Home School Modernization Background If you are a PTA member and would like additional information about this issue, click here The need for modernization and new construction of school facilities is critical in school districts throughout the United States. Schools face the enormous challenges of record-high enrollments, new demands for education technology, the need for school-based before- and after-school programs, and the hazards of deteriorating facilities. Nearly 53 million students are currently enrolled in elementary and secondary schools, and this number is expected to rise to 54.4 million by 2008. The American Society of Civil Engineers releases an annual Report Card of America's Infrastructure , which looks at the condition, performance, capacity, and funding of our nation's infrastructure and scores each category with a letter grade. Included in the examination are roads, bridges, dams, solid waste, mass transit, aviation, hazardous waste, and schools. In 1998, the first year

A Guide to Lincoln and Washington Elementary Media Centers
Welcome to the Lincoln and Washington Elementary Media Center Home Page! Our students have access to thousands of media resources. We hope that our materials will enlighten, inform, entertain, and encourage lifelong reading habits! Our staff is ready to assist parents, teachers, and students! We want media to be a positive, exciting experience! Audio Cassette Kits Internet Books Media Center Hours ... CD-ROM's - Kindergarten students may check out 2 books after the third week of school. Students in 1st grade through 3rd grade may check out two titles at a time. One of these books may go home, and the other book must remain at school. Students in 4th grade and 5th grade may check out 2 books; however, more books may be checked out if needed for research. Books and materials are arranged in several areas within our media center: Audio Cassette Kits (These kits are only found at the Lincoln Media Center.) We have many book/tape kits that Lincoln students may check out. Read along tapes are a great way for our emergent readers to learn to read. Everybody Section Our Everybody Section is filled with picture books for children and adults to enjoy. Our students learn about the role of an author and an illustrator. Students in kindergarten determine what artistic medium was used in the picture books that we explore. We learn about acrylic and watercolor paints, charcoal, collage, ink, pencil, chalk, photographs, and crayon mediums. Students of all ages enjoy these beautiful books.

52. OELMA Legislation And Advocacy
media specialists advocate in their own school districts and Ohio Educational Librarymedia Association 17 South High ALA washington Office http//www.ala.org
http://www.oelma.org/Legislation.htm
What is Advocacy?
Advocacy is building support for something ( an organization, an ideal, a cause) gradually, over time. It is a long-term, step-by-step process. It is the broad umbrella term under which public relations, marketing, lobbying, and advertising campaign, all fit. An advocate is a person who can be counted on in all venues and circumstances to support a particular cause. At every opportunity, such a person will gather their courage, and speak-out or act for the good of the cause in which they believe. Why do Media Specialists need to advocate?
The role of a school library media specialist is not well understood by many education decision makers. There is a mistaken belief by many people that the Internet is the answer to everything. Funds are being channeled into classroom technology and away from the media center. Media Center staff positions are being cut. The very existence of school library media specialists may be at stake. The publication of national standards in Information Power, ALA, 1998, and state standards in Quality Library Media Programs for Ohio Schools, OELMA, 1999, gave media specialists an opportunity to reposition themselves. The Advocacy Project initiated by AASL, and in which OELMA is participating, gives the building level media specialist the support and materials needed to be an effective advocate for their media center program.
