, increased health risks, and irreversible desecration of aquatic biota are the sad legacy.

How We Measure Quality
Find out about the different aspects of water quality Environment Waikato measures, and our guidelines used to assess them. On this page: Water quality is measured by either taking measurements on site or taking samples of water back to the laboratory for analysis. How water quality is assessed depends on its use. Water suitable for some uses may be unacceptable for others. For example, water contaminated with treated sewage may be unsafe for swimming but still suitable for industrial cooling. Table 1 lists the different aspects of water quality we measure every month. It summarises why these are important and the guidelines used to assess them. The water quality measures in Table 1 are divided into two groups:
  • those measuring whether water quality is suitable for plants and animals living in a river ( ecological health ) and
  • those that measure whether water quality is suitable for human uses such as swimming.

Chapter 2. State of the Caucasus Environment and Policy Measures: a retrospective from 1972 to 2002 2.4 Fresh Waters 2.4.3 Surface and Ground Water Quality Diffused sources of pollution, other than agriculture runoff, drainage waters from legal landfills and illegal dumpsites and open-pit mining operations, etc. as well as urban run-off also posed high threat to surface and ground waters. In Armenia, for example, the Debed River, a tributary of the Kura River was highly polluted with copper and zinc discharged from the Alaverdi mine in Northeast Armenia. In Georgia, waste-waters from copper mining operations heavily polluted the Kazretula River (Kura River basin) with heavy metals. In the North Caucasus, the contamination of Terek-Kuma artesian aquifer with arsenic was and still is a problem (Ministry of Environment and Nature Resources Protection, Russian Federation 1996). Historically, the coverage rate of the Caucasus region by sewage systems was high, amounting to about 50-60% of the urban population. The majority of the rural populations however, were not covered by sewage services and they at large relied on septic tanks. Water treatment facilities usually received more waste-water than they could treat. In many cases, industrial waste-waters were discharged directly into municipal sewage collectors. In addition, frequently rain water sewers and domestic sewage systems were connected to each other, causing overloading during heavy rainfalls.
