Thomas Edison's forebears lived in New Jersey until their loyalty to the British crown during the American Revolution drove them to Nova Scotia, Canada. From there, later generations relocated to Ontario and fought the Americans in the War of 1812. Edison's mother, Nancy Elliott, was originally from New York until her family moved to Vienna, Canada, where she met Sam Edison, Jr., whom she later married. When Sam became involved in an unsuccessful insurrection in Ontario in the 1830s, he was forced to flee to the United States and in 1839 they made their home in Milan, Ohio.

The history of Marion County The city of Marion is well known as the home of President Warren G. Harding, the twenty-ninth president of the United States, who was for years editor of the "Marion Star." The Harding Home, located at 380 Mount Vernon Avenue, was built in 1891 and occupied by the Harding's until they left for Washington, D.C. in March, 1921. From the front porch of this home, Harding then a U.S. Senator, conducted his famous "front porch campaign" in 1920. The beautiful Harding Memorial on Delaware Avenue is a circular monument of white Georgia marble, which contains the stone vaults of President and Mrs. Harding. Also, many Americans sympathized with Greece's own struggles for independence in the 1820's. Greek Revival architecture began with public buildings in Philadelphia. By 1841, local engineer John A. Roebling had designed the first wire rope bridge, and by 1847 the first cable suspension bridge. During the Civil War, Pittsburgh's iron factories supplied the Union army with warships, armor plate and other materials. After the war, as many as 62 glass factories flourished, most of them on what is now the South Side. In 1873, Andrew Carnegie opened his first steel mill, the Edgar Thomson Works, on the site of historic Braddock's field. Pittsburgh would stoke its manufacturing economy during the next 100 years, generating a number of inventions and inventors, including George Westinghouse, credited with such advancements as the air brake and alternating current. In 1888, ALCOA began producing a new metal called aluminum.
