Centers for Public Health Preparedness
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated a national system of Centers for Public Health Preparedness (CPHP) to ensure frontline public health workers have the skills and competencies required to effectively respond to current and emerging health threats. The Centers (CPHPs) are involved in four key areas: development of competency-based public health practice curricula; technology-mediated learning (e-learning); certification and credentialing; and, applied research and evaluation. The nation system currently includes academic, specialty and local exemplar centers. Academic Centers

Academic Centers Academic Centers are cornerstones of the system and link schools of public health, state and local health agencies and other academic and community health partners to foster individual preparedness at the front line. University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health Illinois Public Health Preparedness Center will develop an introductory Public Health 101 course, to be made available statewide via distance learning; provide online instruction for public health administrator certification and initiate certificate programs for community health improvement specialists and other areas of practice previously identified as priorities in state needs assessment surveys.

It is not for general librarians or educators. We want to keep the activity and discussion focused on school library media. But, LM_NET can be used by library media people for many different things- to ask for input, share ideas and information, link programs that are geographically remote, make contacts, etc. We currently have over 14,400 subscribers from at least 64 countries.
Conversation on LM_NET
should focus on the topics of interest to the school library media community, including the latest on school library media services, operations, and activities. It is a group for practitioners helping practitioners, sharing ideas, solving problems, telling each other about new publications and up-coming conferences, asking for assistance or information, and linking schools through their library media centers. Eileen Maxwell IMLS Responds to Challenge to Help Children Learn Washington, D.C.-Museums and libraries across the country are welcoming America's students back to school. With increasing frequency, schools and school districts are tapping museums and libraries to help teach and enrich the K-12 curriculum. Some students whose schools link their curricula with nearby museums and libraries are even reporting scoring higher on standardized tests. Launching his annual America Goes Back to School effort, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley is calling for greater community involvement in education: " America Goes Back to School is a special time for communities to reaffirm their commitment to learning and education." By providing crucial Federal support (grants and technical assistance) to the nation's museums and libraries to carry out their educational mission, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) reaffirms its commitment to learning. Museums and libraries are natural partners in education. IMLS recently funded a nationwide survey, "True Needs, True Partners," which found that 88 percent of museums provide K-12 educational programming. Seventy percent have at least one full-time paid staff member who administers K-12 educational programs. Museums report substantial use of school curriculum standards in shaping educational programs for a variety of school subjects. IMLS grants for musuem-school partnerships have involved 82,000 students, 228 schools, and 82 museums.

Today's Urgent Actions
Write to Elected Officials Donate Today Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® Campaign Issues at a Glance Contraceptive Access at School-Based Health Centers: Three Case Studies Background Adolescent birth rates in the United States are the highest among industrialized nations. At least 80 percent of teenage pregnancies are unintended, and three-fourths of these pregnancies occur to adolescent women who do not use contraception. Moreover, unprotected sexual intercourse places adolescents at risk of infection with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV. In the United States, about one-fourth of all new STD infections occur among youth ages 15 to 19, and one-fourth of all new HIV infections occur in those under the age of 21. Young people in the United States may fail to protect themselves during sexual intercourse if they lack 1) accurate information regarding sexuality and contraception and/or 2) access to health care. Teens' access to care may be limited by cost, time constraints, lack of transportation, inflexible clinic operating hours, fear that confidentiality will be breached, and apprehension about discussing personal health problems.

This site is based on research conducted by Sally Moses.
This project focused on research of the resources available on the Internet. The end product was an Internet resource guide for use in a K12 media center by students, teachers, and media specialists. By targeting a varied audience, the researcher was able to discover the resources that were availablefor all the people that a media specialist may serve. In addition, the researcher focused on reference and bibliographic sources for students because those resources would benefit the greatest number of students. For media specialists and teachers, she (Sally Moses) chose resources that would support their professions.

School Library Media Quarterly 25 no. 2 (Winter, 1997): 95-101. Abstract : The article examines ways of evaluating media collections, including size; checking the collection against recognized standard bibliographies,; and calculating average collection age. There are difficulties with all of these methods. Size measures only quantity but says nothing about the content or condition of the items. Using a standard bibliography to evaluation collection depends on finding a suitable bibliography. It is difficult to demonstrate that the titles listed in a standard source do constitute a good collection of materials for the needs and characteristics of a particular library media center in a specific town and school. Also, many standard lists do not include items that are no longer available even thought these may be perfectly suitable for a collection. Another way of examining a collection is to estimate the age of information in the collection.

Outdated School Libraries: What Can You Do to Update Yours?
In Baltimore, library coordinator Della Curtis keeps examples of outdated books from the county's school libraries on a "shelf of shame." Curtis spearheaded a drive in Baltimore that led county officials this year to fund $10.5 million for the purchase of new books. Today, Curtis tells Education World writer Mary Daniels Brown how she accomplished that. Included: Comments from librarians and other experts on the state of our schools' libraries and advice from Della Curtis on mounting your own successful campaign for funding for new library books. In May 2000 the Baltimore (Maryland) County Council approved a $10.5 million budget for the purchase of new books for libraries in all of the county's middle and high schools. "Replacing the collections will bring us up to 80 percent of state standards," Della Curtis, coordinator of the county schools' office of library information services, told Education World. Baltimore County is the 24th largest school district in the country. The Baltimore County secondary schools need this money for new library materials. According to
