In order to accurately discuss surface water quality, it is important to understand two key terms, watershed and basin. A watershed is a land area that drains into a lake or river and its tributaries. A basin is a large watershed or group of watersheds such as the Great Lakes and Ohio River basins. For the purposes of the 2002 Annual State of the Environment Report, basins within the state include groups of individual watersheds. Back to Top Surface Water Quality Focusing on watersheds allows environmental protection to move beyond political boundaries to more effectively understand and manage difficult issues. Such issues include sources of pollution, habitat destruction and drinking water protection. Indiana has parts of 38 U.S. Geological Survey cataloging units or eight-digit watersheds, many of which extend into neighboring states. These watersheds contain approximately 36,000 stream miles and drain into the state's nine major drainage basins. Also, more than 600 publicly owned inland lakes and reservoirs cover more than 106,000 acres within the basins. Surface water quality varies from severely degraded by pollution to clean enough for fishing, swimming or for use as a drinking water supply. Advanced Search Search: Urban Services Environment and Heritage Water Environment ACT: ACT Water Quality Report '98-'99 Environment ACT: ACT Water Quality Report '98-'99 Executive Summary Environment ACT undertakes a water monitoring program for the ACT which includes water quality and streamflow monitoring. This information is used to determine whether waters in the ACT are of adequate quality and if the management strategies used to achieve or maintain such water quality are adequate. This report provides the ACT community with the results of the program and the level of compliance with the ACT Water Quality Standards. Water quality is monitored in the major urban lakes (with the exception of Lake Burley Griffin, a Commonwealth responsibility) and Burrinjuck Reservoir which is immediately downstream of the ACT. The major rivers and some urban streams are also monitored. River flow is measured at a number of sites throughout the ACT. Rainfall for the period was above the long term average. As a result, streamflow was also higher than for last year and has had observable effects on water quality in some areas with elevated levels of suspended solids and turbidity. The drought caused a reduction in surface vegetation leaving soils prone to higher erosion. The increased rainfall and corresponding runoff has facilitated this erosion.
